I think that the lyrics refer to passages from Ezekiel 3 and Revelations 10:

Rev 10 -
8 Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me once more: “Go, take the scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”
9 So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’” 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11 Then I was told, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.”

Similar imagery in the ezekiel passage about being given a prophesy in the form of a scroll, which tastes like honey when eaten. I think in this context the words and the book are a metaphor for "the law", as set forth in the biblical old testament. I assume that because of the last verse:

"When I lost all hope to look
someone took that heavy book from my hands
all its weight they set aside
after they had satisfied its demands"

Which would make the most sense to me as saying that the intervention of god satisfied the perfect, but ultimately fatal requirements of the words, which is itself the central concept of the song. It's something that is the answer, it is perfect, but it will kill you.

He knew he lost it, had to find it, when he did he knew it was going to kill him
Knew I lost something/Knew they'd lay me in my grave

He describes the feeling as tasting sweet, wholesome when in his mouth, but turning bitter when he tries to internalize them, as though they're a poison
Honey on my lips/Bitter twist in my side

He even describes the words as being both beautiful and dreadful, belying their nature
They were Beautiful and Dread

So then along comes jesus and the new testament and changes everything up and the words of the book are satisfied in his sacrifice, blah blah, I'm not actually christian but I like this song regardless, it's some pretty neat poetry and it's beautiful to listen to, feels mysterious. If anyone else has any alternative interpretations I'd love to know what they are though.

Scratch my last reply, after listening to the ending again, it's definitely not the right set of pronouns to give my theory any credence.

I doubt Dustin was thinking of that event specifically when he wrote this, namely because he doesn't mention anything in the lyrics which aren't typical signs of domestic abuse.

Not to mention, when police solved they case, didn't they find that the kidnappee and her 2 daughters were quite well cared for? Not really bruises and bleeding like the song describes.

I'd say it's safe to say that the term "less than half a man" definitely applies to the kidnapper though.

Always some intent on turning every thrice song into a religious parable. Some songs are very obviously religious, this one is very obviously not. I know it says "praying lord" in one of the verses, but you've gotta look a little deeper than that to understand the song man!

The lyrics describe an individual or a group of people who:
Are supposed to bless, but instead injure
Breathe blackness and cause bruises
Darken and pull the color from "someone"s world
(That "someone" being described as a female individual in a closet praying to god for help.)
The chorus condemns this person as unmanly (less than half a man), cowardly (yellow bellied), and guilty (blood on his hands).

Seems quite obvious it's a song about domestic violence/abuse against women.

Pretty sure you've got it backwards, the lyrics say: What mercy have they known from you/I ask that it be shown to you.

What he's saying is; you have shown no mercy toward others, I hope that you are shown the same amount of mercy (i.e. none).

FightOffYourDemonsThrice, I think you heard the second meaning. Thrice songs are often multi-layered, I imagine that Dustin chose this movie to make into a song because he saw a religious allegory in it. Or maybe we're just two rabid christian maniacs who like to read into everything and somehow find Jesus in obscure circumstances. Except, I'm not christian and who knows if you are so, no.

Thrice – The Sky Is Falling Lyrics 13 years ago
I see a lot of comments here about the iraq war, and while some of the comments here have convinced me that the current conflicts in the middle east played a role in the creation of this song, I have yet to see anyone mention the things that I had thought of regarding it's meaning.

Some of you Thrice fans may recall that a percentage of the procede's from the Vheissu were donated to the non-profit "invisible children", an organization concerned with rehabilitating and educating children who had been recruited into Ugandan militias. That right there says that Thrice has a worldwide scope in mind with their music, and when I heard this song for the first time, the first thing I thought of was african conflicts like the apartheid or in uganda. Many of which are mirrored in the Sunni/Shiite conflicts as well as the Muslim/Israeli fighting. America did not even come into my mind as a player in this except as the subject of the line:

"The sky is falling and no one
Will care as long as it lands overseas"

Refering to how little the average American person (Or really even the average person in any modern developed country) cares about anything other than their own personal comfort and advancement. Meanwhile, families from conflict torn countries are worried about whether their children will live another year. The theme in the lines:

"I want to be strong enough
To not let my fears decide my fate
Surrounded by jingoists;
I don't want any part of this
I want to be strong enough,
To not let my terror turn to hate"

Describes the cycle in so many of these types of conflicts, the Sunni/Shiite conflict being a perfect example of one group seeking vengeance on another group, which results in a violent reaction from that group, and so on, back and forth, fear and hate fueling in one group fueling fear and hate in the other, despite the fact that the groups are usually very similar (miles apart but worlds away), the separating factor being the loyalistic fervor that they work their members up into over perceived or actual wrongdoing.

Just my take, like I said, I saw it as a song about a much more international problem, not completely focused on the middle east alone.

As a side note, I'm not sure what's the significance of "shadows forming on the pavement"? I saw someone suggested that it referred to the silhouettes left behind by people in the blast of a nuclear bomb, I also saw something about it being the shadows of bombs falling, I suppose it could be either; but I had expected it's meaning to tie closer into the preceding line about dancing a jingo cabaret...
