The Faint – The Geeks Were Right Lyrics 14 years ago
A lot of people are having trouble with this one, but no fear! The Geeks are here.
No? Alright then.

What few people have yet to come up with is that, in looking at the song, perhaps it isn't a person from NOW looking into the future, but someone from before now, gazing past us into the future we haven't gotten to. This can be heard in "When it sings like Bach/The eyeballs bulge/When the pink sun drops/The eyelids fold". Few people realize that, in certain sound chips for the Commodore 64, songs of Bach were used as sound bytes, referencing "when it sings like Bach" to mean someone gazing intently at a computer screen as many geeks do. When the sun goes down, it is time to sleep, right? And the sun is red at night, but for someone who has been inside all day, the blue spectrum is one which has been seen while red hasn't, so red appears as pink due to the influx of color. "When the pink sun drops/The eyelids fold" means the person has fallen asleep.
"When I'm in deep REM sleep or Twilight Zones" refers to a time when the person is sleeping deep enough to not notice the morning light (Twilight Zone has more than one meaning, people...the line that comes over land when illuminated by the sun, dividing night and day). "I take the freight elevator and press fast forward" Refers to a time machine used by the person in dreaming, in order to reach the future and carry things back to the past (possibly ideas, but the use of a freight elevator refers to heavy objects).
"Egghead boys with thin, white legs" sounds like any stereotypical nerd. The person/nerd is watching nerds of the future fiddle about with random things that he cannot explain completely ("I've got a chainsaw motor that's filled with rain" referring to an alternative fuel source, such as a hydrogen cell).
The rest, a lot of people get. Apart from the "Chainsaw choir". When you listen to it, though, it sounds more like "Chain saw choir", which would refer to many Saws being played at the same time (musical instrument). With the next line holding "And stretch out Bach", this could be the sound of many computers being used at the same time.

Janelle Monáe – Many Moons Lyrics 15 years ago
I believe that these are the actual lyrics, which many people seem to not have the ears enough to listen for nowadays. After playing Halo 3 for around 12 days straight listening to this song, and ONLY this song, for that entire length of time, it is hard to mistake these as being correct.

Verse 1:
We're dancing free but we're stuck here underground
And everybody trying to figure they way out
Hey Hey Hey, all we ever wanted to say
Was chased erased and then thrown away
And day to day we live in a daze

Refrain:
We march all around til' the sun goes down night children (night children in a round)
Broken dreams, no sunshine, endless crimes, we long for freedom (for freedom)
You're free but in your mind, your freedom's in a bind

Chorus:
Oh make it rain, ain't a thang and it's gonna fall
(The silver bullet's in your hand and the war's heating up)
And when the truth goes BANG the shouts splatter out
(Revolutionize your lives and find a way out)
And when you're growing down instead of growing up
(You gotta ooo ah ah like a panther)
Tell me are you bold enough to reach for love?
(Na na na...)

Quite Often Forgotten Lyrics:
He lived in sector 10
He had a friend named Linderman
Sail away, sail away some time.

2nd Verse:
So strong for so long
All I wanna do is sing my simple song
Is it square or round, rich or poor
At the end of day and night all we want is more
I keep my feet on solid ground and use my wings when storms come around
I keep my feet on solid ground for freedom
You're free but in your mind, your freedom's in a bind

Chorus

Cybernetic Chantdown:
Civil rights, civil war
Hood rat, crack whore
Carefree, nightclub
Closet drunk, bathtub
Out-outcast, weirdo
Stepchild, freak show
Black girl, bad hair
Broad nose, cold stare
Tap shoes, Broadway
T-t-tuxedo, holiday
Creative block, Love song
Stupid words, erased song
G-gun shots, orange house
D-d-dead man walking with a dirty mouth
Spoiled milk, stale bread
Welfare, bubonic plague
Record deal, light bulb
K-keep back kid not corporate thug
Breast cancer, common cold
HIV, lost hope
Overweight, self esteem
Mis-misfit, broken dream
Fish tank, small bowl
Closed minded, dark hold
Cy-cy-cybergirl, droid-droid control
Get away now they trying to steal your soul
Mi-microphone, one-one stage
Tomboy, outrage
Street fight, bloody war
Instigators, third floor
Promiscuous child, broken heart
STD, quarentine
Heroin user, coke head
Fin-final chapter, death bed
Plastic sweat, metal skin
Metallic tears, mannequin
Carefree, night club
Closet drunk, bathtub
White house, Jim Crow
Dir-dirty lies, my-my regards

Closing Lullaby:
And when the world just treats you wrong
just come with me and I'll take you home
No need to pack a bag
Who put your life in the danger zone?
You running drop it like a rolling stone
No need to pack a bag
You just can't stop your heart from hanging on
The old man dies and then a baby's born
Chan, chan, chan, change your life
And when the world just treats you wrong
just come with me and i'll take you home
Shang, shang, shang, shan-gri la
Na na na na na na na na na na na na.

As for a meaning? Well...without the full story (this is only a chapter of the first suite, The Chase) you cannot truly find a answer to what this song is about. You only know that Cindy Mayweather, or Alpha Platinum 9000 (her robotic model), has fallen in love with a human named Anthony Greenboum (possibly), which in the futuristic society Janelle Monae has created, is illegal. Therefore, Cindy is being hunted for her crimes. From the music video, though, this seems to be one of the last songs which she sang in public before she decided to run for her life. Perhaps the main reason for why she mentions such things as "Quarantine", "Jim Crow", "Outcast", "Gun Shots", "Misfit", "Final Chapter", and "Dirty Lies" in her cybernetic rap. Mayhaps this is her programming telling her that what she has done is wrong, but she thought it was right at the time. It would account for the stuttering on such words as she sings them.

In any case, this is a brilliant song from one of the greatest musical talents of our age. Well done, Ms. Monae.

Amon Amarth – Valhall Awaits Me Lyrics 15 years ago
It is "Wolf's jaw on my head"...Ahh, the battle attire of a warlord.

Paints such a beautiful picture, doesn't it? You can almost taste the blood and sweat...

They aren't exactly things which might happen...they are things which have already happened somewhere around the world.

Flobots – We Are Winning Lyrics 15 years ago
What does this song mean to me? Quite a lot, actually. i expected that it would only be a matter of time before an actual revolution would shake the "United" states again. What I did not expect was that the message itself would be so brilliantly written, as the Flobots' "We Are Winning" clearly is. And it isn't just the lyrics themselves which inspire a change. Did anyone else notice the subtle growing snare drum throughout the song (If you didn't shame on you) which, in my mind at least, reminds me of a war drummer on the field, beating away a rhythm with which to fight against what opposes you.

The lyrics do not tell you to fight against any one person, as some people seem to believe. It tells you to simply open your own mind and think for yourself. It tells you to not conform to the beliefs of others. And it tells you that, if something is wrong, you have all the power in the world to change it.

As has been previously stated, the first part of the song is a very calm yet powerful woman stating the ironies of life. Not only that, but it also shows how others have the ability to think for themselves, and know what is right and wrong, acting upon these feelings and thoughts as anyone should.

The second are, that which is sung as a rap, calls out to the average person. It speaks to you to wake up from the life that you are living in. To take a look around and not just accept what is. To force a change which is desperately needed but isn't being sought after. Personally, the phrases which really stuck in my mind were "Consider this a distant early warning / The fires imminent" and "Disinformation tube-fed / Check the Labels / Delete the Virus / Alert the Masses". These speak of what you must do for the coming revolution.

The third section starts by mentioning ideals which are vital to the mindset of revolution:

"Butterfly wing crosswinds send black hawks toward hurricane survivors" - Strength In Chaos - Creating what others belive to be chaos in order to keep others safe or, at the very least. alive.

"Roses sprout from empty lots and sidewalk cracks" - Life - Even in the paths of great resistance, there is always the possibility of victory, and that is the only way to continue against insurmountable odds.

"Pacifist guerrillas move undetected through concrete jungles" - Stealth - The idea that the message itself is underground, but those who know can hear it's words.

"New forms are beginning to take shape" - Evolution - That from this revolution will come a different frame of mind, whether that is bad or good.

The rest of the song is a, pretty much, "Call to Arms" battle cry in the lyrical sense.

I must say that I still get goosebumps from the final section of the song. "If you are thinking, then you are winning." Coupled with the title of the song, this means that the basic intention was to get the listener to listen to the message contained within. To understand that action must be taken.

Which reminds me...I still must make a picket-sign stating "Hammer The Battle Cry Into Braile Studded Armor". I love that phrase. A good way of saying that actual fighting is a blind cause.

Tell me if you feel I have misstepped my bounds in anything I have said. Comments are comments, but I have been known to cross the line before.

Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 16 years ago
I am not sure if someone has already posted something along these lines, but this is how I view this song. (Brilliant song, by the way)

"I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word"
(I had the power to part the seas, I was a mighty ruler of men)

"Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own"
(I have become a normal person, perhaps a recluse, living how the other half lives. My subjects have all left me now; peasant?)

"I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy’s eyes"
(I gambled in war, often taking risks in order to make a point)

"Listened as the crowd would sing
Now the old king is dead long live the king"
(I heard only the adoration of my subjects, though the adoration was only because I was the king at the time)

"One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me"
(I had everything I could have wanted, but things became too stressful, and I soon became trapped in my own glory)

"And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand"
(All of my possessions were only things, and all good things come to pass; everything I worked to build fell apart as I did.)

"I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing"
(I can tell that I am to part this life soon, and I hear the sounds of death approaching)

"Be my mirror my sword and shield"
(Tell me who I really am. Give me shelter and protection for the things I have done)

"Missionaries in a foreign field"
(I often sent those to speak for me in far away lands, but the words I sent were lies)

"For some reason I can't explain
Once you'd gone there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world"
(No one told me the truth, for I was king. They dared not to tell me of the truth, for fear of my wrath.)

"It was a wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in"
(In the distruction of my kingdom [or kingship], I realised who I really was.)

"Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn’t believe what I’d become"
(When we were invaded, people realized that I was not a true king, and I had no way to protect them.)

"Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate"
(There were those who plotted against me while I was king, waiting for me to fail, as I did.)

"Just a puppet on a lonely string"
(I only played the role of a king; I did not do all that a true king should.)

"Oh who would ever want to be king?"
(I realize now that I was a fool for thinking that I could have been a king in the first place.)

"I know St Peter won’t call my name"
(I have done many bad things in my time, and it is unlikely that I will see such glory as I did when I was king in heaven.)

Hope this has shed some light...perhaps not, but it was worth a try.
