Ian MacKaye has said that "Repeater" was an obscure reference to The Beatles\' album, Revolver – as both are guns and both words refer to the spinning of vinyl records – so... the last line of this tune – "I\'m Only Sleeping" – is no accident. So fucking cool!

@[mlmorgan:39934] It\'s only shocking until you realize the irony in the of the futility of "hunting (as in, looking for) niggers in the dark." Get it? It\'s not the most socially acceptable term, but it\'s nothing more that a Southern twist of phrase. Say what you will about it, but the fact is that he didn\'t mean anything racist with it. Shock value? Maybe. Southern Gothic literature? Definitely.

Eric Clapton – Bell Bottom Blues Lyrics 10 years ago
Shut the fuck up, Donny! You're out of your element. This one is definitely about Patti. Clapton bought her a pair of bell-bottoms once and titled the song for her when he wrote it. This has been well-documented, even by Patti herself. It's clear you've never been in love, man. These lyrics are obviously moaning for a woman out of reach.

Sex Pistols – Holidays In The Sun Lyrics 10 years ago
Here's what I think. Rotten, born in the UK, has seen what class-struggle is. His message is that we can either go over the Berlin Wall (out-left the Soviets, chastise our democratic system) or go UNDER the Berlin Wall, and that's a bit more literal.

Ramones – Bonzo Goes To Bitburg Lyrics 10 years ago
Yes, if you like playing both sides of a heated conflict, shoveling arms to terrorist groups in South America, tripling the national debt, wasting billions of dollars in the (horribly executed) war on drugs, and having a cabinet chalk-full of criminals. All in all, what I'm trying to say is: Fuck you and Johnny Ramone.

Bob Dylan – Ballad of a Thin Man Lyrics 11 years ago
Don't Look Back was released in 1967, but it documents Dylan's 1965 tour of the U.K. Which lasted from April 30 to May 10. "Ballad of a Thin Man" was recorded in August of that year and released a few weeks later. The famous Time magazine interview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=c1cFAU1T1T0&feature=fvwp) was in Don't Look Back, so it's obviously about that interview. Other explanations are stupid in light of this information. Of course, you can interpret it as you like, which I believe was Dylan's intent -- Like he said in the interview, he's just painting an honest picture.

The two parts that have always left me confused though were the bits about the Sword-Swallower and the One-Eyed Midget. It seems pretty clear to me, within the context, that Dylan is referring to himself through these characters. What is with the kneeling and the crossing of himself and the clicking of his high-heels in the former verse? If you watch the interview, I think it all has to do with the stream-of-consciousness aspect of his convictions. In the case of the One-Eyed Midget, it might just be Dylan's poetic way of referring to himself as a dick, or at least through the eyes of the beholder.

The Velvet Underground – I'm Set Free Lyrics 11 years ago
I don't think it has anything to do with drugs. It sounds more like a new nation being liberated from their dictators, looking for answers in a new government or something. But I don't think that's it either. This song was recorded in late '68, not long after the assassination of Martin Luther King. It could be something like "Blackbird," a track the Beatles released while VU were recording this album. Shit, I wouldn't be surprised if Lou was influenced by it directly. That would be a trip. Crazy, but it might be true.

I wouldn't even say that much. Rather, it's a logical opposition to violent means of spreading it. Take the Kantian interpretation of "means to an end." Live and let live. At least that's how I see it.

Radiohead – 2 + 2 = 5 (The Lukewarm) Lyrics 12 years ago
At the 2:25 point in the song, it switches up dynamics and chord progression. The whole tune is basically divided into three parts: the electronic intro, the "paying attention" break-out, and the "'cause I'm not" part, which begins at 2:25 a.k.a. 2+2=5

Radiohead – Separator Lyrics 12 years ago
Great response, but I do think the double-meaning is on purpose. The song title almost gives it away. And, it has been theorized that OK Computer and In Rainbows were sister albums... that's pretty savvy, although I feel it's a big in-joke rather than trick marketing. They've got the fanbase, why not mess with them?

Elton John – Rocket Man Lyrics 12 years ago
Listen, guys, if it's just "about an astronaut," the song wouldn't have gotten so much recognition, it wouldn't have touched so many people. Same goes for those other songs. Of course, they're about space on the outside, but if you listen closer to lyrics like "buring out my fuse up here alone," "I'm not the man they think I am at home," you begin to realize there's more to the story. Just as "Space Oddity" is about disconnection and possibly drifting off into insanity, or "Sattelite of Love" is about an extreme case of jealousy.

The White Stripes – Fell In Love With A Girl Lyrics 12 years ago
I know that Jack is a genius, and he's got no problem stepping into a woman's shoes to sing "Jolene," but this song is totally heterosexual. You're overcomplicating things. I'm good friends with a guy in this situation right now. Basically, falling in love with this semi-promiscuous girl. "Bobby says it's fine, he don't consider it cheating," that's what she's telling Jack's character in the song. Whether or not Bobby really said it's fine is a different story. Remember, we're talking about the guy who wrote "We Are Going to Be Friends" here.

John Frusciante – Your Pussy's Glued To A Building On Fire Lyrics 12 years ago
After such a long time of examining this song, I think it's finally dawned on me. Ever since I've heard it, the first and last lines both seemed entirely out of place, and they are to a certain extent... but I think that was at least kind of on purpose. Shock value might have been a small reason it was kept, but -- you know, being human, we may relate to this -- you think of an interesting way of saying something but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, or is deemed inappropriate by society or what-have-you. Well, I think this song is about John's denial of that. He's going to say "Your Pussy's Glued to a Building on Fire" -- which is probably based on Peeper's theory, more specifically similar to "girl, you're in love with a madman..." but then it goes on to say that it's okay. And, by the end of the song, when he says "you little duck house," it doesn't make any sense, but you-the-listener are now in his own mindset because he's seduced you into his beautiful way of thinking, as we roam along the hillside with him.

Not sure at all, but I think it's a cool interpretation. Also, I think it is reminiscent of Tiny Dancer.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Sister Lyrics 13 years ago
Jeff Mangum seems to have an obsession with any variation of the word "milk," lol... nothing bad, like Jack White's obsession with the number 3... anyway, I feel like that plays a crucial role in "deciphering" any of Mangum's songs, if that's even possible, lol. Regardless the man is a legend, and his words change us for the better.

I'm so glad you answered that guy's question. It makes perfect sense, being that later in this song Jeff sings the line about "getting married with some angry twister," etc.

Yeah, man. Cover up, macpherso, your racism is showing. I'm not saying Bush was definitely behind 9/11, or that he even was at all, but you said that Bush isn't "evil" enough to kill 3,000 people in NYC, but we all know that he's evil enough to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in Iraq. And, as far as him being smart enough to plan this attack, damnit, everybody knows that we might as well have called those eight years the Cheney-Rumsfeld administration. Bush was totally incompetant, if not braindead.

Led Zeppelin – That's the Way Lyrics 14 years ago
It's definitely a "summer song" like you said, and that's whenever Led Zeppelin (and all music) really tends to speak to me, the natural comfort provided by those tiny flowers, it's just so tender and loving. In particular, it reminds me of Summer '08 when I had great close friends, many of whom I don't see much anymore, but all we did was get chill out, get high, drive around, and listen to Led Zeppelin all day long. Undoubtedly the best time of my life, haha.

Led Zeppelin – That's the Way Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this whole song is about realizing that life does have intrinsic value, and the lyrics are written through the eyes of one who just doesn't get it, talking to "the boy next door," modelled after Plant or anyone who feels that way, probably the listener in general, which is why he changed it to "girl next door" on the live DVD version. In the end, it's kind of a bitter irony, "is that the way it oughtta stay? yes, mama said that's the way it oughtta be." Kind of second-guessing what he was told and then re-assuring himself about what his parents said to him about the world, and working all day for a few bucks and neglecting life as it is. Some people just won't ever change... it's like Plant had found a power to convey pitiful emotions towards the character he was playing, which makes it twice as emotional, being in the first person like that. Easilly one of Robert's top five songwriting efforts of all time.

I love the DVD version of this song, too. The vocal harmonization in the middle of the song pokes a little hole in my heart for a moment, during which time I am unable to breathe, but I just keep getting sweet bursts of beautiful oxygen for those few moments. I cried the first time I heard that, and I'm not an emotional person, but that was just so overpowering, man.

Led Zeppelin – That's the Way Lyrics 14 years ago
Yeah, I can totally relate to this song, man. Plant's lyrics are very introspective. It always brings to mind this one kid I used to know, he's in the Navy now, got accepted into the Accademy or whatever, was the salutitorian at my high school graduation, while I barely passed and had it planned to just recieve my diploma, walk out and flip off the guy who gave it to me, lol.. that never happened because I was misinformed that they would give us an empty plaque so nothing that revolutionary would happen :( lol, anyway, it's just so great how Plant completely relates to life as it is on songs like this and "Going to California," both great songs. How people grow apart, and some end up kissing tiny flowers, while others go on living straight, going "somewhere." I let my hair hang down, I walk all day long, around town.. and I just picture all these people from my childhood past saying, "mama said, mama said," I love the way this song is written. It's like he was writing a song about himself. It reminds me a lot of "People are Strange" by The Doors, being written in the same spirit, or so it seems. Long live Zeppelin.
