John Lennon – Love Lyrics 10 years ago
I actually think John is referencing the philosophy of Subjective Idealism in the sense that the only thing that can be really real in life is love. Subjective Idealism refers to the idea that only minds and mental contents exist. There is no truth, only perception essentially. Many Buddhist philosophies center around this concept, and John referenced many Buddhist ideologies in his music.

Love is the only thing that is real. I think this is an incredibly beautiful notion and I love this song so much.

Death Cab for Cutie – You Are a Tourist Lyrics 12 years ago
"And if you feel just like a tourist in the city you were born
Then it's time to go
And define your destination
There's so many different places to call home
Because when you find yourself the villain in the story you have written
It's plain to see
That sometimes the best intentions are in need of redemptions"

re·demp·tion   [ri-demp-shuhn] Show IPA
noun
3.
Theology . deliverance from sin; salvation.

I think this is about growing up in a place that you feel disconnected from. When you're a tourist in a new city, you are unfamiliar, you don't feel at home.

I think he talks about what can happen to a person when he or she grows up in an environment that they haven't felt comfortable with. As a result, there can be a sense of anger in your heart.

When you continue to surround yourself with these people, you will always feel like the bad one, or the outcast (the villain in the story you have written.)

Sometimes when people do wrong by you, even when you're a good peson (best of intentions) you can do bad things because you feel so badly inside. These wrongs can be redeemed! Define your destination, find a new place to call home. When you surround yourself with others like you, you will realize that you are a good person with good intentions to start. Let the fire within your heart burn strongly enough for you to make a change!

Feist – I Feel It All Lyrics 12 years ago
I feel it all I feel it all
I feel it all I feel it all
The wings are wide the wings are wide
Wild card inside wild card inside

This song gives me the chills. She begins the song by saying how deeply she experiences her feelings towards her previous relationship. She says the wings are wide as in she is ready to fly, and there is a wild card inside because it could go one way or the other.

If she keeps letting herself remain in this relationship when she knows that it is toxic, she is going to break her own heart. She says she knows more than she knew before, meaning that she knows too much about the relationship and that it is not healthy.

She always goes back on what she knows in her heart to be true. She tries to deny that she doesn't know what she knows, that the relationship is doomed. They go back into a honeymoon period where they don't fight for a while and he doesn't treat her poorly hence the "I love you more! No I love YOU more."

She acknowledges the fact that she has to be strong and leave him. She uses the metaphor of putting her wait against the door holding up an entire gulf, and the loudness of a kick drum on the basement floor. She compares her love for him like a winter bird, she had been so strong and withstood so much and now it is starting to take a serious toll on her.

The whole song is pretty much her way of saying that she can't un-know what she already knows although sometimes she wants to. If she stays, she is staying with the knowledge that it is toxic and there will be no one to blame but herself when it inevitably falls apart.

Maria Mena – He's Hurting Me Lyrics 12 years ago
"First of all thank you for your list of songs related to abuse. I've recently left an abusive marriage and listening to music that's empowering or at least understanding to it has really helped. Just wanted to send you a suggestion of an album related to abuse that's significantly helped me (didn't see it anywhere on your lists). Specifically, a song called He's Hurting Me done by Maria Mena from her Apparently Unaffected album. The whole album appears to reflect her own struggle with a troubled (and likely abusive) relationship."

Regina Spektor – Samson Lyrics 12 years ago
According to Wikepedia: "Academics have interpreted Samson as a demi-god (such as Hercules or Enkidu) enfolded into Jewish religious lore, or as an archetypical folklore hero, among others."

I think she is describing a relationship with a guy that she has made into a God in her own mind. Her relationship has consumed her for so long she feels like they could be an all mighty important couple like Samson and Delilah.

When they first met he was young and attractive and then they grow older and bald and he really isnt the "God" she had imagined him to be.

When she says "beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth" she is referring to the fact that in her heart she knows the reality of their tragic romance.. and that is that he is NOT a God.. that their relationship was nothing important in the scheme of history: "And history books forgot about us and the Bible didn't mention us, the Bible didn't mention us, not even once."

But despite knowing this truth.. that many have loved like this before and will love like this again.. it is important to her because she loved him before she loved anybody else and in that sense he will always have a special meaning to HER. He will always be a God in her eyes no matter what he is.. he's her "sweetest downfall."

This metaphor is all I hear when I listen to this song. I'm so glad you got out of an unhealthy situation, and by the time I have read this I'm pretty sure your son has been born. CONGRATULATIONS! It's the beginning of a whole new life, you pulled the trigger :)

Rihanna – Man Down Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this is about breaking up with someone or wronging somebody. When you really think about how badly you hurt someone sometimes it can be hard to "even sleep at night or "get it out of your mind."

The person you hurt may mean a lot to somebody else: "coulda been somebody's son."

Sometimes when you're so wrapped up in yourself or you've been hurt the way Rihanna has.. you can be careless with others hearts without even realizing it.

The Weepies – Gotta Have You Lyrics 13 years ago
Gray, quiet and tired and mean
Picking at a worried seam

Here she's describing herself and how this person has made her feel. Yucky, quiet and mean.. with him always on her mind.

I try to make you mad at me over the phone
Red eyes and fire and signs
Im taken by a nursery rhyme
I want to make a ray of sunshine and never leave home

She tries to make him mad at her so she can feel something from him. Red eyes from crying, fire represents emotion, and all the signs he has exhibited. She wants to curl up in a ball in her bed.

No amount of coffee, no amount of crying
No amount of whiskey, no amount of wine
No, nothing else will do
I've gotta have you, I've gotta have you

No matter how much coffee she drinks, how much she cries, or how much alcohol she consumes nothing is making the pain go away.. she just wants to be with him.

The road gets cold
Theres no spring in the middle this year
Im the new chicken clucking open hearts and ears
Oh, such a prima donna, sorry for myself
But green, it is also summer
And I wont be warm till Im lying in your arms

She talks about the weather changing and becoming nice outside, but she can't even notice because all shes thinking about is her lost love. She recognizes the fact that she's being dramatic but can't help it.

I see it all through a telescope:
Guitar, suitcase, and a warm coat
Lying in the back of the blue boat
Humming a tune...

I think this is describing a scene the 2 of them shared.. and seeing it through a telescope means she can only see part of the picture.. not the whole thing

The Spill Canvas – Himerus And Eros Lyrics 13 years ago
himerus is the Greek God of Lust.. and Eros is the God of love. Thats why it's called Himerus and Eros. At this point he's not sure if she really loves him the way he loves her. They fight all of the time: "I hate you, no I hate you more." And he's "hoping to God" that he means a little more to him than just sex.

He aknowledges the fact that she has confused him on purpose and that she's sending him a lot of mixed signals. Despite knowing this, despite knowing that she is the person with the potential to hurt him, he still romanticizes everything she does and for some crazy reason he's hoping he ends up with her.

We've all been there..

The Bravery – Hatefuck Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is DEFINITELY not about rape. This song is about being so angry at somebody for what they've done to you, yet also having an amazing sexual attraction to them. It's about a raw need to just fuck somebody. You know when you have make-up sex and it's super angry and animalistic? Thats what this is except to a higher degree.

I think this person is writing about being the Dominator in an S&M relationship. In the music video there are a lot of references towards fertility. It's about hating someone so much but still having an animalistic need to want to conquer them. It's about love and anger and passion.

I always respect musicians and authors with the courage to write to free and with raw honesty. AWESOME song.

Sara Bareilles – Between the Lines Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is about a relationship where neither person ever says how they truly feel. Everything that goes on between them is unspoken, as if they both know but refuse to be the first person to say it. She knows that they have been drifting apart, and when he finally admits that he has been cheating on her she's not surprised because her heart knew the truth all along. She describes herself as being "queen of attention to details" meaning she saw his behavior changing but defended his intentions each time she let her mind think about it. It's kind of a "even though I know, I don't wanna know" type thing. She knows he's checked out mentally and yet she still wants to stay with him. She analyzes all of his behavior and makes herself feel better about what she knows he's doing when in her HEART she knows that it's over, she doesn't need to hear him say it.

John Mayer – Walk on the Ocean (Toad the Wet Sprocket cover) Lyrics 14 years ago
We spotted the ocean at the head of the trail
Where are we going, so far away
and somebody told me that this is the place
Where everything's better, everything's safe

I feel like hes walking the beach with someone he has a relationship with. The ocean is a place of peace relaxation and happiness. The relationship is coming to an end.

Walk on the ocean
Step on the stones
Flesh becomes water
Wood becomes bone

He talks about becoming one with the beach and the universe.

And half and hour later we packed up our things
We said we'd send letters and all those little things
and they knew we were lying but they smiled just the same
It seemed they'd already forgotten we'd came

He recognizes that everything that was said on the beach wasn't true. They promised they'd keep in touch but both parties knew it wasn't real. And he feels so peaceful because he recognizes that in the scheme of life, standing up against the endless ocean that it just doesn't matter. They are just two people in a huge universe.

Now we're back at the homestead
Where the air makes you choke
and people don't know you
and trust is a joke
We don't even have pictures
Just memories to hold
That grow sweeter each season
As we slowly grow old

When he leaves the beach he comes back to reality. People don't trust each other and they make judgments about your life. He talks about how time heals everything and memories grow sweeter the more time has passed.

beautiful beautiful song.

Marie Digby – Beauty in Walking Away Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this is about walking away from somebody or something who has held you captive for a long period of time.

"A light shines off
In the distance
A pale flickering glow
How many times
Do I have to dream
That I could be there
The time is here
And she won't be
Waiting for me
To find the easy way out
I've lost count of the days
That were wasted"

The light off in the distance represents happiness and freedom.. and how often she longed to achieve it. She knows she needs to stop looking at the "days that were wasted" and focus on the future.

"I float on the streets
That are empty
Take the path
That the wind only knows
Tonight is the last time
That I'll ever be here"

She knows that the road to happiness won't be easy.. no one knows what the future holds and thats scary. But this is the last time that she is going to remain captive.

"It's never quite simple
It's never that safe
It never seems perfect
Until it's too late
It's never the right time
To find a new way"

Again she knows that the road to freedom is not going to be easy. Its unpredictable. Even though she has been unhappy for so long at least she knew that it was safe and that it woudl always be the same. Its never going to be a good time to be brave and "walk away"

"There's an answer
In the sound of a train
There is wisdom
Past the bridge on the bay
There's a lifetime
Through the fog
In the rain
There's a beauty
In walking away "

She knows that something great waits for her. The train and the bridge represent the road she has ahead and the great things that lie beyond the road. Through the fog and the rain again represent hard times to come but she knows that moving on with her life holds beautiful things. "there is beauty in walking away."

Rihanna – Russian Roulette Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this is about the ending of a relationship in a big way. In terms of making that final step to give the person you love what they deserve after the way he or she had been treating you.

At the end of a relationship sometimes you need to sever all ties, weather it be my blocking their number, or writing them a heartfelt letter. Sometimes it's more than that and when there is abuse involved it could really be saying "you know what, I'm going to stand up for whats right and take you to court."

But obviously the ending of that relationship is scary because you still do love the person very much.

"Take a breath, take it deep
Calm yourself, he says to me
If you play, you play for keeps
Take a gun, and count to three
I'm sweating now, moving slow
No time to think, my turn to go"

If you play, you play for keeps (If you really do this, it is going to be all over forever)

And you can see my heart beating
You can see it through my chest
And I'm terrified but I'm not leaving
Know that I must must pass this test
So just pull the trigger

(She is so scared but she is goign to finally stand up for herself and 'pass this test' because she knows she deserves it)

And then I get a scary thought
That he's here means he's never lost

(In the past he has never lost. He has treated her like crap and he has always won. So she gets scared before pulling the trigger wondering if she tries to take this step if she will fail and that is really terrifying)

This song is so emotional and powerful and can me interpreted in many ways. The emotion in her voice is amazing.

Ben Harper – Diamonds on the Inside Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about a girl who keeps hurting herself continually and then wonders why she is never satisfied.

She is always in relationships, and she is never happy and never trusts the guys she is with. She's very scared (when you have everything, you have everything to lose) She would rather be in a relationship with someone that hurts her than be alone. When it says that she made herself a bed of nails.. she knows that the guy isnt going to treat her right but she continues being with him anyways. Ben Harper says "Make sure the fortune that you seek is the fortune that you need." The fortune she seeks is being in relationships.. when what she really needs is to be alone.

Ruth is outwardly a very plain and ordinary girl (her name is ruth.. very plain) but on the inside she is stronger than she knows (Diamonds are very strong.) Diamonds are also beautiful. She has SO much inside that is so beautiful and deserves so much. She needs to be alone and learn that those diamonds are on the inside so that she can finally be with someone that treats her right. She has those diamonds in there.. so she CAN be alone even though she doesn't even realize it.

"Tell me why the first to ask
Is the last to give every time
What you say and do not mean
Follows you close behind"

^I think this part is about Karma. The guys that have been taking taking taking from her and not giving anything in return are going to be the ones that end up alone.

Like the soldier long standing under fire
Any change comes as a relief
Let the giver's name remain unspoken
She is just a generous thief

^ I think this implies that Ruth is so ready to trust anybody that comes along. She has been hurting for so long that anytime a new person comes into her life whether it be a friend or lover she is ready to trust and fall into a relationship with them because any change is a relief. And these people that come along and "save her" really aren't saving her at all.. a thief isn't really generous.. they are secretly really taking from her while outwardly acting like they care. Also.. at the beginning of the song he mentions that Ruth is a terrible liar.. which implies that she is a good person because she really doesn't like to lie. When one is a good person they believe others to be good as well which is probably why she is so trusting.

Jason Mraz – The Remedy (I Won't Worry) Lyrics 15 years ago
It is apparent that his girlfriend just broke up with him because he makes a reference to the fact that she is now “free” with a little hint of sarcasm when he says “let freedom ring.”

At first he blames himself, feels depressed, and loses faith in God because he feels that no God would put someone through this.

But then he looks on he bright side and realizes that he gained something his ex-girlfrind did not.. and that is EXPERIENE. He gets to be a stronger person and he gets to feel real feelings and live his life while she’s still living protected and “sleeping with the lights on” which implies that she’s very cautious.

And he’s saying that the real tragedy is not her breaking his heart. Its that she’s living scared and she can talk about her philosophies of living so freely with her friends all the time but in the end she’s going to end up alone.

He says “you can turn off the sun but I’m still gonna shine” because he has learned through experience that even in the darkest hours of his life he is going to be okay. He isn’t scared to love again because after having his heart broken he isn’t scared of it breaking again because he’s gone through hell and made it out alright.

sorry i keep posting so much but i keep realizing things as i go.. i think this represents how a person feels after some one they love walks away.. you feel like you HATE THEM for what they did to you.. yet you also want to get on your knees and beg for them back. One part is all tough saying 'i'm finished with you' and the other part is saying 'look in my eyes.. you're KILLING ME.'

At my school they used this song in a modern interpretation of medea. The music was played at a part intended to show her anger at the man that she have given everything for and he just threw her away like she meant nothing.

I love this song because it just makes me want to clench my fists and feel the emotion along with it. It's so powerful.

Live – Lightning Crashes Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song represents the cycle of life. How life just keeps on moving. For example, on the happiest day of the mothers life "this moment she's been waiting for" down the hall there is a family experiencing a death. It represents happiness and sadness and the give and take we all experience in life. Someday the new mother that just had a baby will be the old mother dying, and down the hall from her a new mother will be having a baby.

I also think it's about energy.. how energy just keeps moving.. like when the old mother dies her energy is still on the earth in the form of a new baby -- "the confusion that was hers
belongs now, to the baby down the hall"

and lightning is a form of energy so thats where i came up with that part of the analysis.

This song reminds me of being on the subway. You know, you notice that person in a crowd of people and you can't stop staring at them.. but they happen to be riding with their boyfriend/girlfriend. And the two of you have that connection.. where you just both KNOW you're attracted to eachother..it's all in the eye contact.

"And I don't think
That I'll see her again
But we shared a moment
That will last till the end"

i think everyone has that one person that they can remember having a moment with.. but you'll never see them again because you don't know their name or anything

Jack Johnson – If I Had Eyes Lyrics 15 years ago
When i read the lyrics to this song, i see a relationship where one person is always giving, and the other is extremely insecure and always searching for something more. Jack is saying even up until the very end, when she hurt him SO badly.. he would still compliment her if he could have.

"And if you could have tried to trust the hand that fed
You would have never been hungry"

it sounds like she didn't trust him or believe how much he loved her because she was too insecure and was always seeking affirmation elsewhere.

"Then he says
or is there any difference
Or are we just holding on to things that we don’t have anymore"

That sounds like even after all the time that has past they are still analyzing things that were wrong about the relationship but it's just time to let it go. He also acknowledges the time that has past because he makes reference to the fact that time doesn't heal all wounds.

Then he says: "Again I doubt
I’m going to win you back
When you’ve got eyes like that
That won’t let me in
Always looking out "

Again it sounds like she won't let anybody in. When you think of a person looking out.. he or she is always looking to the future, never able to live in in the moment.. always seeking something more.
