A Perfect Circle – A Stranger Lyrics 9 years ago
By far best interpretation here. Licensed counselor familiar with addiction gives his seal of approval.

Within The Ruins – Eternal Shore Lyrics 9 years ago
Band stated in interview that each song is about a different comic book character(s), but that the lyrics are also written vaguely enough to be relateable.

Characters: I am 90% certain this is about Jean Grey becoming the Pheonix. The fire line in particular is telling. The line, "I am the rocks of the eternal shore: crash against me and be broken," is actually a quote from Apocalypse, but the lyrics are written about a female character.

General message: Taken out of context, this almost sounds like wanting to get with a girl that you put on a pedestal, but she is also either unobtainable or a complete snob/maneater.

The band has made a picture to accompany each song, which gives away who they were referring to. This one sports a picture of Venom. I was getting warmer.

Within The Ruins – Sentinel Lyrics 9 years ago
Band stated in interview that each song is about a different comic book character(s), but that the lyrics are also written vaguely enough to be relateable.

Characters: I struggled with this one at first. I thought maybe Lex Luther, but this character was obviously more good than him. My wife was the one to actually figure it out. It's Tony Stark, IRON MAN. Rich? check. Sold weapons for wars? check. Became advocate for peace? check. Bonded to a machine that can touch the sky"? check.

General message: A "sentinel" is a soldier or guard whose job is to stand and keep watch. In general the song is about watching out for others and trading wealth and fame for heroism.

Within The Ruins – Dark Monarch Lyrics 9 years ago
Band stated in interview that each song is about a different comic book character(s), but that the lyrics are also written vaguely enough to be relateable.

Characters: raised in shadows? symbol of fear? use of stealth? Duh, it's my all-time favorite: Batman. Also, "Dark Monarch" obviously similar to "Dark Knight." For you philistines out there, a monarch is a king.

General message: Embracing your fears and using them to become more.

Within The Ruins – Clockwork Lyrics 9 years ago
Band stated in interview that each song is about a different comic book character(s), but that the lyrics are also written vaguely enough to be relateable.

Characters: '"I took a Sin City and Watchmen concept and tried to mash them together," Goergen says. "That was actually the last song I wrote for the album and is the strongest, lyrically, I would say."' Those who have read the Watchmen will recognize Rorschach's style of narration in this song (and direct reference in the "beaten child"), but there is definitely some Dwight and Marv from Sin City as well.

General message: Standing up against a broken system, but not even knowing how or where to begin.

Within The Ruins – Ronin Lyrics 9 years ago
Band stated in interview that each song is about a different comic book character(s), but that the lyrics are also written vaguely enough to be relateable.

Characters: They explicitly said that this one is about Wolverine. He has lived a long time and is haunted by his past.

General message: Dealing with trauma and the past, PTSD. Both the coping qualities and and detriment of rage.

From wikipedia: A rōnin was a samurai with no lord or master during the feudal period (1185–1868) of Japan. A samurai became masterless from the death or fall of his master, or after the loss of his master's favor or privilege.

Characters: Another obvious one due to the Uncle Ben quote: Spiderman.

General message: Doing what is right even when it is difficult.

Hegira:
-Muhammad's departure from Mecca to Medina in AD 622, prompted by the opposition of the merchants of Mecca and marking the consolidation of the first Muslim community.

-an exodus or migration.

Within The Ruins – Calling Card Lyrics 9 years ago
Band stated in interview that each song is about a different comic book character(s), but that the lyrics are also written vaguely enough to be relateable.

Characters: One of my personal favorites: The Joker (this one is fairly obvious)

General message: Similar to "The Other": accepting our darker thoughts. Embracing chaos, the fragility of the human mind under duress.

Band stated in interview that each song is about a different comic book character(s), but that the lyrics are also written vaguely enough to be relateable.

Characters: At first I was sure that this was Two-face (particularly due to "choosing victims most carefully," as with his coin. But then as I was typing I noticed the alternating of capitalizing "Carnage," (these lyrics are straight from the CD booklet) which made me consider it was the villain of the same name from Spiderman. Really I think either fits.

General message: Contemplating madness, schizophrenia, becoming complete through accepting our darker thoughts and inclinations.

Within The Ruins – Gods Amongst Men Lyrics 9 years ago
Band stated in interview that each song is about a different comic book character(s), but that the lyrics are also written vaguely enough to be relateable.

Characters: This is a conversation between Professor X and Magneto

General message: The warring views between peace and harmony vs. segregation and manifest destiny. Magneto's parts remind me somewhat of Hitler and the "master race," whereas Xavier is more of a Martin Luther King figure.

System of a Down – Nuguns Lyrics 15 years ago
I can't believe not a single person here got that the spelling of the song title with umlaut is partially a joke on the stupid nu-metal (forgive me for being too lazy to get an umlauted u) label they were slapped with like so many other bands of the time. It fits with with the themes you've come up with on a symbolic level.
