Sufjan Stevens – Chicago Lyrics 15 years ago
Compared to Sufjan's other songs, this one is completely overrated. For me other songs from this album definitely overshadow this one. I would probably like it more if it was by someone else, but sufjan has done better than this many times. It frustrates me that most people know him by this song, because it is really mediocre compared to some of his other songs, such as casimir pulaski day, the predatory wasp of the palisades, the upper peninsula, all the trees of the field will clap their hands, etc.

Patrick Park – Life is a Song Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about living for life rather than the after-life. Don't hold yourself back to get into "heaven", because heaven probably doesnt even exist. I live for the life that i have and it's worth it.

Sufjan Stevens – The Mistress Witch from McClure (Or, the Mind That Knows Itself) Lyrics 15 years ago
such a beautiful song. This is my favorite off of avalanche. i always wondered about the ankle brace line. it doesnt really tie in with the rest of the song.

The New Pornographers – The Spirit of Giving Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about materialism and the problems that come with it. I love how they satire the holiday phrase "the sprit of giving" and instead say "the spirit of giving in". They mean that Americans give into conformity or materialism. I love the line "I was sick of America and her screaming decay."

The rave sound of the song is also a hint that it's about drugs.

Stars – Barricade Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song. The line that gets me is:

"The love died, but the hate can't fade."

It's almost haunting.

The Postal Service – The District Sleeps Alone Tonight Lyrics 15 years ago
I thought this song was about loneliness and unwelcomeness but i really like mrvonhayes' interpretation. This could definitely be about the war.

This song portrays so much raw emotion. When i listen to it i feel like a friend is venting to me.

Dispatch – The General Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is just a general anti-war song. I agree with dispatch in that war is useless. There are better ways to solve problems, and in a society like ours that is changing all the time, it's ridiculous that we still attempt to solve problems by killing eachother.

Death Cab for Cutie – Grapevine Fires Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is obviously about death. But also the entertainment that we find in other people's distress and how little a stranger's life can mean to us. In the song they went to the cemetery with wine and watched. And the daughter dancing in the cemetery is a metaphor as well. It reminds me of war and how some can think that their beliefs are worth taking many strangers' lives. That isn't completely related to the song but that's what it makes me think about.

I think this song is about how people change without being aware. You dont really know how you got the way you are.

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 15 years ago
makes me cry everytime. i introduced this song to a friend whose mother had recently died of cancer and she broke down. i dont know if this song is based on sufjan's experience or if this is a fictional story, but if it is fictional, then he is simply a genius at portraying emotions through his music.

Sufjan Stevens – The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is easily my favorite song by Sufjan and one of my favorite songs in general. It has so many different phases. The beginning is soft and absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Then the song just builds throughout. In my opinion this song expresses the epitome of childhood. The first stanza is so familiar to me, because I remember staying up late at night when I was a kid, doodling or writing stories.
I think the rest of this song is simply about a childhood friendship. The kissing is just teasing, as he said "Oh how I meant no harm." He also said they wrestled which is something that children do all the time when they play. The "We were in love" part expresses how children love the outdoors and love to play. Also the last verse about swaying into the car and falling asleep in the backseat reminds me of having a big fun adventurous day as a kid and the exhaustion that follows. The line "Oh admiration in falling asleep" gives me goosebumps everytime I hear this song. He admires the fact that after such an amazing day he can rest and be ready for it again the next day. I guess we take advantage of that.
