Bruce Springsteen – Jungleland Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Both of those songs were written after 'Jungleland.' |
Dire Straits – Les Boys Lyrics | 11 years ago |
How is it laughing at the gay scene? Isn't it more commenting on it and if anything defending it: "Some tourist takes a photograph, Les boys don't get one laugh, He says they're useless." |
fun. – We Are Young Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Some interesting things here, and glad that people put thought into things, but that video was a fan-made video, and is not the actual official video that the band made for the song. |
Bruce Springsteen – Thunder Road Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Isn't the person who originally disagreed just criticizing also? Aren't you just criticizing? People can disagree...people can argue. Get over yourself. |
Dawes – Moon In The Water Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I typed these up and blocked them exactly how they were in the liner notes, even if that's not exactly how I would have done it. Anyway, without getting too in-depth and just in reference to the title of the song and how that plays into what the lyrics are talking about, the moon in the water is something unattainable. |

Dawes – It's A Little Bit Of Everything Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I don't mean to say that these lyrics are self-explanatory, because it's so pretentious when people say that, because most often, songs aren't self-explanatory in the least, but this song is very straight-forward in saying what it means. It's very anecdotal, and it says what it means without saying what it means. In that way, it's not straight-forward, because it's a simple list of things that when put together, are strong. The man is killing himself because of "the mountains," "the fog," "the death of my first dog." And that's the whole point of the song, and it's title, and that's that it really is a little bit of everything. |
Dawes – Million Dollar Bill Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I got these straight from the liner notes, although there were some clear mistakes in the liner notes, so maybe that's not the best source. Anyway, I think these are accurate, not to mention that there is a lot of beauty in what Taylor is saying with this song. Just a few different verses basically saying "Yeah you left me, but I still really want to be a part of your life" and so he says it in these ridiculous but very poetic ways like "I'm going to fly to the moon so when you look out on it you'll be seeing me." I like it. |

I don't see the humor. |
Train – Save Me, San Francisco Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I actually think it's even more straightforward than you say. I think it's about being away from home - and not liking it. He just wants to go back to where he came from because that's where he belongs, where the girl lives, where he knows. |

Colin Hay – Beautiful World Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Um, no the breakers are white because it's churned up water. |
Josh Ritter – Another New World Lyrics | 14 years ago |
These are the lyrics that are on the final cut of the album: The leading lights of the age all wondered amongst themselves what I would do next After all that I've found in my travels around the world was there anything left? "Gentlemen," I said "I've studied the maps and if what I am thinking is right There's another new world at the top of the world for whoever can break through the ice" I looked round the room in the way I once had and I saw that they wanted belief So I said "all I got are my guts and my God and I paused, and the Annabel Lee" Oh the Annabel Lee, I saw their eyes shine, the most beautiful ship in the sea, My Nina, my Pinta, my Santa Maria, my beautiful Annabel Lee That spring I set sail as a crowd waved from shore and on board the crew waved their hands But I never had family just the Annabel Lee so I didn't have cause to look back I just set the course north, and I studied the charts and towards dark I drifted towards sleep and I dreamed of the fine deep harbor I'd find past the ice for my Annabel Lee After that it got colder the world got quiet it was never quite day or quite night and the sea turned the color of sky turned the color of sea turned the color of ice Till at last around us was vastness, one vast glassy desert of arsenic white and the waves that once lifted us sifted instead into drifts against Annabel's sides And the crew gathered closer at first for comfort But each morning would bring a new set of tracks in the snow leading over the edge of the world till I was the only one left After that it gets cloudy, but it feels like I laid there for days and maybe for months But Annabel held me the two of us happy just to think back on all we had done We talked of the other new worlds we discovered till she gave up her body to me And as I chopped up her main sail for timber I told her of all that we still had to see Then the frost turned her moorings to nine tails and the wind lashed her sides in the cold I burned her to keep me alive every night in the loving embrace of her hold And I won't call it rescue what brought me back to the old world to drink and decline And pretend that the search for another new world was well worth the burning of mine Sometimes at night in my dreams comes the singing of some unknown tropical bird and I smile in my sleep thinking Annabel Lee had made it to Another New World Yeah sometimes at night in my dreams comes the singing of some unknown tropical  bird And I smile in my sleep thinking Annabel Lee has made it to Another New World |
State Radio – Right Me Up Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I'd guess the jub-jub is a reference to Lewis Carrol's book Through the Looking Glass. |

Third Eye Blind – Blinded (When I See You) Lyrics | 14 years ago |

What I was thinking is that he doesn't do anything because he is a child, and the couple is his parents. |
Train – Meet Virginia Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think that its like, maybe a depression hotline or something. Maybe even one of those phone setup things and he always calls her, so he doesn't really know her but they have long intimate phone calls where she tells him a lot about herself, and in reality he "can't wait to meet Virginia." |
Train – Marry Me Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The first time I listened to it I didn't listen to closely. Then I had it on as background noise, and I heard the line "If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe" and it caught me off guard. Its like an infatuation with someone before you even really know them, and you are already dreaming of a life with them. |
Pat Monahan – Pirate on the Run Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Fantastic song, and I'm so glad he decided to make it a duet. The meaning is simple (I think); A gypsy, and a pirate on the run. They love each other but he's always got to go. Maybe it's like being on tour, and never staying in one place for your 'gypsy'. I originally thought that they were saying 'In reality, nature let you never be mine' but now I can hear what they are saying. |
Matt Nathanson – Wings Lyrics | 14 years ago |
On the album version at the very end he says, "I'm gone, say nice things about me, I'm gone" Which, well isn't here, but is also a line from James Taylor's "Carolina on my Mind" and I was wondering if anyone thinks that that is some sort of reference or just a coincidence. |
John Mayer – Who Says Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Damn I was just about to say the exact same thing about Cat Stevens. "If you want to be free, be free" "Who say's I can't be free?" |
John Mayer – Who Says Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It's 22. Not 20, too. |
John Mayer – Perfectly Lonely Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think that this is the best song on Battle Studies. "A simple little kind of free." "And this is not to say there never comes a day I'll take my chances and start again And when I look behind on all my younger times I'll have to thank the wrongs that led me to a love so strong" He's happy to be single, it's a nice change of pace and he knows that some day he'll settle down, and when that comes he'll be grateful of all the mistakes that led him there. |
John Mayer – War of My Life Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Wow thank you ruserious. I agree though. I feel like the lyrics are very simple, but also very strong. I think that the hammer stanza and the pocket stanza are the best in the song. "If fear hasn't killed me yet/Nothing will." |

Dishwalla – Counting Blue Cars Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This is a great song but I'd like to point something out... "Ask questions, like children often do- Tell me all your thoughts on God?" That is not a question. Its a statement. Tell me all your thoughts. |
Josh Ritter – Bandits Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I have this song from the live ep, but is it a cover or no? |
Josh Ritter – Kathleen Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Maybe All Of That Happened, But Why Capital Letters For Every Single Word? |
Josh Ritter – Kathleen Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think you are absolutely right. My friends and I argue about this a lot. They think that he has sex with her... but I say that Josh is the guy driving her home, they guy who sees through her, basically the good guy. He sees her troubles, knows not to take advantage of a girl etc. Would that kind of guy have sex with her? I think absolutely not. |
Josh Ritter – Naked as a Window Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Such a cool comparison. A window is about as naked as it gets... whether its wide open or its closed, you can always see right through it. |
Josh Ritter – Another New World Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Yeah I heard it live and made the connection immediately. In Poe's poem, Annabel dies and Poe says that "nothing can ever dissever my soul from the soul of the beautiful Annabel Lee," just as the boat in the song dies, although at the hands of the narrator, and he says that he still dreams about her and everything. Very cool song, can't wait for this album. |
Josh Ritter – Girl In The War Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Peter said to Paul "All those words that we wrote Are just the rules of the game and the rules are the first to go" But now talkin' to God is Laurel beggin' Hardy for a gun I gotta girl in the war, man I wonder what it is we done Because of Peter's primacy over the church after Jesus, Peter is often recognized as the gatekeeper to Heaven. It's like he is the judge of everyone and he decides who's in and who's not, so the rules for living that he and Paul wrote would be the Bible and as it turns out no one is modeling their behavior. When he talks to the big man its like confirmed through the Laurel and Hardy line that yeah, everyone is messed up. A girl in a war is something that is not supposed to happen, you know? So the phrase kind of means something immoral, something that shouldn't be. The girl is innocent. Peter's trying to figure out how we got to this point. Paul said to Petey "You gotta rock yourself a little harder; Pretend the dove from above is a dragon and your feet are on fire" And I got a girl in the war, Paul the only thing I know to do Is turn up the music and pray that she makes it through While Peter was the first Pope and basically the leader of Christianity, Paul did probably more for the religion in total in kind of an everyman's way. Peter's sitting on his throne in the vatican while Paul's out traveling and preaching and such. Also, Jesus declared Peter the rock of the church, the foundation with which he would build the church on. But Paul got shit done. So, in this verse Paul is telling Peter to be a stronger foundation and do something about this girl in the war problem they got going on. Obviously, a dove is a symbol for peace, so pretend what looks good isn't, and try to make a difference. But Pete responds with "the only thing I know to do is turn up the music" and act like theirs nothing wrong, and "pray that she makes it through." which is kind of ironic because, who is he praying to? That's answered in the next verse, Because the keys to the kingdom got locked inside the kingdom And the angels fly around in there, but we can't see them And I gotta girl in the war, Paul I know that they can hear me yell If they can't find a way to help, they can go to Hell If they can't find a way to help her, they can go to Hell Now the keys to Heaven (the right way to live) is totally lost, except for those inside know. I think the angels line could be Josh saying we can't see them, they're not even there, because really, has anyone ever lived up to exactly what God wants? But it most likely means we can't seem them so we can't emulate them, therefore can't get in. They can't hear his prayers from the last verse because they aren't listening. And now he's not praying he's yelling and still no one is listening. Obviously the next line is strong because Peter is saying those in Heaven can help, but they choose not to, and so they don't deserve to be in there. Those who know of the world's problems, especially the church, but don't do anything about it don't deserve their high seat, because they are as much at fault as anyone. Ritter uses Peter and Paul to tell the world, "everything is real fucked up and no one's doing anything about it." Especially the church. He calls the religion's leaders hypocrites for not practicing what they preach. Paul to Petey "you gotta rock yourself a little harder; Pretend the dove from above is a dragon and your feet are on fire" But I gotta girl in the war, Paul her eyes are like champagne They sparkle, bubble over, in the morning all you got is rain Sparkle, bubble over, in the morning all you got is rain They sparkle, bubble over, in the morning all you got is rain Her eyes are like champagne, she's crying beauty. But soon her eyes sparkle and go flat and she dies. Because once the champagne goes bad it might as well be rainwater. So the girl dies on account of the war, society is lost to evil. The world is lost to righteous living. |
Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Or at least I thought that. And then I thought about it again and damn I can't believe I missed that. I just always thought it was nodes and then I read this and I was like, No's?? What?? but its a vacancy sign. No vacancy. I'm dumb, basically |
Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I don't know if anyone said this and I don't even know if its right but I feel like the line if definitely "illuminate the nodes on the vacancy sign," not the no's |
Bob Dylan – Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I've read all these comments and I'm trying to figure out the best combination of answers in my own head. I just have a question to add... When it says she's looking like a queen without a crown Is Dylan saying she's beautiful, because she's like a queen, only she's not so no crown, or is he saying that she's like a queen that has lost her crown, so she's looking confused because a queen if nothing without her crown. I feel like he could be saying she's very good-looking, she's powerless, or she's confused. And all three are very different |
Counting Crows – When I Dream of Michelangelo Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It's about reaching for something divine, trying to do something extraordinary in art, and that the messed up thing about that wasn't that you couldn't do it, it was that you spent all your time trying to and you forgot about the human beings around you, and you kind of lose your humanity, and that's what this songs really about. That's what Adam said in the live version from Soho. Just thought I'd add that. |
Parachute – She Is Love Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Excellent song. Its such an odd phrase to express his love-they call her love, but its so cool. The singing during the chorus is epecially good. And that's really what its all about, just expressing his love for a girl even though they've had problems. |
