Not sure what Roger's and Hammerstein meant exactly either but Carousel was innovative for its time, being one of the first American musicals to contain a tragic plot (about 10-12 years before West Side Story). The leading man dies but not before you find out that he hits the leading lady....it was played down of course but it was an abusive relationship and back in the 40's all you could really do was stick it out. Sad. So I don't think Amanda was far off in her interpretation (if you watch the video). |

Oh, what a noble, distinguished collection of fine little friends you have made...(superficial friends maybe) Seems like a very sarcastic line to me. I say this because she uses the word "little," and this dimishes the noble and distinguished. Cigarette adds used to show young "yuppy" type professionals, mostly white, partying and having a grand time....thanks to smoking a particular cigarette brand (again superficial). I believe that Amanda may be referring to those adds. Just my thought. I think it would fit into how I see the song at least. I think it is about someone that was superfical and was then shunned by that world and is now discovering how human they are and that they choose to stay closed up now so as to aviod the pain of rejection. That has maybe chosen superficial friends in the past and now hates the thought of those people (in the cig. adds) and they have hurt her because she didn't realize to only give them superfical feelings as well and they had too much power to hurt her: Hitting the tables without you again: "No, we'll wait, no, we promise, we'll wait" (shows insecurity that the person they are talking to is afraid to be left) and And you're learning that just 'cause they call themselves friends Doesn't meant they'll call ------------------------------- Almost human afterall: superficial people seem to be fake and unreal....Also that labels are just that...labels and not indicative of a whole person. This person is waking up and finding that they are human and they have the needle (power). The pattern's laid out on the bed With dozens of colors of thread But you've got the needle I guess that's the point in the end The above lyric also makes me think of the pattern being your life and you even though there is a certain pattern there are MANY colors and you have the needle (or whom she is talking about)...power to choose that color and even though there is a superfcial pattern you create your own life in the end. The line And just 'cause they call themselves experts It doesn't mean sweet fuck all...labels again. OR that even the experts don't have all the answers. Just some general thoghts....therre are more but I am outta time and with Amanda there is always double, triple meaning and up to your own interpreation but I think drug abuse is too literal. That is jus tme though. |

I have always thought about music executives when listening to this song....and how the industry eats you alive no matter how you try to keep it real. Take a look at yourself....a look that will sell (records). Going upstairs....becoming the next "big" thing. Write a song to keep you company (lonely at the top) There are good things and tonight we're eating meat....Not everything is bad about "selling out" but you do give up parts of yourself (teeth are falling out) and they dottle about with their bellies hanging out...fat cats at the top (executives) Men who feed on human beings....use up people and then throw them away without regard. They hated me (don't understand her) ....Then they ate me (made money) and they thought I was tasty. I could go on but I think that will do. |
