Actually maybe not |
The Shins – Pariah King Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I think it is: "You feel dumb" rather than "It builds up" |
The Shins – Simple Song Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I'm fairly certain it is complete. It definitely sounds more like P than a B to me. |
The Shins – Simple Song Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Good catch, thanks. |

Thanks, I made the changes. Your version seemed to be completely correct in my opinion. |

Thanks, I made some changes as a result of your comment as well as some other things that I realized we were both probably incorrect on. |
Broken Bells – Meyrin Fields Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Thanks, that recently came to my attention. |
Flake Music – Blast Valve Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The lyrics are definitely: There's a crowd that believes any lie they find Rubs us better than our thoughts I guess When you look straight into the hole, yeah! |
Broken Bells – The Mall and Misery Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It is very similar however in the context of Nothing at All the line is about how we are specifically taught things have a price due to exposure to advertisement and consumerism. This song seems to be more focused on the realization of that and the conscious removal of oneself from that sort of thinking. |
Broken Bells – The Ghost Inside Lyrics | 14 years ago |
She isn't a prostitute, she is the proverbial 'Gold Digger'. She is in a relationship simply to be supported by a rich man, rather than because she loves him or enjoys him. |
Broken Bells – Mongrel Heart Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Close, I don't think she is selling her body. I believe the person is desperately trying to find love, however can't find anyone that will love her back. I think that line has to do with her making the ultimatum that if someone isn't going to love her, they may as well leave because she is too fragile to commit to someone who won't commit back. |
Broken Bells – Sailing To Nowhere Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Actually, They go down by their hearts One by one Long to find A way up Falling into ghosts, down |
Broken Bells – Sailing To Nowhere Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Just a couple things that I heard differently. Who'd a known, your a devious sister Following the ghosts down. I try to feel, but just don't Hurting and dead inside Go on and cut 'em in half Said I |
Broken Bells – The Mall and Misery Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I'm still convinced it's "Part of her opened the Callow mind" |

That is what I had initially heard and I had put that on here as the lyrics, however yazelis is right, their site says differently. |
Broken Bells – The Ghost Inside Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song is definitely about a woman in an unloving relationship, but she stays in it because her counterpart is obviously supporting. She sold her love to a modern man; is essentially she gave her love for money, she is a gold-digger. She can get over this because of the money she is getting. Give it up for that daughter She's a star tonight Without warning She gave up the ghost inside Is basically just explaining that this women sold her soul to be taken care of. Just like a whiskey bottle drained on the floor She got no future just a love to endure This gives some matter to shaking her hide "Too Late to Leave Him" are the songs in her car Explains that she will stay with this man but that she has to endure the hardship of not personally being satisfied. It also expresses that she tries to satisfy herself by partying and drinking. You call it chivalry Never pull a punch for free She basically won't do anything that doesn't benefit herself You ever wonder why they had to move on This phony honor code That puts you on your throne A double standard You invoke when you want But she expects others to help her without a response. The last verse is a narrative and criticism of what she is doing and is telling her to move on with her life or work out her relationship because what she is doing isn't worth it. |

Broken Bells – The Mall and Misery Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Broken Bells – The High Road Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Well I'm not suggesting it is completely about drugs. At the end of my analysis I summed it up as being "about trying to find a way to deal with the harshness of reality, and (it)chooses to present the possibility of drug use." It can be taken to mean many things, but the overall allegory is using drug use/addiction to represent something that is much more common, a desire to be happy or comfortable with one's life. |
Broken Bells – The High Road Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I find it odd that you find beauty in something that sounds good and is cleverly put yet you have almost no idea what it is trying to convey. Without a message all art becomes nothing more than something to sense, and not to feel. Plus all of James Mercer's work requires in depth analysis to realize his true genius. |

Broken Bells – Vaporize Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song seems to be about settling into a mundane and "Typical Life". It starts with the realization that our dreams are unrealistic and that they are so fantastic that the majority of people fail trying to follow them, and then have to fall back on a fairly regular life. It then goes on to explain the confusion of how one failed at following there dreams and how they are seemingly powerless to fulfill them now. "Why should we waste it on Buying into the same old lies?" Is conveying that we shouldn't try and live like everyone else, and that we should try and carve our own more exciting path, which is reiterated in the next verse. The final verse is just presenting the confusion around what we should do with our lives. This kind of ties the song together by expressing that we get confused or lost following our dreams and then settle into doing what everyone else is. |
Broken Bells – The Mall and Misery Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I made some changes but I think I will keep the title the way it is until the album actually comes out and it can be confirmed what title was supposed to be given to this song. |
Broken Bells – The Mall and Misery Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I assumed that the title was mistakenly applied to this when the album leaked., instead of the last song. I just found it weird that the line "The mall and misery" is in this song, yet it is the title to a different song. |
Broken Bells – The Waiting Game Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song is also officially called "Mongrel Heart" |
Broken Bells – The High Road Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think this song about doing drugs. There are many lines that give reference to drug use and the sort of escape that is commonly associated with using drugs. Go down to wait all night She's bound to run him out Invested in nothing at anyhow To each his own This shows a girl that is having trouble dealing with life, or rather doesn't feel her life is important. The daughter is sorting out She curls her lips on a bow I don't know if you're dead or not If you're anyone This verse is about a girl trying to fix her problems. I believe the second line describes placing your mouth on a pipe. While the last two lines are simply depressing thoughts that could either be the motivation for smoking or perhaps is simply an insight of doing it. Come on and get the minimum Before you open up your eyes It's all being served in your hands Your addled eyes This describes smoking enough to have a sense of enlightenment. Come on and get overdose Collected at the borderlines They want to get up in your hair This part of the chorus has an obvious reference to drugs by getting an overdose and then describing the motivation that people try to cause trouble in one's life and they need to relax, or rather it could be a line about the common paranoia that arises from smoking weed. Cos they know, so do I The high road is hard to find A detour in your new life Tell all of your friends getting worm It explains that it is difficult to find 'the high road' and that your life is changing because of doing drugs. It also exclaims that this new lifestyle should be advertised to friends who find life painful. The dawn to end all night Thats all you hoped it was A break from the warfare in your house To each his own This also shows a person who is having trouble dealing with life. The soldier is bailing out And curled his lips on a bow And I don't know if the dead can talk To anyone This is very similar to the earlier verse about the girl. It's too late to change your mind You let laws be your guide This here, with the rest of the song, argues that following laws isn't necessarily the best way to lead your life and that you may be better off or happier smoking pot. Essentially this the entire song is about trying to find a way to deal with the harshness of reality, and chooses to present the possibility of drug use. |
Broken Bells – The Ghost Inside Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Your second recommendation is definitely right, however even upon review I still think he is saying "A love to endure." It also happens to be a more relevant line to the rest of the song, and makes a more powerful metaphor with the whiskey bottle. Maybe try going over it again. |
Broken Bells – The Ghost Inside Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Thanks. I think I caught that later but didn't edit it here. |
Broken Bells – The Waiting Game Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This is what I think the lyrics are : Is it hard to wait? Drawn by your mongrel heart again If they don’t answer, would you want to be found out? You duck through the wind in your old blight on the town Love is turning you out Sliding worry round I try to warn its waiting game To bring that spectre down Would it be wrong To clamp down on your racing heart? Love And if they’d known, what sifted down to be found out? It’s not what you deserve Love is turning you out Sliding worry round I try to warn its waiting game To bring that spectre down Faster than you were going to allow Turn out the lights or say get out If you don't answer, would you want to be found, love? Five days on, trapped by a wave Love is turning you out Sliding worry round I try to warn this waiting game To bring that spectre down Black corn was soaking You'll be cut down in the seedy stairway If you don't answer, would you want to be found now? Sapped from the bed to the window Looking back on that time Starting in the minds What it is to be twenty nine Fame sets your life down Would it be wrong Would it be wrong To disappoint you now Disappoint you now |

Damon Albarn is the mastermind behind both bands and in terms of message they aren't that different. |
The Shins – Eating Styes From Elephants' Eyes Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think this song is about societal norms imposed on us through education and the media, as well as the extreme control over society by major companies. They want trash They want you batting a lash (Society, rather those that control it, doesn't want us to invest too much of our time being critical of it/them.) I'll eat styes from elephants' eyes (I'll eat up bullshit) They're in touch With their inner crutch (They love money) They wont stab but they'll grab And that's just like the other (They are greedy and though they don't attack people, it can be just as harmful as if they were, specifically to the poor and those that require the resources they are hording.) We get nerves And we drown it in booze (Simply, we avoid our problems. This doesn't necessarily have to be directly about alcohol and nerves, it can also apply to buying things to make ourselves feel better and other activities which only comfort but don't actually fix the problems at hand.) We take lies from elephants' eyes (We'll believe anything that is told to us by 'important people') They're in bed With a car eating lead (These important 'controllers of society' are very closely related to the 'machines' which are secretly poisoning the rest of humanity. Much like how a car produces exhaust which doesn't seem to do too much initially, but as we all know is slowly poisoning our air.) It wont stop if you shop With the lovers of bloodshed (This basically goes back to the "They don't stab but they grab..." line, in which these people are actually harming humanity; yet we still spend money on products which creates them profit. Though even if we don't agree with their actions, we still don't stop fueling their rampage against humanity.) I went to school, and saw slides Of where I'm meant to be Where I'm meant to be (Simply schools don't try to help people become smarter, but rather are there to impose lawful and passive behaviour while setting people up for jobs.) We read time Like a kid eating limes (We don't actually like being at work or school all day long and instead of doing things we enjoy we find ourselves always looking at the time to see when we will be 'free'.) We're in town when bees are let out We get laughs Through an osmotic patch (We are essentially constantly trying to be entertained to the point that we don't really care about anything else) We're attached to the past Cause our future's a bleak one (This could mean a lot of things. We are afraid of dying. We are told that the world is becoming worse and we need to preserve the current order of things; with these powerful people at the top. Being a child was much simpler, which is a common theme in James Mercer's work. Or, and objective sort of view on the rest of the song that the world is getting worse for these reasons, and nothing is really changing the direction we are going in) |
The Shins – We Built A Raft And We Floated Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think this song is about dealing with death and criticizing religion while at it. "Trapped like rats, Cornered by the flood" Shows that we all have the inevitable fate of death ahead "We built a raft and we floated Save for the tricks And the endless lies" This is saying that people found away to get over the depression of knowing you are going to die, but only by using tricks or lies. "They could be liked for their motives" This line is trying to justify religious people because they are seen as righteous, or even just because they are trying to make life easier to live by using these tricks. "I'd rather be crushed, or crushed the life out of someone Than be caught fitting in with the "League of the Collapsing Grin" Baby it's hard when you can see That they don't even know, that they don't know" This part really sums up how James Mercer would rather know about his fate, and have to deal with the anxiety that comes with it, rather than trick himself about it. "The League of the Collapsing Grin" to me gives the sense that people will eventually regret something or what they thought was good, now is bad. So by these people tricking themselves into thinking that they will live forever, when they actually do start to see the end of their life will start to be more afraid because they are only now actually putting thought into what is to come; now of course they have no time to properly prepare and death becomes very scary at this time. |
Foals – Cassius (Promo Version) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
So Cassius is supposedly the main conspirator against Julias Caesar. I don't really understand most of it, but I believe the part: Cassius, is over! You´re second best! Cassius, it´s over! You´re second best! It´s over! You´re second best! Second best! Second best! Second best! is meant to represent how Brutus is more famous for being the main offender against Caesar and has kind of stolen Cassius' light. |
The Wombats – Derail and Crash Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This guy used to have a really fun and flirty relationship with this girl, however at some point his teasing ended up being taken as something hostile. Now their relationship has gone down hill to the point at which she leaves him. |
The Wombats – Metro Song Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The guy is confused on whether or not he misses his girlfriend or old car, which would have been dependable enough that he would have seen her that night. He personifies the car saying basically that it had a mind of its own and that it would control this like the radio or his M.O.T. |
