The Connells – Fun & Games Lyrics 8 years ago
A creepy, intrusive stalker.

Metric – Lost Kitten Lyrics 8 years ago
A tight friendship, bordering into romance, between a sex worker and the narrator. The narrator is wistful and sees the good in them even though it can't work out the way they'd like. They try to get their friend help with their coke addiction out of compassion, and put in a lot of effort covering for them so they can get on their feet.

Against Me! – Drinking With The Jocks Lyrics 8 years ago
Trying to pass as a cishet dude is terrifying. You know deep down they'd destroy you if they knew who and what you really are.

Against Me! – Walking Is Still Honest Lyrics 8 years ago
This is a little tricky as the perspective shifts between the kid and the mom. The narrator is in despair, and the mom never had any illusions about the life her kid would lead if they followed their ideals. Living on the street is terrifying and very hard, but worthwhile if it's in the name of something bigger than dying like a rat. The narrator feels abandoned by god and is estranged from their family, but they haven't given up.

Walking is still honest because when you have nothing else, you still have your legs to carry you (until they give out on you, too). My knees are permanently fucked from having to move all my belongings on my own with no car 3 yimes in almost as many years. If you've been homeless, you'll do a lot of walking around, just looking for food, trying to get to a place where you can sleep.

22 days until the end of the world: 22 days until getting evicted from the shit apartment with asbestos and lead paint

You can be anything if you're on your knees: being desperate for money will make you do anything, maybe even sell yourself just to get that rent paid

Against Me! – Thrash Unreal Lyrics 8 years ago
In a lot of punk scenes, girls and women are treated as tired old slags by the time they're 25. Old-ass men who've been at it since the 80s will be creeping at the shows and acting like punk rock Bill Cobsy with the drugs they have on offer, but people see that as something to respect.

Reactions to this song demonstrate the double standard. If you're a punk rock girl who's still into it past your prime, you're used up and sad, but if you're a dude, you're cool, authentic, a role model for younger punks, and can use your status to fuck kids

Against Me! – I Was a Teenage Anarchist Lyrics 8 years ago
I don't think this is Laura turning her back on punk, either politically or musically. She's just trying to explain herself and her motivations.

Anarcho-punk is a tough place to be if you don't walk in lockstep and have your blinkers on every moment of the day. You start talking about other issues, or slip up in your masc uberpunk presentation, and all your buddies will turn on you, calling you "ironic" slurs (haha, it's ok because they're punk and can't actually mean it).

After I came out as transgender all my anarcho-punk friends disappeared and abandoned me, but I should have dropped them earlier anyway because they were gross misogynists and kept deadnaming political activists they said they "supported".

RVIVR – Resilient Bastard Lyrics 8 years ago
The narrator is describing a role play scenario in therapy, and reading a self-help book. They're being taught coping skills and they're trying their best because they really want to get better, but the situation is kind of silly. They're still hot-headed about things and practicing their resilient coping skills through clenched teeth.

RVIVR – LMD Lyrics 8 years ago
A LMD/Life Model Decoy is something from Marvel, specifically S.H.I.E.L.D. They look, behave, smell, taste(?), etc exactly like the person they're presenting as, but they're artificial constructs, like a replicant or clone. They can be remote-controlled and the person controlling them can see what they see. Maybe that makes the video make a little more sense. I'm not knowledgeable enough in the comics to relate it to the song.

To me, the song sounds like a pep talk for an exhausted punk living in poverty and feeling despair over all the factions that want a piece of them. Fight for your life and let your inner light guide you.

The Thermals – A Pillar of Salt Lyrics 11 years ago
Well, holy shit. I guess I'm the only queer on this page. I don't know about you guys, but when I hear a song about a couple fleeing the city of Sodom due to persecution for sin and dirty bodies, I tend to think of sodomy, and the sort of couples the acts known as sodomy were associated with. I think of my girlfriend, and how she has to defend against straight opinions regarding her sexuality. I think of how I grew up surrounded by an atmosphere of fear regarding my deepest loves and basic identity. I think of the American states which have only recently overturned laws regarding sodomy, or have yet to do so, due to their oppressive Christian beliefs. I particularly think of the conservative assholes who hate queer and trans* people so much that the country envisioned in this album seems not all that far off for me and mine.

Coyote Shivers – Sugar High (Soundtrack Version) Lyrics 14 years ago
I saw Empire Records about a hundred times when I was 10 years old. It's pretty hilarious how smutty the original lyrics are. Clearly the whole point of the song is, "Baby, your cunt tastes delicious!"

Wolf Parade – Same Ghost Every Night Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it's about the flashbacks from PTSD. They can be very repetitive and literally leave you gasping for breath, because they make you feel as if you're living out the traumatic event again.

Matt Skiba – In Your Wake Lyrics 15 years ago
A street kid, maybe a gutter punk with big ideals, tried to live his life according to his ethics, but the streets were too hard and he died too young. What he's left behind are some really traumatized friends. They feel dead without him. They tried really hard to help him, but he died on them anyway.

Metric – Combat Baby Lyrics 15 years ago
"Old World Underground Where Are You Now" is the title of the album, and this song is lamenting the disappearance of rebel anger from the music scene. The "mighty mild 70s child" are the Gen X hipsters who are too lame and PC to fight for real change. They might dress like punks, but they have none of the early punk scene's righteous indignation. The guy who took off on Emily represents one of the few who aren't apathetic and who still want to kick ass. Emily tries to compromise and fit in, but it just wears her out and she can't understand why all the spineless hipsters around her have it so good.
