Eagles – The Last Resort Lyrics 16 years ago
Put aside the meaning for a moment, my favorite thing about this song is how it builds up to the climax. Two times they start to the pinacle and then seemingly take a rest. It's almost as if we're supposed to use this as an intermission to consider our sins. The first time, to consider what we did to the mountains. ("Somebody laid the mountains low
while the town got high "). The second time to consider the Pacific Coast (the "hazy sun, sinking in the sea.")

Finally, they start the trip a third time. This time with the suggestion of further westward expansion to Hawaii. This time, however, the Eagles don't take the rest. No rest is appropriate because there is nowhere else to go from here. The third time is a constant crescendo. The music intensifies as more instruments are added. The lyrics intensify and certainly Henley's singing intensifies. This time, the Eagles finish the story with the moral (the last two lyrics).

Put down the lyrics and just close your eyes. The message will wash over you in the music and instrumentation as well as the lyrics.

Don Henley – The End of the Innocence Lyrics 16 years ago
You gotta love the way that Henley turns the Bible quote around to make his point. In support of peace, the Bible says to "beat your swords into plowshares." Isaiah 2:4

Here, Henley says that, in our support of Reagan and his aggressive defense policy, we are "beating plowshares into swords." Great lyrics and definitely directed at Reagan. Wish I could have seen him use it on Bush and Libby!

Indigo Girls – Galileo Lyrics 16 years ago
Such incredible lyrics. Not to take a position on the idea of reincarnation, but this song is great at pointing at all the implications of such an idea.

For instance,

"If we wait for the time till all souls get it right
Then at least I know there'll be no nuclear annihilation". How could a soul that got it right ever resort to nuclear annihilation. Wow!

Or, the idea that reincarnation can result in nothing but fingerpointing.

"But then again it feels like some sort of inspiration
To let the next life off the hook
But she'll say "Look what I had to overcome from my last life"

Such a great song.

George Harrison – Awaiting on You All Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't agree that it's about hinduism (why would he mention finding Jesus?). For that matter, he shows no favoritism to any particular religion. Instead, George is saying that you can find Lord / Jesus / God / whatever you want to call him / her, by pushing aside organized religion (you don't need "church", "temple", "rosary beads", or "books") in favor of internalized spirituality. Your path to God is inside ("open up your heart"), not through organized religion. George was certain a non-conformist! He never gets the credit that he truly deserves.
