Uncle Tupelo – Train Lyrics 10 years ago
Not Roger McWilliams, but Roger McGuinn of the Byrds, who sang those words in "Turn! Turn! Turn!" They're from the Book of Ecclesiastes.

Also, my ears tell me he's singing "Where does my dying go? What for?"

Nick Lowe – Rollers Show Lyrics 12 years ago
Not...

"When everyone's distracted at the Rollers show tonight"

...but...

"When Eric strums his Strat at the Rollers show tonight"

...referring to BCRs guitarist Eric Faulkner. Right?

I love the description of the two short-timers, Ian Mitchell and Pat McGlynn, as well!

The New Pornographers – We End Up Together Lyrics 14 years ago
Says Carl Newman: "It's a song about all of the times in the past that I had met my wife, or been in the same room as my wife, and had been completely unaware that, well, we end up together."

>> Heaven Hill make whiskey, but i don't know why a girl from there would be talking about Husker Du <<

"The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill" is a Husker Du song, from the 'New Day Rising' album:

M. Ward – Shangri-La Lyrics 14 years ago
"This Time Tomorrow" and "Shangri-La" are two of the very best Kinks songs, and "My Sweet Lord" is a single from George Harrison's triple album 'All Things Must Pass.' Surely M. Ward has spent time with them all.

'Up On The Sun' is a Meat Puppets song, and also a Meat Puppets album. I suspect Ward is a fan; I know he likes some other SST stuff.

Seems like Ward might have been having fun constructing a song out of other song titles, and adding his own connective tissue. There might be some other references in there too. Anyone?

To my ears, the last two words are "terrible significance."

Smokey Robinson – The Tears Of A Clown Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm pretty sure he's "smiling in the public eye," not "smiling in the club at night."

Among the many things I love about this record:

--the bassoon countermelody
--the fact that this piece of music was a surprise gift from Stevie Wonder to Smokey Robinson at the 1966 Motown Christmas party
--the way Smokey saves the clown reference until the very end of the first verse
--the fact that Pagliacci is in this song at all
--the incredibly subtle timing of the words in the second verse
--the way the drummers interact

It's one of the very very best Motown ever produced, and that's saying a lot. Wow!

Van Morrison – Saint Dominic's Preview Lyrics 15 years ago
"I'd been working on this song about the scene going down in Belfast. And I wasn't sure what I was writing but anyway the central image seemed to be this church called St. Dominic's where people were gathering to pray or hear a mass for peace in Northern Ireland. Anyway, a few weeks ago I was in Reno for a gig at the University of Nevada. And while we were having dinner I picked up the newspaper and just opened it to a page and there in front of me was an announcement about a mass for peace in Belfast to be said the next day at St. Dominic's church in San Francisco. Totally blew me out. Like I'd never even heard of a St. Dominic's church.

[Q:] What did you end up titling it?

'St. Dominic's Preview.' You know something? I haven't a clue to what it means."

Camper Van Beethoven – Sweethearts Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm quite sure Lowery sings "circa 1949" and not "stuck in 1949."

Reagan's boyhood home was Dixon, Illinois.

Jolie Holland – Palmyra Lyrics 15 years ago
The line in question is "sweet Palmyra and that old Ninth Ward." I assume it refers to the neighborhood of New Orleans that was especially devastated during Katrina.

Hm, "in a peace"? Isn't that "inner peace"?

The Zombies – Brief Candles Lyrics 15 years ago
The title also refers to the "tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow" soliloquy in Shakespeare's 'Macbeth'.
