Iron & Wine – Promising Light Lyrics 15 years ago
The "promising light on the sidewalk girls" reference - I see the sidewalk girls as prostitutes. Not just random girls but actual women of the streets where he goes to quench his desire for the girl he lost but the only girl he wants is the one thats gone. When he sees these sidewalk girls under the streetlights at night he thinks that maybe all his pain and suffering can go away in those moments with another woman but in truth it just brings him more pain.

thats just my take on it.

Iron & Wine – Faded from the Winter Lyrics 15 years ago
This song speaks different to every person who hears it and thats why I love it. It is my favourite song by sam beam by far. I think the simple lyrics are so strong and powerful.

When I hear this song I think of a small stone cottage, maybe on the english countryside or something, and a woman sleeping in bed in the early afternoon and the man who loves her is watching her sleep peacefully. Maybe she has gone through alot, or they have together, but his love for her is so strong and he just watches her as the rain pounds on the window, the fire crackles in the other room and the dog sleeps on the rug. He stokes her hair and they are completely content. Though they are both "faded" from the trials of the winter, they will come out of it, and its a song of renewal and hope.

thats just what I picture but i enjoyed reading what other people pictured as well.

Iron & Wine – He Lays in the Reins Lyrics 15 years ago
oh and the old grey stallion could also be his wife, whoes old and such and isn't fit for racing or hard work, but she gave it a good go. he thinks of this while he lays in another womans arms and takes another drink/kiss for the end of their day and the deteriration of their marriage.

I think this song has somewhat of a sexual conutation to it as well. I don't have my head in the gutter but lay in the reigns could parallel to laying in his arms, all the speed and strength he gave...

I'm guessing this song is about a married couple whoes love and passion is withering out, its about a man cheating in a way through emotions and a kiss with a tall stable girl who is probably younger but also more passionate, and it feels like grace from the earth coming out of a boring marriage but still it doesn't feel right. And now his want from that day makes him curse his sleep at night while he lays next to his wife, he's now tangled in his own string of lies and guilt. But he is much too tired to fight for his marriage anymore. So he gives in.

This is just what I thought about it. The spanish part could be about him imagining himself starting over in a new marriage, maybe with this new girl he met and picturing what life would be like with her.

Iron & Wine – Carousel Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a beautiful song, I definitly think there are religious references as well as references to a war, though which one remains uncertain. The latter of you are probably correct in saying it is in the middle east.
I think a very important reference is Noah's ark, because it symbolizes the belief that the world has gone bad and one man, an ordinary one, takes it upon himself to be the next Noah to save him from a flood. Calling him a crackhead is very important to the rest of the theme of this song because everyone seems to have lost their religion so they wouldn't believe him that the next great flood was upon them.
