Leonard Cohen – Teachers Lyrics | 15 years ago |
maybe there's too much analysis for your own good, psychic. analysis is good, but i think this is one of cohen's simplest songs. "teachers = women" gets you about 95% of the song's meaning. i like your analysis of the men and hospital parts. here's where i come in. i don't think the teachers at the end are saying that he had the answers the whole time. i think they're laughing cruelly because they're playing a cruel game with him. they're the authority figures, he's a helpless child, and they're delighting in messing with him. i assume you're a woman from your name (does that make me sexist?), and i feel like there are some things in cohen's songs, specifically the bitter parts, that are clearer to a man. |

yeah, i guess if i were to interpret it any further... i feel like "the better man" might be the FRIEND that she loves AS A FRIEND, but the fact that "he left" indicates that he can't be that guy anymore. he loves her too much for that. just a hunch, based on experiences i've had. this is one of my favorite cohen songs. "your beauty lost to you yourself," i've known (and loved) some girls like that. |

this one seems pretty obviously to be about losing one's identity to a woman. |
Leonard Cohen – Diamonds in the Mine Lyrics | 15 years ago |
the first poster says the chorus is clear enough, so maybe s/he gets it, but this song isn't simply about life being empty. as far as i can tell, this song is specifically about a woman after her prime. nobody's sending her letters, nobody's buying her wine, nobody's giving her chocolates, and nobody's "mining for diamonds" in her vagina. it's basically the bitterest song ever, and i love it. |
