Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 13 years ago
Ha. Yeah, it's a great song. Seriously, though, most influential song ever written? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Not even close. Not even a little. That's off base, off the reservation, out of town, overseas, and out in space.

I like how this entire reply section somehow didn't even begin until like 8 years after the original comment. And the first reply was from a guy going by a username that references a movie that's 6 years older than even that (Hackers). Good movie though. Totally a tech-gen classic.

Akon – Locked Up Lyrics 15 years ago
Wow, distortedsilence, man, chill. Repeating and reiterating is way common in any form of music (or art, for that matter.) Now, the one thing I don't understand, is that you're trying to make this point using a handle that represents an impossibility. Silence is the lack of sound. If you could distort it, it'd only be by creating sound. So, it's not silence then, is it? See, aren't pointless complaint and rant posts annoying?

Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics 15 years ago
Yep, great song. A lot about the dangers and/or futility of faith, or, more specifically, religious belief. The prime example of this is probably the line about one's heart being covered in pitch and made of wood. Both would seem to suggest a state of suffering and apathy. I interpreted "the universe is shaped exactly like the Earth, if you go straight long enough you end up where you were," in a metaphorical sense. One cannot escape reality. If you continuously repeat a behavior, eventually you end up just where you started. What goes around comes around...

Ben Harper – If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again Lyrics 15 years ago
A great retrospective and spiritual song. I saw him playing it live when he opened for Dave Matthews at Comerica Park in Detroit. Great. He's got another studio version that he recorded with The Blind Boys of Alabama, came out nicely.

Jace Everett – Bad Things Lyrics 15 years ago
Totally. Perfect theme song for True Blood. This song reminded be of that Doors song, "People are Strange." Anyone know if this guy has an album out or if it's any good?

The Doors – People Are Strange Lyrics 15 years ago
Another classic. My favorite thing about The Doors is that Morrison has a sort of classical or "traditional" singing voice, but his lyrics are so surreal and wild. The effect is fantastic. Oh, and yeah, stop using the "it's about drugs" cop-out for every song written or performed in the 60s.

Moby – My Weakness Lyrics 15 years ago
Ok. Finally did the smart thing and searched Moby's official website, trying to get the final word on the lyrics. This is one of my favorites, but I find that every time I listen I'm tryin' to figure out what they're saying. Anyway, I found an interview with Moby, and one of the questions was about the lyrics to this one and Honey. Moby stated that the lyrics in My Weakness were in some obscure African dialect, and he didn't know what it meant. Here's a link to the interview:

Anyone out there know anything about any African languages? It may even be an evolved dialect from French. It'd be cool if we could get this translated at least somewhat.

Primitive Radio Gods – Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand Lyrics 15 years ago
I was thinking about the zebra flesh line. The whole last verse, actually. The first few lines seem to suggest either meaninglessness or mercy, although the latter is less likely considering the zebra line. Riding the waves without knowing or caring where they take you refers to an idea of fatalism, or at least some feeling of acceptance. The next line is a little enigmatic. First of all, a crest is like the top of a hill, or just the high-point of an event or whatnot, so it's not really something you could go "through", but I'm assuming it means that the subject passed by or sped through the highpoint of life without realizing it. The last line... Zebras are black and white, so that's pretty obviously (unless someone else has an idea) pointing out the attitude of "everything's black and white, there's no gray area." So, they are taking up this attitude by "bathing" in this idea. So, to put it all together... This is all kinda thin, but here goes... The subject is sort of gliding through life, being too disillusioned by the meaninglessness or futility of it all, and thereby becomes complacent, uncaring, or fatalistic. They're now basically on auto pilot, just waiting for their time to be up. In doing so, they adopt a strict attitude, seeing everything in either black or white, not taking the time to wonder if there's a space between, and so doesn't recognize the "special" in things, and glides past the glory days. There's then nothing left to care about, so the creative side grows atrophied and we're left with nothing but black-and-white ignorance.

Bob Dylan – Bob Dylan's 115th Dream Lyrics 16 years ago
Classic Dylan. I had a radio show in high school, played this or Ballad of a Thin Man every night. The style, sort of a stream of consciousness perspective is rarely matched against this. The genius of it; it combines incredible poetry, often profound, while at the same time disguising itself as absurdism, the likes of which could be compared to Franz Kafka. A deeper meaning, sometime quite mischievous, clouded behind an array of odd circumstances. Love it.

King Crimson – The Court of the Crimson King Lyrics 16 years ago
I hadn't heard any of King Crimson's work before I watched the movie Children of Men with Clive Owen, and this song was featured. It caught my ear because I had just finished reading Stephen King's DT series for the second time. It's likely not the inspiration for King's series, which was primarily inspired by Robert Browning's "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came." It is possible, though, that it is slightly involved, if only in the back of his mind. He'd be of the right age and generation to have been a fan of the music, especially if you take into account King's hippy/LOTR-fan past. The song does suggest some otherworldly imagery that would fit Mid-World rather well. It could, though, be mere coincidence. "Crimson King" is not exactly a rare nickname to give the devil, or for that matter, any evil or magical antagonist.

That all being said, I made a mix of songs with literary references or inspiration, and couldn't resist putting this one on there. The couple Zep songs with LOTR references, Halleluiah (Cale version), Highway 61 (dylan), etc. If you're looking for some music that is UNDOUBTEDLY about King's DT series, check out a band called Demons and Wizards. They've got a few good ones, albeit somewhat cheesy at times. Iced Earth, I think may have one or two, but I may be thinking about a song about Beowulf. Late.

Madonna – American Pie (Don McLean cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
A classic american folk song torn to shreds and brutalized by a stupid american @#%%#. I'm ashamed to call myself a Detroiter after Madonna did this. For god's sake, she didn't even do the full song! And, how can you remake this song, anyways? The lyrics are very personal to Don McLean, as he's stated many times in interviews when asked who or what the song is specifically about. It'd be like remaking Fire and Rain my James Taylor, it just can't have the same emotional impact because it's specifically about one persons feelings.

Phish – Lengthwise Lyrics 16 years ago
I think, conversely to what Jazzin' said, perhaps he means that the only thing that's different when she's gone is how he sleeps. You normally wouldn't just say how you sleep, you'd say how you are more comfortable or that you miss her when she's gone. He feels more free when she's away, he can take up the whole bed laying diagonally.
