you nicely and clearly expressed what I was thinking too about the song. I do think that you pretty much got the whole meaning right.

Porcupine Tree – So Called Friend Lyrics 14 years ago
this is a song about a girl who comes in between two very close friends. the girl used to be one of the guy's girlfriend but now, possibly for revenge, she's having a relationship with the other one, who betrays his long-time friend to be with the girl. let's go through some lines...

"Lip read, a mountain stream, fibers in a car
Shut down a cheerless town, a head rolls in the park"

Ok the first one is actually a line I'm having some trouble understanding... it sounds pretty evocative... in my opinion it should somehow describe the general situation and make some references to the other songs in the deadwing album (think about the car of arriving somewhere)... the second line to me is pretty clear... it seems to imply that the guy, tired by the boring and meaningless life of a "cheerless" town (maybe because he is thinking about the failed relationship with the girl herself, remember lyrics from "lazarus"), goes out for a walk in the park.

"Once seen my libertine undresses in the dark
She puts her love inside to break us both apart"

pretty easy, the guy strolling around in the park sees the girl (my libertine, Steven Wilson is being pretty sarcastic here, love it) and his friend in the dark as she undresses and makes love to him. I love how poetic SW always manages to sound, whatever he is saying. It is wonderful that he is never banal. "She puts her love inside to break us both apart"...that's pure poetry, guys :D And I always like to consider that SW always chooses words with the intent of portraying or summon a particular scene. Notice that the use of "once seen" seems to imply she WANTS TO BE SEEN by his boyfriend as she betrays him with the friend. That's why I think the girl is carrying out some kind of vengeance. And (love this) consider that the expression "she puts her love inside" somehow seems to refer to sex...or at least it is some kind of strong expression that strongly evokes it.

"With you I felt brand new, you opened up the sky
What need to punish me with surgery and lies?"

I don't get whether in this line he's talking about the girlfriend or his friend. Anyway, no need for explanations, the guy simply thought that the girl/friend was some kind of savior who had really meant something for him, who had dragged him out of a difficult situation (you opened up the sky). Now he realizes he's been fooled and lied to.

"Sleep well my so called friend, a virus in your heart
She bends my so called friend and rips my life apart"

the first of these two lines happens to be pretty sarcastic ("sleep well my so-called friend"), with the guy wishing for his friend to have a good sleep even if the friend himself knows he is a traitor with a corrupted heart ("a virus in your heart"). the second line repeats the concept that the girl is bending and twisting the so-called friend to do as she wills. up till now the girl seems to be the most evil one. :D

"In sound escape is found from carving out the day
My gift a weight that lifts, my eyes give me away"

This is the one stanza which was pretty troublesome... tons of hypothesis about it, I'm gonna write the one which happens to be the most fitting one imo... maybe this stanza is about the life of the guy after he's discovered the betrayal, you can see it that way. It might be that the guys escapes the suffering he's experiencing through music ("in sound... etc etc"), and at least now he is pleased he knows about the betrayal for sure, a betrayal he might have been suspecting for a long time. His only gift in the whole story is "a weight that lifts". At least now he knows it, he's not fooled anymore. Still he's pretty shocked and by the thing and cannot manage to see the positive part of it, or get over it ("my eyes give me away").

"You tell me all the things you know I want to hear
You stain the sub terrain with sarin gas and fear"

Still referred to the friend imo... maybe the friend has asked for forgiveness but not is a sincere way, he's just doing it to please the guy and not to apologize truly (first line)... imo the second line is just a kind of poetical and stevenwilson-ish (XD) way of saying that the friend is a true bastard... so bastard that he simbolically poisons the ground he walks on.

"What kind of friend are you?
What kind of friend are you?
You're so cold
What kind of friend are you?
What kind of friend are you?
So Called Friend"

this is self explanatory...

"I miss the holy bliss of sun across the bed
How sad that all my plans seem foolish now instead"

this line seems to imply that now the betrayed guy missed his life with the girl as it was and the plans for the future he made with her... In particular I think "the bed" mentioned happens to be the bed in which they slept together as a couple... the first line really reminds me when you happen to sleep with a girl and then the next morning you are woken by the sun shining on the bed an your face trough the gaps in between the curtains...those moments are like true peace and happiness to be alive... that's what the guy's missing now he has lost girl and friend... or at least something I would be missing in that situation.

That's it guys, my interpretation... comment if you want... hope you'll find it good enough...

Porcupine Tree – Chloroform Lyrics 14 years ago
I think dickprick kinda has it...I don't think that the song is about the killer himself whose action are widely described in In Absentia... the killer has just narcotized the victim or maybe is even killing the victim by forcing him/her in someplace with an high concentration of chloroform in the air (this way of killing people has been already used since it provides a slow and gradual death). So the whole song is about the last thoughts that rush trough the mind of the victim, in an hallucinated stream of consciousness... beautiful, anyway, as anything by Steven Wilson.

Porcupine Tree – Drawing the Line Lyrics 14 years ago
I love the song, even the chorus. I think it is brilliant because the verses are so intimate and sentimental and the chorus comes in with a blow of power and energy that really shakes you up. And I love the fact that Steven's able to put desperate lyrics together with powerful and vivid music.

I think there might be some veiled reference to "the count of monte cristo" by A. Dumas... naturally, that's just my opinion...

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 15 years ago
this is probably the best song ever composed...I think it is pretty wrong to try and give some logical sense to this song or to care about the shit regarding backwards messages. this is one of those works of art that you don't need to understand. this song just needs to be felt, that's all. buy the "how the west was won" live cd, lie down on the bed, put this song loud on the cd player and close your eyes. you will feel as if the depths of your heart and soul were one with the world around you...and you will experience the sweet melancholy of not knowing what our purpose in life is, were do we go, where do we drift. you will feel as if suddenly all of the universe made some cryptic sense that no one can grub even if it pervades you... that's it... it's all about feelings guys... this song always sounds to me as a celebration of existence through music. it's, in short, when music becomes Truth in a metaphysical sense.
thanks to jimmy page and led zeppelin for making this gift to mankind.

White Lies – To Lose My Life Lyrics 15 years ago
well I think the meaning is pretty straightforward... Nutty explained it pretty well imo... I just want to point out something that appears not to have been noticed by anyone else... despite the fact that the two possibilities the song gives (to lose one's life or to lose one's love), the title of the song, and of the whole album, is TO LOSE MY LIFE... isn't it, in your opinions, some kind of hint left there to propose a solution to the dramatic choice? doesn't it make you think that, in the end, if you really love someone, you'd want him/her to live on even after you've gone?? to me, it does. that's just what I think. sayonara

I've thought about it a lot... in my opinion kami_no_namida has it. I couldn't find an explanation of the lyrics that could fit the song better.

Andrea Bocelli – Caruso Lyrics 15 years ago
here is a very good English translation I myself made some time ago for a different purpose than posting it here. I am Italian and part of my family is English, so I know both languages enough well to provide absolutely reliable translations.

Here where the sea shines,
and wind blows vigorously
on an old terrace
before the Gulf Of Sorrento
a man hugs a girl,
after he had cried
then he fines his voice ,
and the chant restarts.

"I love you very much,
I love you very very much, you know
now it is a chain,
that melts the blood inside the veins, you know."

He saw the lights in the middle of the sea,
and thought of the nights back there in America
but it was just the lights of the fishing boats
and the white trail of a helix
he felt the pain in the music,
stood up and left the piano
but when he saw the moon coming out of a cloud
even death seemed sweeter to him
he looked into the eyes of the girl,
those eyes as green as the sea,
then all of a sudden a tear was shed,
and he believed he was drowning.

"I love you very much,
I love you very very much, you know
now it is a chain,
that melts the blood inside the veins, you know."

Power of lyric,
where every drama is false
so that with a little bit of make up and mime
you can become another person
but two eyes that stare at you
so near and real (the actual meaning is something in between "real" and "truthful")
make you forget the words,
and derange the thoughts
this way everything becomes tiny,
even those nights back there in America
you turn back and you can see you life
as the trail of a helix
well, it's just life ending,
and he didn't even think a lot about it
instead he already felt glad,
and started again his chant

"I love you very much,
I love you very very much, you know
now it is a chain,
that melts the blood inside the veins, you know."

Paolo Conte – Max Lyrics 15 years ago
max was just max
calmer than ever
his lucidity

Stop it, Max
your easiness
does not simplify anything, Max

Max
doesn't explain himself
Let me get off, Max
I can see a secret
coming nearer to here, Max

Pain of Salvation – Disco Queen Lyrics 15 years ago
apart from the meaning, which I think was pretty much well understood by funkgott, let's talk about the music. this song is fucking amazing. it's some kind of paradigmatic progressive song. progressive metal composers should not be ashamed of mixing genres up. this is a perfect example of how prog metal artists are supposed do accept everything inside their songs, even disco bits. somehow this song reminds me of some other songs which have been very important in the contemporaneous progressive scenery. I really must say that scarsick probably puts pos together with some other giants of prog like dream theater, porcupine tree or symphony X.

Pink Floyd – Echoes Lyrics 15 years ago
you all guys didn't consider something really important. that's why everyone of you has some problems in getting the meaning of the lyrics. what you forgot is something about the title. remember that this song title was supposed to be THE RETURN OF THE SON OF NOTHING. Then they changed it. Probably because the first one was way to allusive. ECHOES is more indirect and suggest some different impression, as if the whole song was some kind of stream of consciousness by someone who is seeking some sort of sense in life. Isn't that "you" he calls for in the last verse interpretable as the thing which would fill the emptiness of his world? You can see everything you want in it. Could be love, could be an important person, could be the sense of life itself. It would be too long for me to go through the whole song to explain every line, but I'm sure that if you read the whole thing again thinkin of it as "the return of the son of nothing" it'll make more sense. Keep in mind that the original title is a metaphor which stands for "the return of someone to something he never had in the first place". In the end it is just a huge reference to life as we live it, always in search of something we can't grab, since it doesn't exist in the first place. We feel longing for thing that are fated not to be ours. That's the meaning.

Porcupine Tree – Baby Dream in Cellophane Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with XCrusherX's interpretation. Except for some details in the very last stanza.

"I've been - in limousines
I've seen - inside your dreams
It's raining there
Try not to stare"

I think that this is from a later point of view too. I think this song is essentially about the innocence of infancy. When you're born you are pure and uncorrupted, in perfect harmony with the whole world. You're are provided with everything you need, and basically life seems easy. All looks like there'll be no pain, no suffering. In the last stanza he's grown up, he's realized that life is hard and filled with sorrow. And now the "rain in cellophane" isn't anymore something he feels comfortable with, even being in a limousine [so he's probably even a successful man]. He's mind has been touched by emotions and life and so now the rain somehow has gained that sad meaning we all know. Now rain just brings sad memories back. He's not trying to make his childhood world stay, he's just calmly withdrawing from the dramatic though of life as it is in reality. He's just trying to forget, while he knows too well that life's hardly ever simple and perfectly happy.

Regarding the missing line in the studio version I perfectly agree with Wakeboard_Snufkin... I thought of that too and now, seeing that someone else noticed it , I'm quite convinced that's pretty much why that line is in the lyrics but isn't sung... Steven's a fuckin' genius...

That's what I think...XD
