Depeche Mode – John The Revelator Lyrics 13 years ago
Only disappointing if you're Christian. Being an apatheist (that's apatheist, not atheist) I don't give a shit what their views on Christianity are, or religion as a whole for that matter.

Spock's Beard – Beware Of Darkness Lyrics 14 years ago
A (rather good) cover of the George Harrsion song, which takes it's name from a quote of Jesus from Matthew 24:6-8 (as does the album that the original Harrison track is from, All Things Must Pass).

Lyrically I think this song is just discussing and warning the listener of the things Jesus spoke of in the Bible passage, particularly the first two verses.

I love the alternate, line-by-line vocals of Josh and Dave in the pre-chorus. It's Queens and the Foo in perfect measure. Tasty.

Yoko Kanno – Ask DNA Lyrics 15 years ago
I think there's a few messages in here and they're all pretty general themes in life. It's mostly about having acceptance of the unchangable things in life and searching for answers.

"Gummed up, brain dead? Can't decide
You can't pray enough, you can't hide
You can be cool or you can cry
Do it wrong
Not [at] all
Or do it right"

I think this verse is about accepting your flaws whether they be acquired (gummed/messed up) or inherited (brain dead/stupid) because in the end there's not much you can do to change the fundamental ones. You can pray as much as you want and they will remain. "You can be cool or you can cry" and they will remain. Then the last three lines are about living life (wrong, right or not at all) in acceptence of these flaws.

"No one owes you, no one's to blame
Save for bad genes or DNA
Ask your conscience the why and how
Do it then
Do it when
But, do it now"

This verse is about how the study of DNA and the discovery of its role in our personalities/behaviours has alleviated responsibility for our actions ("No one owes you, no one's to blame
Save for bad genes or DNA"). Then we're told that we should decide for ourselves whether or not DNA should grant any kind of absolution ("Ask your conscience the why and how"). The last three lines give urgency to this ("But, do it now").

"No we all can't be superfly
GQPhdFBI
You can pretend or you can try
Move ahead
Lay down dead
Or slip on by"

This is another theme of acceptance. It's true: we can't all wear designer clothing or get PhDs or be in the FBI. We can all pretend to have/be these things and we can all also try to attain them. In the end there are three options though: you can strive to achieve ("move ahead"), you can give up ("lay down dead") or you can just cruise through life and not care("slip on by").

"When the truth seems so far away
Buddha loves you and Jesus saves
You need answers for your dismay
Ask yourself
Ask your mom
Ask DNA"

This verse is about seeking answers to the big questions in life and having to sift through tons of opinions to find what resonates with you. We all seek the truth but it usually appears almost unattainable and we are bombarded with different religions, philosophies and schools of thought ("Buddha loves you and Jesus saves") all looking to fill the gaps in our lives. However, despite the seemingly impossible task of getting said answers we continue to seek them and look everywhere for them ("Ask yourself/Ask your mom/Ask DNA").

"What's up sweet cakes?
Who's hip anyway?
Earthgirls are easy
Whatcha gonna do, lil' buckaroo?
(Hey you, you better ask her nice!)
All you gotta do, happy fool, is ask your mom"

The chorus is a little more difficult to decypher. I don't think any of it has anything to do with the other themes of the song apart from maybe the last line. The first five just have to do with the world of Cowboy Bebop I think. Are Earth girls easy in post-apocalyptic 2071? I don't know. The last line though is just an advisory one. Want answers? Ask your mum. Mother's are, for the most part, pretty smart ladies. Hey I just realised I'm posting this on Mother's Day. Happy Mother's Day all you mums out there! :)

David Bowie – D.J. Lyrics 15 years ago
Also, in the first line it's "lost my job", not "love".

I always thought of the lines "I've got a girl out there, I suppose/I think she's dancing" as meaning that he has a girl and he thinks she's out there cheating on him.

I love this song. I think it perfectly captures a young and playful David; joking around in the recording studio. The intro to Andy Warhol from Hunky Dory has much the same feel.

conduit, I think you're dead on with the interpretation that the three characters named in the song are infact different parts of a central character: the narrator. Take for example these lines from the second verse: "Henry, he went South and lost his way/Deep in the weeping forests/Of le vulva". The subtext here is fairly obvious; "Henry" is the narrator's lust and the rest quite clearly references the location and appearence of female genitalia. Wow, that sounded really clinical. Oh well, not to worry. You get what I mean ;)

I think the song is generally about a young girl and her much older drug dealer, who is referred to in the lyrics as "Mr. Sandman".

The first line where it says "Little Janie, she wakes up from a dream..." could be talking about her coming done from a drug high, which would make "Mr. Sandman" her dealer as in conventional meaning Mr. Sandman is the one who sends us of to sleep and gives us dreams. Also note where it says "There oughta be a law against me going down on the street". Why should such a thing be true unless he was engaged in illegal activity?

Janie may also be in some sort of trouble with her Sandman as is evident in the lyrics "Mr Sandman runs around the corner/Trying to head her off at the pass/He sticks his head over the fence and yells/Something way to fast...". Perhaps she owes him money?

She's a cautious girl, though. The "jawbone" done the waistband of her jeans is undoubtedly a gun as they are vaguely shaped like the jawbones of certain four-legged animals.

There's also a lot of sexual desire in the Sandman for Janie as can be seen in virtually the entirety of the last verse.

I dunno, there's a lot to read into hear. A LOT.
