Open represents an epic swath of grunge era dystopia, insecure and guilt laden passages over a bed of harmonic dissonance.
Someone talking someone into doing something they don’t want to do. Again.
Once the song is mid-stream, tragedy is alive and inescapable. Fully committed, taken on knees, this song foreshadows the inevitable pain and creative pressure that permeates the album. It is the literal opening track.
Just like End is the end, Open is the start of the journey: chaotic and inviting, like a late night temptation into another time. |

At face value, this song explicitly describes a heroin high. However, as years have progressed and I’ve realized that “great” musicians write songs with multiple layers of meaning, I have pondered alternate theories.
Euphoria is fleeting and (consequently) addictive. Power is similar. Addiction to both of these things is uncontrollable, irrational, and a story as old as Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. |

This song always makes me think of something I remember from the early 80’s, when I was 5 or 6.
There was rumors or maybe “reportings” (..the fogginess of youth) of an old conversion van with a tear-drop window on its side that was creeping around the neighborhood, kidnapping little kids. The kids (allegedly) disappeared forever...
Though, there’s a turn this song takes. 2/3 of the way through, it spews stream-of-consciousness Ohgr speak - slipping down the psych slide into a ball pit of hallucinogenic spittle. But with such a hooky melody!
Alas, perhaps I am a voluntary hitchhiker on the lost highway of the white van. |

No other song on the album contains this homage, this transitional recap of events that led to the protagonist's current state of being.
It brings the listener up to speed on past pains, before exploring a completely new environment: organic, exploratory, self-aware, and fragile. |

It could just be fiction, but I think this song is about an infatuational affair. One that the singer cannot avoid, despite an overly-analytic conscious.
A one-sided perspective of wanton expectations from the other side marries with the author's lack of resistance.
Like the persistent incoming tide, the waves' force erode the shoreline. Inevitable and tragic, passionate and emotionally-flooding. |

100 Years sets the tone for the whole album. Dark, disaffected, damaged, dysfunctional. The verses are random stanzas, but interconnected through their chaotic and illusory focus on raw human emotions: anguish, jealousy, inebriation, and unrelenting truth.
Musically, it is driving and brash, a discordant freight train pulsing down the tracks to hell. The overdriven screeching and monotonous high-ends laced with amphetamine-like bass drum pulses. The musical phrases progress and gain context through Mr. Smith's guttural turmoil prose, poetically purged from the chasms of his deep, rich voice. |

This was one of the first songs recorded on the other side of The Cure's peak. Still at their precipice musically, the overdriven sound and angst-fueled melody is both rash and honest. They had descended into a straight-jacket wearing, incurable and moody mega group, hooked on everything and detesting even more. This song resonates with this tone. |
