have to agree with Leafsneverdie. getting upset with americans for not embracing The Hip, is a waste of energy. If Americans are "smart" enough to appreciate a band like Death Cab for Cutie, they can handle Gord's lyrics too. Personally I believe America is just too big to appreciate a band like the Hip. A smaller community like canada can more easily embrace a complex band like them,especially when you get a chance to see them live on a regular basis. oh yeah, and this is a great song, I get shivers every time i hear it. I don't know that i would kill a man who raped my ister, but i would f*&k him up pretty bad. The line "lets go michael, son ,i'm taking you home" resonates. the cop knows the man, knows the family, probably knows the man doesnt deserve to be there, but he has to take him back anyway. |

| I can't believe nobody has commented on any kelly willis songs yet! I think this is my favorite of hers. Her vocals on it are amazing. The song is about being lost in the big world, and hearing a voice, maybe an accent, that reminds you of Home. | |

Thanks for that info, enviro. Thats what i love about this site, learning more about songs i love. I think this is one of those beautifully abstract songs that can mean so many htings to people, depending on their circumstances. I take it as living life the best you can, getting the most out of it as you can, experiencing as much as you can, because time moves on regardless, and our time on this earth islimited, even if what we can experience is not. |

I love songs that are so direct and simple, yet can still be so open to different interpretations in different life circumstances. A lover leaving or a mother dying, the song can help anyone going through the pain. Absloutely beautifully written and performed. |

One of my favorite songs, from one of my favorite albums. The raw quality of the guitars and vocals serves the raw lyrics perfectly. I don't see this as an abusive relationship, just a very one-sided one. His comparitive indifference to her is probably as crushing to her as other types of abuse, though. |

This is the first song i have used this site for. reading through the interpretations, what struck me was how the same song couldmean different things for different people. for instance, those for whom abuse had played a major role in theirlives,sawthe "well intentioned man" as an abuser. I think this is ahallmark of great lyrics: a shared experience with others that we can all personalize as our own. |
