Queensrÿche – Silent Lucidity Lyrics 13 years ago
I always sort of thought that it was about lucid dreaming. It's about dreaming about losing someone very close to you, a wife, mother, father or sibling etc. You dream they have gone to heaven (your mind tricked you to feel the pain of someone close to you leaving the game of life). In that dream that loved one is telling you that by crossing over there is no fear and everything is what you want it to be. It's a basic description of crossing over to heaven. They are saying that they will be with you, protecting you and helping you through it all.

But you wake up lying in bed finding out that it was just a bad dream, and after realizing it you have another chance to make the most of your time here on earth and with that loved one.

I'm not a 100% sure that this is what the song is about. But it's been one of my favorite songs ever, and that's sort of the way I've always taken it.

Gordon Lightfoot – The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald Lyrics 13 years ago
AS I'm sure many have pointed out, this song is about the 729 foot freighter Edmund Fitzgerald that sank in Lake Superior. There is a museum at Whitefish Point dedicated to the ship. I actually visited the museum and it's a must see for anyone interested in shipwrecks of the great lakes, especially this one. As the song says they were actually only about 16 miles from Whitefish point when she sank.

There's a few common theories on how she sank. One is that she just took on too much water from a hatch that had been clamped improperly and it leaked in the cargohold throughout that last day, creating a major list, and once the storm became worse it couldn't handle the waves. Another is that she ran into 3 rogue waves that overloaded the deck with water. The last theory is that since the Fitzgerald was 729 feet long and the lake was only 530 feet deep where she sank, she may have dipped into the "hole" of a giant wave and one end of the ship actually hit the bottom of the lake, with the stress causing her to break in two. There are other less popular theories, but I tend to believe the last one the most.

I think Gordon Lightfoot captured what it was like that night perfectly in his song. The weeping guitar gives it an eery feeling.

Genesis – Follow You Follow Me Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the song is basically from the man's point of view of the relationship, asking his girl if she will be with him through it all, the thick and thin, good times and bad. His life is so much better, he feels safe, secure and is no longer afraid of anything as long as she stays with him.

I've heard that the band all agreed that their music was attracting mainly male audiences, almost 95% in fact. This song was written specifically to redress the balance. This is also one of the first songs where all 3 members had equal parts in writing the song. Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks usually were the more prolific writers.

Personally, I like the Phil Collins era better than the Gabriel era, and this is probably my favorite song of Collins' era.

Chicago – Along Comes A Woman Lyrics 13 years ago
This song was off their 17th album "Chicago 17", released in 1984 and the last with Peter Cetera as a member of the band.

This song is basically about the enchanted feeling you get when the perfect woman enters your life for the first time and you feel everything about it is perfect.

Chicago – Alive Again Lyrics 13 years ago
This was the first single recorded after the accidental death of Terry Kath in 1978. It's off their 12th album Hot Streets. It's rock song with a bit of disco flavor in it, signaling the beginning of a new era for the band. As "abinlp" said previously, there were many people who thought that Chicago should have quit after Terry's death, and that the soul had died with Terry. I do agree that Terry Kath was irreplaceable for the band. But I think they did right by continuing on, what they did was they changed their style to a more Adult Contemporary sound rather than try and replace Terry Kath's soulful voice and elite guitar skill.

Chicago – What Kind of Man Would I Be? Lyrics 13 years ago
This song was Chicago's last top 10 hit. It's a catchy song off of their 19th album "Chicago 19".

Basically it's a love song from a guy's point of view telling his love for his girl. He believes he would be a bad person and not really a man if he didn't live his life with meaning, which is her. He couldn't live without her but he believe she could move on without him.

Chicago – We Can Last Forever Lyrics 13 years ago
Off of Chicago 19 (1989), this song isn't really all that deep or hard figure out. It's simply a love song from a guy to his lady citing his feeling that they can last forever together. It was written by lead singer Jason Scheff.

Despite the belief that longtime Chicago fans like myself don't really care for the sappier love ballads like this one, it did relatively well on the charts getting 55 on the top 100.

Stone Temple Pilots – Plush Lyrics 13 years ago
I know a lot of people do, but I don't believe that this song is full of metaphors.

Scott Weiland himself has said that this song was written after he read an article on a girl who had been kidnapped and found dead in an area outside of San Diego. I believe that, because even before I actually became interested in the meaning I always had a feeling that the line "When the dogs begin to smell her" had to be about a dead body.

Quicksilver Messenger Service – fresh air Lyrics 13 years ago
I really like this song. This song has such a haunting, echoing, hypnotic feeling to it....much do to Dino Valente's vocals. I think it perfectly represents the feeling and sound of the late 60's. Fresh air, California sunshine, summer in San Francisco and lots of drugs.

Admittedly, I'm only 25 and wasn't even thought of in 1968, but when I listen to this I can almost put myself in that era.

Enuff Z'nuff – Fly High Michelle Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm listening to this song right now. It's definitely about a girl's suicide written from the perspective of her ex-boyfriend who is drunk, reminiscing and grieving that he'll never see her again and that she shouldn't have given up her struggle with life.

He's wishing they could have done more together, and that it may have swayed her from suicide, midway through the song the lyrics change to "You had to give it up" meaning he's realized there's nothing that could have swayed from her suicide

Pearl Jam – Jeremy Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about a boy named Jeremy Wade Delle, 16, who shot himself in front of his 30 classmates in his 2nd period English class. To know a bit about the background and history of Jeremy. He attended Richardson Highschool in Texas and his English teacher was Faye Barnett. Jeremy had only been at Richardson for a little more than 3 months before his death, he had some problems at his previous school and was sent to a psychiatric hospital. Apparently the insurance money ran out at the hospital and he was deemed as "cured" and released. Subsequently he went to live with his dad and was trasferred to Richardson HS. Shortly after arriving at Richardson Jeremy's locker was searched and some controversial but not illegal religeous items were found. Also, Jeremy had made some statements regarding two Richardson faculty members that may have gone over the line. As a result, they placed him in ISS (In School Suspension. You have to believe that being moved around like this and immediately being labeled a trouble maker would have a profound effect on a 16 year old. They pretty much put him in ISS because of the locker search and because of his stay at the psychiatric hospital, were I understand he was happier and got along with the other patients. In the ISS program he had been in contact with a girl, Lisa Moore, and they had become friends. Lisa stated that Jeremy wanted to discuss the boy she was dating and also mentioned he was having trouble with one of his techers. She was probably the closest person to Jeremy at the time. Anyway, he was assigned to the ISS program and from what I've read the ISS was pretty bad. It was pretty much solitary confinement, they didn't talk to you and you couldn't talk. Considering Jeremy was described as a quiet, lonely and distant boy, isolation was the last thing he should've been given. Lisa and Jeremy would secretly write notes back and forth at ISS and he would alway write "Write Back" on the bottom of each note. On Monday January 7th, he wrote "Later Days".

On the Tuesday morning of January 8th, 1991 Jeremy was supposed to be in ISS the day he attended Faye Barnett's class and Faye knew he was supposed to be there. She told Jeremy that he needed a pricipal's pass to even be in her room. By this time Jeremy's life was in turmoil and he was unhappy, his parents divorced at an early age and his Dad barely knew he was even there. His school life was no better. Plus I believe there may have been underlying psychiatric problems.

Jeremy got out of his seat and was gone for less than 10 minutes, Instead of going to the pricipals' office he went to his locker and retrieved a .357 magnum and hid it under his shirt. When he returned to Barnett's class he quietly entered the classromm and walked to the front. With no emotion he said, "Miss, I got what I really went for". He placed the barrel in his mouth and pulled the trigger before anyone could react.

It's a really sad and tragic story, and I think it just really hit Eddie Vedder prompting him to write the song.
