I agree with you. I feel like this interpretation is consistent with Darnielle's themes and beliefs-- particularly the generalization of love/all things good, which he expresses by leaving "you" undefined.
And I love how you pointed out his metaphor for grace. From the interviews I've read with him, he seems pretty fascinated by the subject. I think he explores it a lot on this album, culminating in the last song, "Ezekiel 7." |

I disagree. I don't believe John Darnielle's ever claimed love is false-- but he does claim that it's different from our preconceptions. In an interview on NPR, he said: "We'll talk about how love is this benign comforting force-- it's not that, it's wild." |

I don't think so. I think he's only emphasizing "but the greatest of these is love" without actually mentioning it. And while I do believe he is questioning many of the positive attributes Paul ascribes to love, I think he's also trying to bend them; we interpret love as a positive thing, as we do kindness and patience, but can't those all be misconstrued? |
