O.A.R. – Shattered (Turn the Car Around) Lyrics 15 years ago
I guess I shouldve read your before I posted. I thought the same exact thing! The word "thing" in the last line leaves it wide open. Maybe I interpret it this way because it lines up with my own personal life. I am glad to see that someone else found the same "thing" I did. Hopefully, you can't parallel it to your life though. ;)

O.A.R. – Shattered (Turn the Car Around) Lyrics 15 years ago
Let me start off by saying that it is such a wonderful thing that music can be interpreted in different ways. I love this site because I can read through other's interpretation and maybe pick up on something I never thought of before. This in turn can make the song almost new again, hearing it through another.

I have read through a few of the comments above and while I did digest this song much in the same way, circumstances in my own personal life have made me question the very last phrases of this song. Could they change the whole story?

At first I took this song to be a couple where the narrator has been hurt by the other person in the relationship, and though the narator is hurt he always sticks out the relationship. He is torn and wonders how much more he can take before he shatters. Now the last two lines...

Don't wanna turn that car around
I gotta turn this thing around

Maybe he finally came to the realization that he's been hurt over and over, he has to face reality and see that it isn't going change, although he may love her he has to let go. The final line might be saying I have to break this cycle of going back, I need to walk away. I gotta turn this "thing" around. Not the car, but the path that he kept turning back to. Does that make sense?
