Blur – Song 2 Lyrics 10 years ago
Evidently I was wrong. I thought the first verse was:

I got my head shaved
by H.M. Boche
it wasn't easy
nothing is...

where Boche is pronounced Bo-chay. Why I don't know maybe I was thinking Hieronymus Bosch - who knows, I was wrong... If he had his head shaved by Hieronymus Bosch that wouldn't be easy at all.

X – See How We Are Lyrics 11 years ago
The line at "Ah Homeboy... Isn't that a Mexican name?"

sounds to me like "Hey girl, I wouldn't trust you as far as I could throw you."

Misheard lyrics:

You toss a salad like a pile of leaves
I'm going to find me some better weeds.

Billy Bragg – St. Swithin's Day Lyrics 11 years ago
The politics of love. One of Billy's most beautiful songs.
While he could be talking about old Maggie Thatcher (I certainly hope that he doesn't abuse himself to her memory) it seems he's talking about a relationship with a woman who doesn't understand him or see his point of view.

"And the fact that you don't understand
Casts a shadow over this land
But the sun still shines from behind it"

The singer/main character is sad about the cloud of their bad/failed relationship but knows the sun will come out again when he gets over it.

Billy Bragg – From A Vauxhall Velox Lyrics 11 years ago
Vauxhall - is an inner city area of Central London, and home to an ever-increasing number of gay bars and nightclubs. Hence Morrissey's "Vauxhall and I" album title.

Velox - 1) An individual who's ability to bitch, whine and/or complain surpasses any others ability. 2)To find the most insignificant flaws in anything and cry foul.

Annie Lennox – No More 'I Love Yous' Lyrics 11 years ago
I am really sorry that so many people have jumped to assumption that this song is about an abused child. It really isn't.

Haven't any of you really loved someone who either wouldn't acknowledge you or you were too shy to approach? Then when you approach or try to approach you find that the love is unrequited... See Billy Bragg's brilliant "The Saturday Boy". The miserable pain of love and learning that you'll never share love with that person. Seriously, I guess it might be "self abuse", but that's all.

The Saturday Boy Lyrics

I’ll never forget the first day I met her
That september morning was clear and fresh
The way she spoke and laughed at my jokes
And the way she rubbed herself
Against the edge of my desk
She became a magic mystery to me
And we’d sit together in double
History twice a week
And some days we’d walk the same way home
And it’s surprising how quick
A little rain can clear the streets
We dreamed of her and compared our dreams
But that was all that I ever tasted
She lied to me with her body you see
I lied to myself ’bout the chances I’d wasted

The times we were close
Were far and few between
In the darkness at the dances in the school canteen
Did she close her eyes like I did
As we held each other tight
And la la la la la la la la means I love you

She danced with me and I still hold that memory
Soft and sweet
And I stare up at her window
As I walk down her street
But I never made the first team,
I just made the first team laugh
And she never came to the phone
She was always in the bath
I had to look in the dictionary
To find out the meaning of unrequited
While she was giving herself for free
At a party to which I was never invited

I never understood my failings then
And I hide my humble hopes now
Thinking back she made us want her
A girl not old enough to shave her legs

Nick Lowe – I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass Lyrics 12 years ago
This is a really good song by Nick Lowe, but I feel that it owes much more to David Bowie. To me, it is a combination of the song "Broken Glass" and "Sound And Vision". The syncopated bass with that ringing vibrato guitar really seems to be the origin of this song. As far as meaning goes, for me the "sound of breaking glass" is somewhat scary.

Iron & Wine – Boy with a Coin Lyrics 14 years ago
I guess the somewhat stark ambiguity of the lyrics is what makes this song so touching and interesting for everyone. Honestly, I don't know Sam Beam, or too much about him. I do know he was a film professor and because of that he is very visual. And most certainly, I don't know why EVERYONE seems to equate the bird in verse two with rape.

Did you see the video??? Perhaps it's about SEX, becoming a woman.

A girl with a bird she found in the snow
Then flew up her gown and that's how she knows
If God made her eyes for crying at birth
Then left the ground to circle the earth

Does anyone remember the story titled "The Scarlet Ibis"?

The bird she found in the snow, drip drip, it flew up her dress - PERIOD!

If god made her eyes only for crying at birth, then it would be truly a horrible world if that was the only thing a woman was good for.

Perhaps its just a bare reference to coming of age - not rape. Not so nefarious.

Seriously, I don't think Sam Beam intended the second verse to be a rape verse. It's probably just a song about coming of age and growing up. Same with the boy verses.

Sam Beam seems to contemplate the universe and the utter lack of a monotheistic "god" other than the life spirit that connects all living things.

I could be wrong.

Aimee Mann – Dear John Lyrics 16 years ago
I love the boxing imagery.

"Throwing kisses so Richmond's unfortunates can go on"

Light hits so that the poor slobs fighting John don't end up in intensive care.

Wilco – Wishful Thinking Lyrics 16 years ago
Fill up your mind with all it can know
Don't forget that your body will let it all go
Fill up your mind with all it can know
What would we be without wishful thinking

I get the feeling that verse means that you should wish all you want. Fill up your mind with wishes, because for most of us, we won't do anything about those wishes anyway. We just let those thoughts go.

Chambers of chains
With red plastic mouths
The inside of outside
No one has found
How to unring the bell
It's just as well

How to unring the bell we just rung? When we say something kinky, oops. When we say something stupid, oops! Maybe we shouldn't have said that. How embarassing. It's out there - you can't take it back. Oh Jeff you kinky dude!

I think the rest of you got those other verses.

Wilco – Spiders (Kidsmoke) Lyrics 16 years ago
Hi all, this is the song that turned me on to Wilco. It's fantastic!!! Check out Neu! Hallogallo and Fur Immer (Forever) and of course, Television's Marquee Moon. These seem to be the parents of the song. Those damn spider accountants!!!
