The Strokes – 80's Comedown Machine Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Rad song. Julian's perspective toward Albert Hammond Jr. perhaps? Watched you passing by. Not on time anymore. To be honest I'm unsure what exactly this song is about. But there were no comments on this song and I wanted to be the first. First comment WHAT UP?!?!?!?! |
The Strokes – Partners In Crime Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Sort of a crazy little guitar-solo explosion right there at the end, just as "I won't forget" is fading away. I rather like this song. Dig it, even. Can't say I can really pinpoint what it's about though. Sue me. |
The Strokes – 50/50 Lyrics | 10 years ago |
"I wait on a darkened highway" stirs a vision of a sillhouetted man on an empty highway, just begging for something to come along his way. That renegade artist who's taking on the world, waiting for someone to show up in his domain. Wanting to prove himself. Waiting to fight. Beautiful imagery there. Subtle mastery of the song-writing process expressed, almost in the background. Songs with such a basic chorus can easily lead one to believe there is not much there at all. But just occasionally, the song proves it is actually riveted with some delicious words. Does Julian dislike judgement even if it's positive? I hope not. I judged the fuck out of him. |

The Strokes – Slow Animals Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Sidenote, the verses sound like the Scissor Sisters. Especially the second line of the song. |
The Strokes – Slow Animals Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Actually, I believe it is: Is it gone? I hope that nothing's wrong Is it gone? I hope that nothing's wrong I thought he was stuttering at first too, but it's just a clever placement of emphasis. |
The Heavy – How You Like Me Now? Lyrics | 12 years ago |
How do you like me now? is a slang term for crack. I wondered if that's what he was talking about. But when he said bad for our five times in a row ("I been a bad bad bad bad man.") I thought it was pretty obvious. Bad is also slang for crack. |
Dusty Springfield – You Don't Have To Say You Love Me Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think whiteflower is close, but missing it a little. This chick loves the guy so much, she doesn't care if he loves her, just as long as she can hang around. She won't "tie him down", so he can go do whatever, as long as he is "close at hand". She can't help but love him. Pretty sad. |
They Might Be Giants – I'll Sink Manhattan Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Also it's "As floodwaters rise" not "As floodwater dries". |
They Might Be Giants – I'll Sink Manhattan Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Interesting rhyme scheme in the third line of the three-line stanzas. SPOT to WATCH HALF you LAUGH underSTAND my PLAN answerING maCHINE |
Prince – Kiss Lyrics | 14 years ago |
He doesn't care what type of person you are, he wants to have sex with you. |
The Killers – All These Things That I've Done Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The video's seven parts are shown out of order, Pulp Fiction style. The numbers (0-7) can be used to put it in the right order, with the exception that 0 comes after 7. 1: Clean-shaven Brandon comes home to his wife, who slaps him because he has lipstick on his cheek. He takes a shower, but falls downward offscreen. 2: He lands in a trailer park, with his three bandmates, all dressed as cowboys with moustaches. 3: They start walking, and come across a donkey and a midget. They try out the donkey. 4: While still looking at the donkey, a convertible drives by filled with four sexy women. They are pulling a trailer with a light-up sign on it that reads "thekillersluts". The car parks and the women go into a house. The cowboys run over and tear off the sign. They break the lights on the last four letters, so the sign now reads "thekillers". 5: Fleeing the women who are now chasing them, the men run into an abandoned theme park and lose their pursuers. 6: Walking through a field now, they come face to face with the girls. They turn and run, and the women assault them with boomerangs. Three of the cowboys fall, but not Brandon, who bats away the weapons with the stolen sign. After hitting away all the boomerangs, he dramatically plants the sign into the ground. 7: Turning and walking from the sign, one of the girls has a last boomerang. She throws it and hits Brandon, who falls face-first into a puddle of water. 0: Slow motion of the fall into the water, and then a final shot of the girl merely walking away into the distance. Bam. |
The Killers – Spaceman Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I didn't quite take the story to be about alien abduction. Given that the song is called "Spaceman", I went in thinking it was about an astronaut. In that context I thought Brandon was narrating as an astronaut (not unlike Major Tom from Bowie's "Space Oddity") getting called into duty. They put him in an operation to prepare him for the mission, one that he didn't initially want to be a part of. "But when they cut me open, I guess I changed my mind." They get him all ready and send him out. But he does something wrong when he's out there. He goes too far, forcing them to call him by his actual name in trying to get him back. He makes some grand realization about himself and his life. "That was a turning point. Oh what a lonely night." And whatever it is he realizes, he tries to send it back to Earth. "But the public don't dwell on my transmission 'cause it wasn't televised." |
The Fratellis – Chelsea Dagger Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The Fratellis truly sound like the Beatles fused with the Clash. |
Paul McCartney – Monkberry Moon Delight Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Definitely about how fame ruined Paul and John's friendship. Monkberry Moon Delight = Fame Which Paul McCartney views as a drink that makes you sick. I think this is a hidden sadness on the album about the rivalry. "Sore was I from the crack of an enemy's hose, and the horrible sound of tomato." John's attacks and others criticism (throwing tomatoes). The two youngsters are of course John and Paul, sucking down the addictive substance. "Catch up cats and kittens, don't get left behind." Paul misses the innocence he had before being famous. "I don't get the gist of your letter." He doesn't understand what John wants from him, or what he is saying about Paul in his songs. I think the reason these meanings are so veiled is that Paul was too stubborn/embarrassed to back down from the rivalry. |
Daniel Johnston – Casper The Friendly Ghost Lyrics | 14 years ago |
He is referring to his own song "Grievances", in which there is the line: And the librarian said, you can't buy no respect. On the surface this song is obviously about someone only being respected after they die, but I think underneath it is even more bitter. It sounds to me like Daniel Johnston is saying no one will like him until he is famous, and even though that bothers him, he will be respectful to where he came from. Then again, this is just my interpretation, I have watched no documentaries. |
Modest Mouse – Guilty Cocker Spaniels Lyrics | 14 years ago |
At points, this song is obviously about conformity. But I think to say it is about Hollywood or "not following trends" is to sell Isaac short. That sort of bland message belongs to bands like Good Charlotte. I suspect more is at play in this song. The specific meaning of this song (like many before it) is completely ambiguous. The fact that most of it is a metaphor or contains a double meaning ensures we will only know it's true message if such is specifically stated by Brock or other members. I once heard a theory that this song was about Nazis/Hitler's Reich. Though possibly/probably not the case, it puts an interesting spin on the lyrics. |
Modest Mouse – Perpetual Motion Machine Lyrics | 14 years ago |
To me this is one of Modest Mouse's most easily interpreted songs. Perpetual Motion is movement that continues forever, which is physically impossible. A perpetual motion machine is something many people have tried to theorize or create, but never successfully. This song is saying everyone wants to live forever. Infinite life, like perpetual motion, is long desired and quite impossible. Living a Life until you die = Reading a paragraph until words run out = Running a race until time runs out |
Franz Ferdinand – Jacqueline Lyrics | 15 years ago |
when Ivor Peered above a spectacle forgot that he had wrecked a girl In a song by the Who entitled "A Quick One While He's Away", a man calling himself "Ivor the Engine Driver" seduces a woman whose husband is away at war. Considering that Ivor is a fairly rare name, I can only assume this is (if even just slightly) a reference. "Forgot that he had wrecked a girl." Home-wrecker. Etc. |
They Might Be Giants – She Was A Hotel Detective (1994 Version) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I like this song quite a bit. Such awesome/hilarious/cool disco-revival. Love the falsetto. It is crazy rare though, and it is really hard to find in the shadow of (She Was A) Hotel Detective. To help anyone out, this is off of the '94 EP "Back to Skull", and you can only really find it for download in a podcast on one of the fan-run websites. |
The White Stripes – Jumble, Jumble Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Additionally: Crumble crumble The bag is brown Rip up the paper To hear a sound Pick up the pieces Up off the ground Is definitely about partying. The bag being your life. It is brown, drab. But you can at least get a sound out of it if you rip it up. You can be slightly entertained if you destroy your life partying, but you will surely be picking up the pieces later. |
The White Stripes – Jumble, Jumble Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"Wave to me, I'm at the door." is the coolest and coldest way to tell someone you are leaving. So badass. |
The White Stripes – It's My Fault for Being Famous Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The first two verses are what he'd like to do to annoying fans and the third verse is why. |
The White Stripes – Instinct Blues Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Pretty much just telling someone to fucking get with it. Putting out is a really funny (and fitting) thing for it to be. |
The White Stripes – The Same Boy You've Always Known Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Jesus. This site isn't for "omigosh i totally luv this song jack whiet is so great!!!!!" Song Meanings Dot Net What do you think the song means? We all like the last line. What do you think it means? HelloOperator, I really like your synopsis. Omally, I kind of saw where you were going with it until your view on the casket line. I think that blatantly means finding someone good enough to be able to have the girl forget about the narrator. |
The White Stripes – If You Close The Door Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Okay, I'll say it. Um, this is a Velvet Underground song, actually called "After Hours". The White Stripes may have covered it live or something.. but.. I can find nothing on it. And still it's the wrong name. Check your facts boy-o. (Then Wrong 'Em). |
Third Eye Blind – Semi-Charmed Life Lyrics | 16 years ago |
(Part two of my interpretation) At different points in the song they want more to life. They turn to drugs because their life is semi-charmed. Partially good. Tid-bits of fun. But towards the end, she wants more than just partying and doing drugs. Semi-charmed, partially fun, but no substance to it. She leaves him. He's not listening when she says goodbye. He is still addicted. |
Third Eye Blind – Semi-Charmed Life Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Yeah, I agree with little bits of what most people are saying. Evolution of an addiction. First it was him and her (might have even been her idea), but it slowly turns to just him. She was a partier: "She comes round and she goes down on me." Coming around = coming off a drug. She wakes up from a high and gives him a BJ. But then she grows tired of it. "When the plane came in she said she was crashing." They come down from their high (point in life) and she views herself as crashing (also the obvious situational interpretation of the song, needing a fix whilst on a plane). She wants to stop. He obliges, as well as he can. "And you hold me, and we are broken." Yeah, they're fucked up, but they're fucked up together. HOWEVER: "Still it's all that I want to do. Just a little now." He wants just one more hit, etc etc. He feels heavy as the ground. Heavy=low=NOT HIGH. |
The Clash – Jimmy Jazz Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song was such a different move for the Clash. I think it very well might have been a 'feel' that Strummer or one of the other members had for a song, and lyrics that were implanted, with varying and unrelated meanings. "Feel like a soldier, look like a thief." I would think is just how a punk rocker feels/looks. Empowered or motivated against something, but still looks sketchy and isn't trusted. Anyway, here is a shirt referencing the song, if anyone is interested. http://www.zazzle.com/patryk/product/235746320914330050?ZCMP=ProductPageRecs2 |
