So I've never really worked out the lyrics to this song... I'm particularly high. I flip on ten thousand days and kind of recline into an awake meditative state... and for the first time this song's meaning just screams at me. Absolutely beautiful, no matter how much of tool you hear, there is always more. A year ago I would have laughed at the idea of picking a favorite band. Impossible right? If not for Pink Floyd and Alice in Chains... Tool would be an obvious pick. |

People are focusing on the words... and yes I can say in experience that this song does relate quite well to a drug high. Comfortably numb is one of my favorite floyd songs - but mostly because of that outro guitar solo. That solo (especially when high) sends chills through my spine. I would say I am one who knows quite a bit about music, and I respect all of the true great guitar players and such. I don't consider David Gilmore to be even among the top 10 most skilled guitar players... But I believe what we have here makes a strong push for the greatest guitar solo of all time. Nobody that I have ever heard has come close to matching the emotion and soul that Gilmore threw into this guitar solo. It has a roaring voice, and to myself absolutely outshines the entire song. Seeing this live completed a "must see before I die" moment. |
