Iron Maiden – Transylvania Lyrics 14 years ago
There are numerous references to important historical events or legends throughout IM discography.
I find almost mandatory to have some knowledge about history (or at least do some research) if you want to fully enjoy IM songs and lyrics.

Even in this case, only the title was enough to open a heated debate :)

Iron Maiden – Transylvania Lyrics 15 years ago
My dear Iron Maiden fan,

1. Transylvania is the nucleus of the Dacian Kingdom (82BC - 106AD). What you probably refuse to acknowledge is the fact that the dacians are the ancestors of the romanians, the same way the gauls are the ancestors of the french.
2. The maghiars CONQUERED the territory around the year 1000. It's funny to believe that such a vast and beautiful territory was not populated!
3. I might give you credit for the mongolic origin. In fact, the origin of the magyar nomadic tribes, invading from asia, is not very clear, indeed. There are some theories about their turcik origin. The turks have theories about the turcik origins of the mongols. And we come back full circle.

Please do not mix-up the history of a population with the history of their rulers. In the same way the daco-romans were conquered and ruled by leaders from different other migrations (including the magyars), the roman population in Italy was conquered and occupied by various barbaric tribes (i.e. the lombards) the gaulo-roman population in France was conquered by the francs, among others etc ...
Did you know that the oldest modern human remains in Europe were discovered in a transylvanian cave (over 35.000 years old)? And you guys are claiming the huns found Transilvanya empty and then invited romanians in! Nice joke!
The language study is the most powerful tool to assess the origin of the populations.
Italians speak a latin language today, meaning most of the population has a latin origin.
Romanian speak a latin language today, meaning most of the population has also a latin origin. This means some sort of a latin language was spoken in Transylvania way before the huns invaded.
You could also claim the franks (germanic tribe) found France empty. But the population in France still speaks a latin language (and not some sort of german) proving the gaulo-romanic origin of the conquered population.
The hungarians didn't ignore the existence of the romanian majority. On the contrary, they issued an ethnic cleansig decree in 1366 (decree of Turda) called to "expel from Transylvania or exterminate malefactors belonging to any other nations, especially romanians"
4. The fact that Romania became o modern state with agreed political borders only last century, has little to do with the origins of the romanians (including the romanians from Transylvania). I can give you countless examples of modern countries created only recently around a population majority.

and BTW, the song is called Transylvania (latin origin), not Erdely :)

Up the Irons!

MaidenManiac, my brother, watch your language!

Transylvania is indeed a very beautiful place, but contrary to your ignorance, it's full of history and culture since more than 2000 years, way before the HUNgarian mongolic tribes invaded from the asian steppe. They ruled Transylvania and it's Romanian population for a few hundreds of years, only.
BTW, about half of the world belonged for a while to the Roman empire. Do you see Italy claiming the ownership of Europe, Middle East, North Africa?
Let's stop the stupid politics and discuss about our favourite band, please!
