I agree with the ascertations that this song is trying to take on the point of view of Jesus. I see it as Jesus in his last week, maybe sitting in the Garden of Gethsemane reflecting on what has become of him. In that second paragraph where it says "listen as the crowd would sing", that sounds like Palm Sunday and his triumphal entry as people bowed down to worship him and sang Hosanna. Once you gone there was never an honest word may allude to the pharisees, and how they were always trying to undermine Jesus, as well as plotting new ways to get him arrested, not to mention all their perversions and exaggerations of the law. And the line "I know St. Peter won't call my name" hits me as when Peter denied Jesus three times. In those final hours in Gethsemane, Peter swore that he would stand by Jesus no matter what, and Jesus remarked that he would deny him three times and the rooster would then crow, which is what happened. So that line is Jesus knowing that Peter is going to deny him, saying to those who question him that he has never seen Jesus before and he doesn't know his name. Great song as I assume the rest of the album will be. |
