Sunset Rubdown – You Go On Ahead (Trumpet, Trumpet II) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The song is simple. It's about hanging back and letting someone else take the lead for a while: * I'd like to watch the white flash of your heels as they take turns breaking the desert heat, to beckon me in languages I've never learned * I'd like to have you navigate to hills where no musicians live, and on the way decide what 'bendings' of your will you're willing to forgive * I'd like to throw this trumpet down and go on empty handed * I wondered whether or not that shit was empty * So wait, you've got to wait... you've got to wait for me. * if there are two eyes in my head, there are four seasons in a year, and reflections on the water of a burning yellow sphere. And the days add up to weeks, add up to months, and add up, and add up... to years. So hold on a sec, and let me rest for a little while. |
Sunset Rubdown – They Took a Vote and Said No Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Exactly, except the men with power don't "choose to do nothing." They choose to sacrifice the boy's eyes for the(ir) greater good. |
fun. – We Are Young Lyrics | 12 years ago |
The guy who said DUI nailed it (or drunk-driving accident). It's all about having someone you can trust to take you home at the end of the night, and how you establish that trust after breaking it. |

"flares all their lights at me" has already been copied a few other places, lol. |
Pomegranates – This Land used to be my Land, But Now I Hate Th... Lyrics | 12 years ago |
"and this place reveres all its lights and beeps"? i think "lights" is right, but it's a tough one. "and this place reveals all its lights at me (and beeps)"? |
jj – New Work Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Mashup of two songs from Swedish band Broder Daniel (Work and We Were Winning) with Empire State of Mind (Hunte/Sewell-Ulepic). I agree. Fantastic. |
Mumford & Sons – The Cave Lyrics | 13 years ago |
"This song captures the essence of what it feels like coming out of drug addiction" Seconding/thirding. The "tie me to a post and block my ears" Odyssey reference also alludes to the lotus eaters, etc. and the Sirens were a drug in and of themselves. "The harvest left no food for you to eat" Cold turkey. |
Harlem Shakes – Strictly Game Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i must concur. sorry, fixed it. |

Turn my power *OFF* Most definitely. |
The Mountain Goats – My Favorite Things Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Champagne bubbled up through the *neck* of the bottle, And sweet *sounds* came out through the radio. Looks like these lyrics got nicked from here: http://www.themountaingoats.net/lyrics/extras_lyr.html |
Archers of Loaf – Telepathic Traffic Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It's hilarious to see how many sites rip off this one (if this is the original, which I'm now doubting ...) Every version of these lyrics online includes the blanks in "On the ____" - lol. I'm gonna hazard a guess it's "On the beltway"? It's sounds like [something]-way, and it sounds like it starts with B. Beltway is the only word I can think of that makes half sense. And half sense seems about right with AoL. "On a short part / Of the long march home" is wrong. It's hard to tell what's right, but the last word there is "lost" (or something else that ends with "_ost" or "_ossed") not "home." There's no "_ome" sound. And the "part" in the first line actually sounds like it ends in "_ark" like "park." It sounds like "On a short park / Of a long parks lost" which makes zero sense, but there you go. "Cause you're sure / But it doesn't strike a cord" should be "If you're sure / but it doesn't strike a chord" LOVE THIS SONG. |
The Waitresses – Chrismas Wrapping Lyrics | 13 years ago |
There's a typo in the song title (Chrismas Wrapping) and it won't show in search results for "Christmas Wrapping" |
Mates of State – Goods (All in Your Head) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Hm. To me it sounds like it's about giving up your artistic dream to get a job that pays the rent and covers the goods, i.e. "selling out." |
The Thermals – Power Doesn't Run On Nothing Lyrics | 14 years ago |
yeah we're, more equal, we'll move you people, off the planet cause GODDAMN we need the fuel |
Built to Spill – In The Morning Lyrics | 14 years ago |
yeah, sounds like a song about addiction -- "When my mind's uncertain my body decides / What it will do to get through the hell of the night" "in the morning" is when it starts all over again. sober, but not for long. |
A.C. Newman – The Heartbreak Rides Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think it's about a failing relationship, and the attempt to save it by staying on the move. My question is what's he saying in the "chorus?" It sounds like "yellow." |
Mates of State – Parachutes (Funeral Song) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
gets me every time ... heartbreakingly wonderful. |
The Mountain Goats – 1 John 4:16 Lyrics | 14 years ago |
hm. "In the holding tank I built for myself ..." if the narrator is a prisoner, it's a self-imposed sentence. like half his songs, i have to think this is about addiction. the narrator is in rehab, last in line for his pills. the "you" seems to be an actual person, not god/love. |
Sunset Rubdown – The Mending of the Gown Lyrics | 14 years ago |
well, i guess the paddle goes up and the paddle goes down. ;) and yeah, "the shit in your nose" is "the shitty mirage" also, i think "she wrapped herself in swallowing" should be "she wrapped herself in SWADDLING" ... ? and i think Sam is the one screwing over Maggie. |
Talking Heads – Road To Nowhere Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The real "road to nowhere" is the domination and destruction of the planet by our species. I realize the video is not the song, but the video makes it obvious. Picture a globe dripping with blood. The plebes/proles endure a Sisyphean slog through life, straining towards some goal on the horizon that never materializes. Misery loves company, and all of us on the road to nowhere invite others to join us, and we assimilate them into our pointless, miserable journey that ends in death and nothingness. There are two voices in this song, almost doppelgangers. One at the beginning and end, the voice of the narrator, and another in the middle, the voice of those on the road to nowhere, those who believe that "We're on the road to paradise." The narrator takes the skeptical, outsider approach of one who has the wisdom to see the folly of pursuit. The other voice takes the role of the traveler on the road. The narrator is part and apart of the travelers's journey on the road to nowhere. He can envision a different path, or a non-path, a movement off the road: "There's a city in my mind, come along and take that ride." He is one of them and not at the same time. He longs not to be part of this world and its unquenchable desires, but realizes he is also human and part of the collective insanity. Bilocational shamanism. That's what the song is really about. And Zen Buddhism. |
Ween – Reggaejunkiejew Lyrics | 15 years ago |
seanween ftw. direct source. |
Mates of State – The Kissaway Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Does anyone else think this song is about sex? All of it. And Mr. Bet is a cat? (I always thought it was "Sure you can, missed your bets, on the prowl again ..." ) |
Mates of State – Middle Is Gold Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think there's a lot in the lyrics here. Not gibberish at all. I sense something about raising children ("catch them while you can") and finding the "middle way" in some sort of Buddhist sense. "It's always the same, by and by" yet you never cross same river twice... etc. Interesting song. |
The Deep Dark Woods – All The Money I Had Is Gone Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It seems pretty clear that he once *had* some money, yet now it is gone. And it pains him sorely. I think "green hands" is "greedy hands" and "Deliver" is "That live" All the greedy hands That live around this land... |
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Satan Said Dance Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The only ambiguity in the song seems to lie here: "Red right hand as the alligator kiss" I also get the sense that it's the promise of a job, promotion, or any goal, etc. being a product of the devil. And that the work for it never ends. The only way you can stop dancing is to stop playing. How zen. |
Two Gallants – Despite What You've Been Told Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think it's a great song, but the lyrics come off a little misogynistic. It seems like he's had a fight with his wife or girlfriend and about to have sex with another woman. At first I thought he was with a prostitute, but the line "you’re just my next mistake / Like me to you" indicates that he's a mistake for her too. In that case, though, the condemnation "God forgive your unborn sons" seems even harsher. "I hate to speak so free / But you mean nothing to me." |
Mates of State – Everyone Needs an Editor Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I met my wife while listening to My Solo Project constantly, and this song was on the first mixtape (yes, an actual tape) I ever made her. For me, it's all about how we all think we're right, we all think we know what's best for us. But when you meet someone who makes you feel for more than yourself, "us" becomes something else. In other words, 2 > 1 + 1 and 2 < 1 + 1 at the same time. |
Modest Mouse – Black Cadillacs Lyrics | 16 years ago |
These guys opened with this song at the Greek Theatre in Berkely on May 31, 2008. It was a pretty unremarkable performance, but great fucking opening song. "But we were all still just dumb, dumb, dumber Than the dirt, dirt, dirt on the ground" Amen, Isaac. |
INXS – I Send A Message Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Take away the pain and drink the wine. RIP, Michael. |
The National – Secret Meeting Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Didn't anybody, didn't anybody tell you? Didn't anybody tell you how to gracefully disappear in a room? Wonderful. From several live versions, "I'm talking ace" and "You're talking ace" seem to be it (or "Don't talking ace.") |
Placebo – Summer's Gone Lyrics | 16 years ago |
If you sing when you're high And you're dry as a bone Then you must realise That you're never alone And you'll sing with the dead instead Powerful stuff. It speaks to the unity of the universe, I think, i.e. a transcendental experience when one realizes there's no such thing as extinction or death, just as there's no such thing as you and me. |
Sleater-Kinney – I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Uh yeah, what mockingsmile said. She wants to be the hot lead singer. Especially for you. And you, and you... |
Pavement – Harness Your Hopes Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Wonderful song, and fun lyrics. A word that rhymes with Pavement is enslavement--perhaps it's a wail against the constraints of monogamy. |
The National – City Middle Lyrics | 16 years ago |
> What does it mean to "go gator?" Most of the "gator" references I know of are drug-related as well - weed or cocaine. I took it to mean do coke and have sex. I love the "I have weird memories" lines. |
The National – Start a War Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I agree, the song seems to be about a couple splitting up. The war, I think, is be the custody battle for the kid/s. "do you really think you can just put it in a safe behind a painting, lock it up and leave" I thought that referred to an engagement/wedding ring, rather than a will, i.e. turning away and leaving the marriage/relationship as if it never happened. As if taking off the ring signified the end of their relationship, rather than the beginning of a new phase, the "war." All around, great, minimal lyrics that convey the ineffability of such intense emotional moments. The words wouldn't paint the stark picture without the bass and amazing drums. "you were always weird but I never had to hold you by the edges like I do now" I love that line. |
