Regina Spektor – The Calculation Lyrics 15 years ago
Yes, you're right. Sad song. Are we content with a calculation of love?

that makes sense, but how does it relate to 20 years of snow?

I'm not sure if I agree with you or not. What an ideal. Unreachable of course. Though, just like communism, it looks so good on paper. I don't think it would really work out.
But what an ideal.

That's hilarious. Luca was my favorite song forever, and now this is. As soon as I heard this and the Lucille part I thought of Luca. Especially the "My name is lucille, I live downstairs...", as Luca also mentions someone living in the same apartment, although it's about someone being abused.

Yeah, I've heard that many of her songs are based off of literature from her childhood or life, or are even about characters made up in her head. She's so different, and so talented. :)

This song is all over the place, that's my favorite part. It's like 5 different genres and songs all in one. Amazing :)

That's so true. What people don't get is that even if her music is becoming more "mainstream" (although in reality it's not, atleast not to the extent that much music has), it's simply because that's the musical direction SHE wants to take. It's not because she wants to make more money, or she think that she'll gain more fans. If her purpose was that, she'd get a studio band, a lyricist that would write more accessable lyrics (that don't require sites like this, haha), add a pop-y pre-mixed background to each song, and write all songs in the radio-playable style of Folding Chair, as opposed to The Sword & the Pen.

Funny, I love Neil Young too. Both he and Regina know how to make music.

The thing I love about regina is her incredible range. From "Flyin" on 11:11, to "Your Honor" on Soviet Kitsch, to "Edit" on Begin to Hope, and to "Folding Chair" on Far, she incredibly captures so many emotions. Each CD exemplifies her incredible talent in different ways. I'm glad each one is so dramatically different, yet the same in their being specifically Regina Spektor.

I still need to order "Songs" via reginaspektor.net, as it's not available on iTunes or in the US.

Kelsska,

I agree that Far isn't regina with her drumstick hitting a chair, or Regina with nothing but her voice (songs off of 11:11), but it's new and I am liking it a lot. Also, songs like The Sword & the Pen and Man of a Thousand Faces are almost reminiscent of pre-Begin to Hope Regina. On the other hand, Begin to Hope was the first CD I heard by Regina. I fell in love with it and bought her previous ones. I think songs like Dance Anthem of the 80s and Folding Chair are going towards that upbeat sound that Begin to Hope almost reached with songs like Fidelity, Hotel Song, and On The Radio.

Still, I love just about everything Regina has released (or not released, oops illegal downloading!), and this CD is just another exposition of her range and incredible ability to make music.

Regina Spektor – Folding Chair Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that it's a song about happiness and life and not necessarily getting everything you want, but getting everything you need and making do with the rest.

"I have a perfect body, but sometimes I forget.
I have a perfect body, because my eyelashes catch my sweat."
These lines are very feminist in the ideal of a perfect body not being slim or visually appealing, but functional in the way that makes each individual person content. The "sometimes I forget" explains the insecurity many women have about their body and appearance.

The upbeat and "happy" sound of this song make it hard to believe it could be a "sad song", but more a song about being content, and trying to get others around you to understand that happiness really can come easily.
"Maybe one day you'll understand
That I want nothing from you but to sweetly hold your hand
Till that day just please don't be so down
Don't make frowns, you silly clown"
These lines to me represent a girl that loves and is happy, even though her boyfriend doesn't think she's content, or he might not even be satisfied himself. He's more complex, and focused on finding things to make his life happy and complete, even if they're cliche ("you silly clown". Clowns are stereotypically symbols of happiness), while she is simply happy with sweetly holding his hand. Such a heartfelt but light song. Incredible.

that's so real, and it would be what she intended, as far as I know.

I agree with the part about the future pre-war apartment as meaning there will always be war. How does regina so skillfully craft all these meanings into such a seemingly simple song? Incredible.

You've done a lot of analyzing, thanks to you and all others who put in the time to help the rest of us understand what she might have intended by songs like this. I'm curious, how does Pavlov's Daughter potentially support the idea of the necessity of traveling in "tanks"? That's arguably my all time favorite song, making me curious.

that makes sense. I agree that it's about different personalities around different groups of people. Everyone's experienced that; that's what's so great about all of her songs.

wow, I've never thought about it that way. But that definitely makes sense. Most of her songs from Far are filled with deep religious or philosophical undertones, but this one could just be about writing and singing beautiful music. That would make sense, because she definitely knows how to write and sing beautiful music. :)

Sublime – What I Got Lyrics 15 years ago
"life is too short so love the one you got, cause you might get runover or you might get shot."
SOOOOOOOO true.
it bothers me when people obsess over the most inconsequential and unimportant aspects of why there life's perfect, when who knows, they could be dead the next day, and they would probably wish they didnt spend so much time making their hair look perfect. And yeah, you might have a bad situation, a bad life, like he says in this song, but you gotta love it and you gotta make the best and you gotta live it, cause feeling bad for yourself isnt gonna help a thing.
