Bruce Springsteen – Mansion On the Hill Lyrics 13 years ago
it's about the haves and have-nots in life. those who have look down on the rest of the world from their place on the hill. those who have not "look up" at the others with a sense of awe. unfortunately for the have-nots, the "steel gate" ensures that each party stays put.

Steely Dan – My Rival Lyrics 13 years ago
here's the scenario:
there are two speakers in the song. The principal speaker is a thirty-something momma's boy. never really had a girlfriend, lives in mom's basement, maybe dad left them when he was little...he's got baggage...the second speaker only has one verse: "I still recall when I first held/
Your tiny hand in mine/ I loved you more than I can tell/ But now it's stomping time" I attribute this verse to the first speaker's mother. she remembers him as a baby. she remembers how much love and affection she has given him over the years, but now she is fed up with this whining leech of a son. she longs for romantic company, and the "jolly roger" (a barely hidden allusion to the older man's penis)is now committing the ultimate crime of f%@#ing the speaker's mother. he can't handle that her attentions have shifted from himself to this rival!
ps, i'm also thinking that the milk truck reference has something to do with maternal care...mother's milk? it could be any other kind of truck, why did they choose a milk truck...think about...hmmm...hmmm...

Bruce Springsteen – Used Cars Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm with you on the seating arrangements. This album, as a whole, is one of the greatest collections of modern poetry in any sense of the word. I teach 7th grade, and this has been my day one activity for the last five years. The kids try to figure out the age and sex of the speaker from the clues provided in the song...They try and figure out the setting, problems the speaker might encounter on a daily basis, etc...A brilliant piece of work! There is not a better song writer alive!

Steely Dan – Rose Darling Lyrics 16 years ago
i've always taken that the song was about masturbation...You know, the whole rosy palm thing--rose darling--he can't "visit" rose until snake mary (girlfriend, wife) has fallen asleep. masturbation is a way to "make my wildest dreams come true"

some pretty sick images follow if that's the way you read the lyrics. but maybe i'm wrong.
