U2 – Every Breaking Wave Lyrics 9 years ago
When I hear this song, I think of U2 and their song-writing process. Breaking waves are song ideas, they are always coming and going.

The song-writing process involves losing more than winning, as you could record thousands of hours and just settle on a handful of good songs. In other words, you are there to lose most of the time, not to win. You are there to stop chasing every breaking wave (song) and wait until something really sweeps you off your feet.

And every gambler knows that to lose
Is what you're really there for

Baby, every dog on the street
Knows that we’re in love with defeat
Are we ready to be swept off our feet
And stop chasing every breaking wave

Excellent song. I noticed that Dave really likes the "Noose" reference. Is this the third song with the word "noose" in it? (Best of You, and Generator being the other ones).

What is the significance of "paper mountains?"

Foo Fighters – Back & Forth Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is excellent.

People are blasting this song as the weakest song on the album. But, it's a standard Foo Fighters song. On almost every album they have an upbeat, really happy, catchy song, the style of which doesn't really fit with the rest of the album.

Examples include:
-Big Me
-See You
-Breakout
-Resolve

Can you offer a better interpretation? I explained exactly why I think it may be about Rosemary Carroll. Can you refute it or do better?

Foo Fighters – Dear Rosemary Lyrics 13 years ago
If what I said above is correct, if this song is about Rosemary Carroll... it almost comes across as accusatory.

"You've got away, got away, got away with things.
You got away, got away, got away with things."

The second line is a play on the first. It goes from "You HAVE a way with things" to "you GOT away with things."

"Truth ain't gonna change the way you lie.
Youth ain't gonna change the way you die."

The discussions on the websites that I found revealed that Rosemary Carroll believed that Kurt Cobain was murdered. The first line here mentions truth---did she know the truth, perhaps as a result of her attorney-client privilege with Courtney Love? The second line mentions "the way you die." Discussion involving Ms. Carroll all pertain to whether Kurt was murdered or committed suicide--aka, "the way you die."

"False starts, young hearts get shattered.
Pick up the pieces coming down around you.
You ran away, ran away, it was right on cue."

The "young hearts get shattered" line can refer to Kurt and Courtney's divorce.

That's all the interpreting that I have in me right now.

I hate the "every Foo Fighters" song is about Nirvana/Kurt... but a simple Google search for ("Dave Grohl" Rosemary) revealed the name Rosemary Carroll, who was Courtney Love's divorce lawyer.

One website revealed that "Rosemary Carroll [believed] that Kurt might have been murdered."

Can anyone shed some more credible light on this possibility?

P.S. Great song! (Like the entire album).

U2 – I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight Lyrics 15 years ago
MRoCkEd,

I'm not sure if Bono literally wrote the song about Fordham, or if he was just playing to the local crowd... I am leaning towards the latter.

I think Marquez has hit the nail on the head. This is one of my favorite tracks on the new album. Great job, U2!

U2 – Get On Your Boots Lyrics 15 years ago
hmmm now I am not sure whether that part of the song appeals to African women to stand up for themselves, or to all women of the world to stand up for African women. I think it is the latter.

It may help make this part clearer if you watch Part 4 of Bono's Speech here: http://www.one.org/blog/2008/10/23/video-bono-speaks-at-ca-women’s-conference/

He talks about how women are 80% of the farmers of the land in Africa, but they do not have any rights to own the land. Then he says, "It's gonna take women to stand up for other women to do something about that."

This speech was from October 2008, and I'm sure these ideas influenced this song.

To further up on my reply...

The idea of "boots" almost definitely refers to "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps." Which means empowering yourself and helping yourself out of your bad current situation.

So "sexy boots" is, well, boots worn by women. It seems as if Bono is addressing African women with this song, saying "get on your boots and pull yourself up" out of your current situation.

The "You don't know how beautiful you are" seems to also talk about women. Still consistent with the idea of empowering women--of feminism, of independence. In some areas of Africa, women are raped, treated horribly, and treated as possessions. Bono seems to be calling to them as if to say "You are better than that, you are more beautiful than to be treated like that."

The only part I can make out is

Women of the future
Hold the big revelations

http://www.womensenews.org/article.cfm/dyn/aid/1705/context/archive
It is said that women are the future of Africa in the sense that if they can be educated and gain local employment, they will stop having to travel to large cities to seek employment as social workers, where they are vulnerable to sexual exploitation and AIDS.

I am almost sure these lines reference this, as Bono has spoke of this multiple times in the past.
