The Smashing Pumpkins – Cherub Rock Lyrics | 11 years ago |
So, this song is about the eviel music industry. I never got that vibe even though the lyrics ARE delivered with a hint of sarcasm, leading to the conclusion they are words said in spite. Actually, this song always gave me extreme bliss, and it's hard for me to imagine it being very critical or reprimanding. To me it always felt like an attempt to transcend, or reach for something. Yes, clearly the songwriter is upset with some scene he is a part of, hence the repeated line "Let me out" sung in a voice tinged with ambition. There is a theme of rebellion in this song. "I know, I know, I know, should have listened when I was told," also with "Hipsters unite. Come align for the big fight to rock for you." I think he is on the side of the hipsters. You have to remember that at the time this was written, "hipster" didn't have such a negative connotation. Maybe the hipster THEN was actually someone who was on the fringe of artistic expression. "Deep down we are frightened, and we're scared if you don't stare." A sincere sounding lyric, if you ask me. I think it means that we all crave attention, even if it isn't much. And the chorus has always been especially puzzling. I think the songwriter really doesn't care about money, as long as there's enough to get by, and that "honey" is just good feelings. Hell, I'd use that word to describe this whole album, matter of fact. It's a classic song from a classic album and one of my long-time favorites. |
Cassino – American Low Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I've listened to the song a whole lot this past year, and the lyrics are so abstract it's hard to get a feel for what they mean. Here's what this song means to me, anyhow: Poverty is a definite theme going on here, as previous commenters have mentioned. However, I think it's by choice, as in not living beyond your means. The writer sees greed in other people, "this never-ending swirl of American sin", and he doesn't know how to compete with it as an artist. "The poshest scarf on the warmest days, it's enough to make you give up she says", a reference to the flashy "hipster" lifestyle, I believe. Then the chorus gives a wonderful feeling of indifference. As the world keeps moving and consuming, the pair is struggling and forgotten. The second verse section builds on the idea that when you have nothing, you have nothing to lose. The world could go up in flames, but it wouldn't stop these two from dancing. I love this song because, in slight, it glorifies poverty. Then, it expresses a feeling of being run down by the breakneck pace of American society. It's a beautiful commentary on Western culture. |

Third Eye Blind – Darkness Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"I want you to love me Like you did before you knew me And I never thought there'd be any help for somebody like me A vacancy" My take on it: She no longer loves him like she did when she first saw him. She was chasing the thought that they could be perfect together. But eventually she realized it wasn't meant to be. And at the end of it all, he's shocked that she even let him, and all his problems, in. |
