I took this to be about schizophrenia... Schizophrenics are unable to track smooth motion, such as the movement of a pendulum. This interpretation is furthered by the following line pertaining to organic cures (medication rather than psychotherapeutic treament). With this interpretation in mind, the rest of the song is a medley of disconnected thoughts and reminiscences which might characterize the consciousness of a schizophrenic patient. But I'm a psych student... I see psychological references in everything. |

I'd say that this song looks at the Freudian divisions of the human psyche: the suburban man is the superego, what society expects us to be. The Jack Kerouac segment is the opposite, the impulsive id. In the middle of this battlefield is the ego, the "I." |

I've heard it argued that haemoglobin is the ultimate proof of the existence of God, due to a molecular complexity that (some say) could only be intelligently created (C738H1166N812O203S2Fe). That would explain the "haemoglobin is the key" in relation to the religious references. |
