Junior Boys – Count Souvenirs Lyrics | 9 years ago |
The "please don't touch" refrains specifically references the past being like a museum, and using the words of museum placards ("please don't touch") to both draw reference to the past as an archive and to the fact that the past should be left alone so as not to cause present pain. Time wounds all heals. I think the pronoun usage and the fact that this is one of the songs on their breakup record suggests that this is remembering a lover's house. That said, at times it does seem like he's talking to a younger version of himself, a self he can't access anymore but to rhapsodize at a distance so as not to cause himself too much pain now. |
Autre ne Veut – Gonna Die Lyrics | 11 years ago |
The second stanza begins with the line "Death is staring back through the mirror." The next line is "The lines on my face say I am / I'm okay for a while." He does a lot of vocal trickery to these lines but those are the lyrics. Also, in the fourth stanza, it's "These lines on my face say that I'll be okay for a while." Minor issues: "Someday" is one word. "awhile" is two words when it comes after "for." |
Hail Mary Mallon – Breakdance Beach Lyrics | 12 years ago |
RapGenius does this song more justice. Here're some notes: 1. It's "fake-ass beefs" not "beats." 2. The line is "Train-crash screech like a stray bansee." This refers to DJs suddenly stopping a record. 3. It's "Dr. Zaius," not "Dr. Zeus." 4. Aes says "Take a breaker out the [something]," but the something isn't bar key. 5. "Nathan's theme party, dames can't tease," not "please." Anyone know what "Take Francine 'cause you're lame, Stanley" means. I thought it had something to do with Stanley Kubrick. Does "Good Morning, U.S.A." really refer to the American Dad theme? And who the hell is Nathan? |
Hail Mary Mallon – Breakdance Beach Lyrics | 12 years ago |
That line makes perfect sense and is totally correct. By the A&P (a grocery store chain in the Northeast) selling heroin and ecstasy. |
Okkervil River – I Guess We Lost Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I've been listening to this one over and over. Not to sound like an obscurist, but I think this may be better than anything on I Am Very Far, and I love I Am Very Far. |
Okkervil River – Gold Faces Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The last line may need help. It gets pretty garbled by the song's crescendo. Any other ideas what he says? Overall, one of Sheff's most obtuse tracks lyrically, but one that's more about evocative, vivid imagery than coherent narrative or encompassing theme. Maybe. There's a definite dichotomy going on, but I can't figure what it all means, if it does mean anything. |
Okkervil River – Millionaire Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The first ???? is "bus bunk bed" as in the bunk bed in Millionaire's tour bus. "Here are the women by his side: The fresh-fucked friend, the bus bunk bed there giving head through that long ride..." I guess Sheff's eliding an "on" here: the fresh-fucked friend is ON the bunk bed there giving head to Millionaire. |
Cam'ron – Oh Boy Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Does anyone know what Cam'ron says in Verse 3 instead of "Be on the block with my boy, with the Roc fella (boy)"? First off, it's "BEAT on the block with my (boy)," but I can't understand the second line. It's definitely NOT "with the Roc fella (boy)." I know he signed to Roc-A-Fella, but that's not what he says there. Help! |
TV on the Radio – Bomb Yourself Lyrics | 13 years ago |
On a brief second thought, this song could be loosely construed as being about abortion, but there're as many lyrics that contradict that idea as there are that support it. Again (inasmuch as Tunde even knows what he's singing about), Crooklyn's right. |
TV on the Radio – Bomb Yourself Lyrics | 13 years ago |
So very wrong, lady. An album doesn't have to cohere to its theme religiously. Even if the theme of the album is that which you say (which itself is debatable), it doesn't mean every single song will conform to that rigid theme. Also, there's not one lyric that supports your theory. Crooklyn has it right here. If it's any consolation, this is certainly the weakest song on the album, so if it didn't fit the theme, that's only another reason it should have been left off. |
Menomena – BOTE Lyrics | 13 years ago |
BOTE = "Back-of-the-envelope"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_of_the_envelope It kind of fits thematically. I thought it was just a stupid mispelling of "Boat" until I saw "INTIL" meant something. |
Menomena – TAOS Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Whoops, meant to put this here: 58 min ago Rated 0 I think the capitalization of TAOS is arbitrary. You look at Menomena's song titles and it's pretty clear this band doesn't give one sh*t about song titles. That's actually the only thing I dislike about them, how they give such great songs such terrible titles. Anyway, a few tiny corrections: I think he says "I still SURVIVE the good cockfight." Also, he says "We've all got our vices, this one's MINES," a reference to the album title, which is the plural form of "mine" and not holes in the ground. And "...set me free FOR I'VE no ability..." Good work on "my luring--tongue!" I couldn't figure that out for the life of me. Definitely "sessions," not "sections." Yeah, it's about a love of casual sex, but also not being very good at it. Just stumbling into casual sex the best way he knows how. A good, honest song for us guys who couldn't utter a pick-up line to save our lives. Unless TAOS means Technology for Autonomous Operational Survivability. http://www.globalsecurity.org/space/systems/taos.htm |
Menomena – Sleeping Beauty Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Is it "step back" or "stand back"? The first time he says it it sounds like "stepped back." Then there's this: "Everyone When everyone’s sleeping through the night When everyone’s sleeping through the night Then I’ll unfold my hands and my hands and When everyone’s… (repeat)" This is just a nonsensical round. Definitely "Keep the smoke in with a towel." I think it's "Make me honest, share the proceeds." I have no idea what "Eye through your C" is supposed to be. Anyone? |
Menomena – Lunchmeat Lyrics | 13 years ago |
"Sirens SANG in monotone." I think they sing "I row back" in the end. There are definitely three syllables there. |
Menomena – BOTE Lyrics | 13 years ago |
"But the worth of a boat'S IN how well it floats." "I was well aware of all the facts / And despite the proof I have now to choose" Maybe "I continue bearing this lack"? That line's really tough. Maybe "And here I sit exposed to the tide, Old Ironsides"? "And when push ALWAYS comes to shove." "I walk outside an put on"? It's not "set off". |
Menomena – Dirty Cartoons Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Tiny thing: "CONSIDER the meaning," not "considers." This song is amazing. My favorite on a stellar album. |

Menomena – Killemall Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Real good work here, guys. Steven Todd, I like your analysis; I think you're absolutely spot on. This is the hardest song to understand on the album, in my opinion (I really like the way the Ramona Falls guy sings, but damn if I can ever understand what he says), so really good work deciphering that chorus. I think it's "It's these stones that were thrown" instead of "It's his stones that we love/loathe." And it's definitely "And NOW time spent awake is just time spent alone." |
Okkervil River – Blue Tulip Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Well this is clearly the stand-out of The Stand-Ins. Thank you smileforthecamera and Appers66 (you're almost certainly correct with your interpretation and it being a "response" to "A Girl in Port," the six-minute triumphal stand-out of THAT album). I also think there's a possible religious double entendre (fully intentional) that deflates the worshipped status of rock stars. ("If he does exist..." etc.) A few corrections: "A little lie" is actually "A ray of light" and "Feelings crackling Through me..." |
