Gillian Welch – I Dream A Highway Lyrics 15 years ago
does this song, in its entirety really having meaning? i mean, its 10 minutes long. isn't is quite possible that its a personal experience that she has, maybe a long road she's been traveling on? it may have references to things within and without, but that doesn't give the entire song meaning. i just really love the verse:
"saw a wheel within a wheel, heard a call within a call." and the phrase "i dream a highway back to you." is so romantic, i could leave it in a love note to my ex-boyfriend.
anyway, i love this song. i still have no idea what it means in its entirety. but i'm ok with that.

Amanda Palmer – Runs in the Family Lyrics 15 years ago
one last comment: the first verse suggests to me the inclination that people in today's society have to try to make "defined illnesses" out of their problems, whatever they may be. as long as there is a scientific word, definition, and pharmaceutical solution for it. . .

why? it makes us humans feel better. cause if it has something to do with genetics (even if its the fear of ants). . . . well, then we can't control it. and we can blame it on someone/thing else. and we can go to the doctor for it.

to me, these lyrics come from the mouth of nearly every contemporary american (not all, i'm unfortunately generalizing here). but alot rely on "ways out" and "scapegoats." blame it on something you CAN'T control, right? i mean, heaven forbid you actually try to do something wholesome and gutwrenching about it. yeah, its hard. life in general. but what are you going to do about it?? "run from it" as amanda says in her lyrics, and blame it on something you can't control (genetics)? to get some pills? so that you can legitimize continuing? keep in mind amanda is a dark hippy.

i also think that this song has reference to pharmaceutical companies and how they design a drug to "fix" anything and everything. just for the moolah. capitalism. . . such an evil evil thing. especially when population size has increased to allow such anonymity and indifference. hey, but we americans kepp on supporting it whole-heartedly.
