Coldplay – See You Soon Lyrics 13 years ago
I think people are reading far too much into the lyrics, but that's what makes music relatable and universal.

Simply put, it seems be directed to those who have been hurt and withdrawn from the world.

"Bullet proof vest", "windows closed", "In a telescope lens when all you want is friends" = withdrawing, putting a metaphorical and/or literal wall up between yourself and others, watching from afar.
"You lost your trust and never should have", "they came snapping at your heals" = hurtful, painful event that triggered withdrawal.
"I'll see you soon", "I'll be doing my best", "Don't break your back if you ever see this" = reassurance the hurt will end soon, patience with the healing process until the person is able to allow others back in again. "Don't break your back" was a puzzling line, but in context it's used the same way "don't break your neck" is used when telling someone not to hurt themselves hurrying.

(I also have heard a rumor that the song was about suicide, so the lyrics could fit since hurting people generally become withdrawn before committing suicide.) But be it, suicide, love, death, violence, infidelity, fame; it all simply boils down to hurt, withdrawing, offering support. Sort of "one size fits all" lyrics, which makes it a great song to so many people in so many diverse situations.

Depeche Mode – Wrong Lyrics 14 years ago
A lot of people feel this is a depressing, fatalistic song, but to me is more of an acknowledgement of living, well, "wrong", and this realization is the first step towards making things right.

While written by Martin Gore, his reclusive nature leaves a lot of questions as to if this song is autobiographical - or if it's written from the eyes of lead singer, Dave Gahan. Assuming it is about Gahan, he stumbled into legal problems as a child after the death of his father, struggled with serious drug addiction, suicide attempts, several failed marriages (see the song "Precious" written regarding children and divorce, another issue both Gahan and Gore had in common).
After a decade or more of sobriety for Gahan, I think this song is an insightful reflection on the past, including the downfalls and negative opportunities fame gave to fuel several aspects of self-destruction.
As to the deterministic undertones, it could very well be from the 12-Steps program for sobriety; admitting one is powerless, making a searching and fearless moral inventory of oneself and admit when WRONG - the final step is to pass this message onto others.

I could be (pardon the pun) quite wrong about this interpretation, but it's the one that feels the most accurate taking into account the personal background of the singers and songwriters. Just sort of the simple explanation for a troubled past as "being in the wrong place at the wrong time".

Chairlift – Bruises Lyrics 15 years ago
To me it's about someone in a conflicted relationship. I don't know if I'd call it "love" or a "romantic" song, since I don't think miserable relationships are pleasurable or cute, but... whatever floats people's boats. To me, it's about a relationship with problems and one person trying their best to make things work, despite the one-sided cost and pain.
So, as catchy and upbeat as the song sounds, I get a subtle hint of something less than cheery behind the lyrics.
It's all in the interpretation, of course, and mine may be skewed. ;)

The Postal Service – This Place Is a Prison Lyrics 15 years ago
Like everyone else assumes, I think it's obviously what the lyrics spell out: being stuck in an undesirable scene. On a deeper level, I noticed that this song is all verse and bridge... no chorus. So, from a musically metaphorical standpoint, it could illustrate a life like the lyrics describe ("it happens every night") of mediocracy without ever fulfilling potential (such as reaching a main chorus). The end is inconclusive and unremarkable, just like a life of empty relationships and substance use/abuse.
I don't know if this was the intention in writing the song like this, but that's what it means to me beyond the lyrics. I really like this song; it reminds me of why I left the Pacific Northwest.
