What makes this song so great is that it can mean so many things to so many different people. It basically touches on many common themes such as alienation and loneliness. Anybody who feels they live a double life can immediately relate to this song which leads many people to think of drug abusers, rock stars, or closet homosexuals, but it could also just be about an astronaut, a traveling salesman, or somebody who has to change who they are to do their job.
It doesn't really matter what it is exactly about, everybody can relate to it. |

I agree with Random Boy about the creationist aspects of the song - "nobody there, no one can judge you" = statements referring to god or the lack thereof. There has been some speculation that humans evolved from some type of sea creature - nostrils on the underside of the nose, blubber, etc. (check out the aquatic ape theory). But anyway, I think it is about evolution, and yeah it does sound cool. |

I realize that trying to interpret lyrics is pretty pointless and sometimes songs mean nothing, but I always thought this song represented a relationship that existed around the partner needing alcohol to be intimate and obviously the end of said relationship. Although this is a literal interpretation many people can probably relate to similar circumstances. |
