The Avett Brothers – The Weight of Lies Lyrics 14 years ago
I think he is talking about faith and Jesus' teaching. In school and church you hear about Jesus' preaching to the hungry crowds. When he was young he didn't buy into all those stories and their lessons but now sees value into what was being taught.

David Ford – Panic (Dirt & Matchwood) Lyrics 14 years ago
Song is fantastic - and while I like the studio version of it. No clue what the song is REALLY about, but when I heard it, I sort of saw it like this...
The song as a knock at commercialism and our modern dependence on the "extras" in life. David sees that he is become too enthralled with superficial things and has is trying to swear them off. But he is a product of a different generation who has grown accustomed to these types of things and it isn't easy giving it up.
Ultimately he recognizes (just like most people) that we are hurting ourselves and the Earth, but we still seem to act inspite of this knowledge.
OR
The world's intollerance to each other and their inability to curb their anger and wage war. David has been guilty of this too (personally speaking) and sees that it isn't easy, but what is happening on the larger scale seems to defy his logic and that there is little that anyone seems to be doing or can do at this point.

A lot of WWII imagery here...
A lot of artwork was hidden from the Nazi's during the 2nd world war. They were burning down building in their path, destroying history and culture from many different nations.
It was 15 years ago i first heard this song, it wasn't until i logged on here i ever doubted the "down at the beach..." line as NOT being Normandy. The water litteraly ran red there was so much blood in it.
I like the salesman idea. Maybe Hitler is a person selling fear?

The Airborne Toxic Event – Gasoline Lyrics 15 years ago
Not just any young love, but THE young love.
This song is about nostalgia and how no girl has ever compared to the girl he was with when he was 17. However, that relationship ended when he was 21 and he has never really moved on. Girls come and go, but the memory of "her" stays with him. Ultimately he regrets not holding on or doing more to keep her.

Fink – This Is The Thing Lyrics 15 years ago
Lyrics are briliant.
The person has been sleeping with the same girl for awhile, but there is a glitch that keeps them from being more. He is tired of it so he quits coming around thinking it will spark her to come after him. And she never comes, a "season" has changed - but still nothing. Perhaps it is his pride that keeps him from calling her and in turn what has kept him alone?

The Format – Snails Lyrics 15 years ago
The second part seems to be describing the birth of a child, umm maybe. Like his mother is overprotective about the child and while they may not be wealthy the day the child was born felt like winning the lottery.
Clearly there was a death following that, not sure who's though.

Matt Costa – These Arms Lyrics 15 years ago
anna is on the right track.

This is a break up song. He has been out at sea (the relationship) for awhile, and its stormy. Her eyes are no longer filled with love, but are cold. So he has turned the boat around and is heading back to where they started, as nothing - not together. He doesn't want it to end, he wants her to be that person she was, to find her way back to him, but if she can't then he has to end things. This is their breakup day unless she finds her way back to his arms.
That is my take anyway...

The Tragically Hip – World Container Lyrics 16 years ago
I see this as an Anti Bush/Anti-Iraq war song. I think he is making a connection between Himmler and Bush, Bush is "laughing" at the dead, he doesn't care how many US soldiers it takes. Godie say's he is in "Awe" of "Y'all", i think that is a reference to the States. The war is a flaw in [world] progress, but the only song American's are singing is "Don't Forget", the phrase refering to 9/11/01.
