The National – Rylan Lyrics 12 years ago
I think you're right in reference to Berninger's ability to write such wonderfully sympathetic portrayals of people with anxiety. He gets the details of what if feels like to have social anxiety so right.

I'm not sure, however, that the lyric "take the quick way out. / You can turn blank white in a blank white house" alludes to suicide. It just sounds like a way of expressing the feeling of wanting to blend in in a social situation and to not be noticed. It's easier to take a passive role then to risk making the wrong impression or maybe even embarrassing one's self in front of other people.

The National – I Need My Girl Lyrics 12 years ago
They started playing this at the tail-end of the "High Violet" tour, yeah? In that context, the lyrics seem pretty straightforward. The narrator is away from home and a girlfriend/wife. He's starting to feel insignificant because he isn't around, and he is trying to reassure himself that he's important to loved ones- "but I am good and I am grounded." It's very lovely and appealingly earnest, at least for these guys. I wonder if it will re-surface on a proper album in a few years?

God, the vocals on this are breathtaking.

The National – Sugar Wife Lyrics 12 years ago
I agree. Lyrically, it's very simple and spare, but still incredibly potent. THIS is how you use very few words to great and, yeah, sexy effect.

Neko Case – Bought And Sold Lyrics 12 years ago
It should be "...immeasurable as it was divine," per Neko Case's web site.

This is one of the greatest songs ever written. That's all I got.

Changed the lyrics to what is in the liner notes of the album. So, this one should be done.

I believe it's "Your Jesuit profile will suit the coming apocalypse."

vid is incredible. Hopefully the appearance of a Destroyer music video after 15 years of releasing music isn't a sign of impending hiatus!

Destroyer – Kaputt Lyrics 13 years ago
I believe it's "I wrote a Song For America" and not just "song for America" in those last two lines. Anyways, I'm glad to see the lyrics to the newer songs on this fabulous album popping up here.

So, meaning... sounds like Bejar going back to his teen years and fantasizing about being a rock star- doing blow, being in NME, Melody Maker, having hit songs. The bits at the end about "step out of your toga" seems to represent, to me, Rome, so debauchery, hedonism, etc. which is kind of the repeating theme of the lyrics. Bejar seems to like remembering times past in many songs. The lyrics "Listening to Strawberry Wine...it was 1987, it was spring" in Watercolours into the Ocean on Rubies; "circa 1993/it was a good year/it was a very good year" on My Favorite Year. So more of that on Kaputt.

Beach House – Take Care Lyrics 13 years ago
It's amazing how Beach House takes these huge, sweeping, universal emotions and expresses them in sonic and lyrical form that just penetrates the heart of the listener. They've perfected this strength on this album.

One thing I noticed about the chorus is how the phrase "I'll take care of you/ if you ask me to" just becomes "I'll take care of you, it's true" as the song fades out. She doesn't need to be asked, she'll just take care of the person she loves. The fade out at the end is the spot on way to end the song; "I'll take care of you" is just repeated into infinity, like it's a promise that carries on forever. Lovely.

Beach House – 10 Mile Stereo Lyrics 13 years ago
I can't believe that the first few times I listened to Teen Dream I thought this song was a throwaway. Now, I couldn't imagine living without it.

As for meaning, those last two lines- "Love is a pantheon/it goes on forever"- never fail to choke me up. Combined with the synths, syncopated drum rhythm, and guitar which feel like they go on into infinity, it is perfectly complemented by the music.

Destroyer – Suicide Demo for Kara Walker Lyrics 13 years ago
I put the lyrics to this one up recently. Obviously not perfect and need some adjustments. Mostly taken from the lyrics to this song posted on the Destroyer Wiki with some changes to represent what I hear as the lyrics.

Anyways, the song... I cherish each and every Bejar album, but this might be the finest song he's ever put to record. A-ma-zing. Those little traces of melancholy in the horn arrangements, the futility in the lyrics. If feeling suicidal had a sonic representation, this would be it.

Joanna Newsom – Have One On Me Lyrics 14 years ago
The bookends of the song, the hypnotic harp verses at the beginning and end, seem like they are supposed to mirror Lola Montez's youth and death. According to Wikipedia, Montez contracted pneumonia after going out of a walk on a cold Winter day. The opening verse sounds like Lola walking into a courtyard on a walk, encountering a spider and being mesmerized by what she sees. Based on this memory from her youth, she creates her famous spider dance, and it unfolds into her life story. When the last verse enters and we go back to Joanna playing that hypnotic melody with her harp from the beginning of the song, Lola goes on her last walk and recollects this childhood memory and asks, to no one in particular, if that spider, the choice of a "daddy" long legs spider is significant, is proud of her- her dance and her life.

Yeah, it sounds stupid, but just being a listener, this came to mind very randomly. The bookend verses just seem so dreamy and hypnotic, almost otherworldly. Like someone who is ill or dying recalling his or her life and memories. So beautiful.

Beach House – Real Love Lyrics 14 years ago
Additionally, the second verse should start with, "the color you say is black..." and then I don't understand the next line after that.

Anyways, this song is wonderful, as is the album. This song could have just been a piano ballad, but there's something special and unique about it. The "clicking" or what sounds like a metronome at the beginning is a nice touch.

Beach House – Real Love Lyrics 14 years ago
I think in the first verse it goes: "it frightens you, and they go 'boo'/boo, boo, boo, boo," and so on.

Beach House – Silver Soul Lyrics 14 years ago
This new album was recorded in a church. This is most apparent on this song- it sounds like Victoria Legrand is singing some kind of sermon. It's hard to explain, but her singing sounds like she freaking possessed. It's such an amazing voice.

Destroyer – Bay of Pigs (Detail) Lyrics 14 years ago
I am finding this song to be vaguely sexy. Maybe it's Dan's sensual lyric delivery, or the swirling synths and thumping bassline. Either way, that feeling just seems...wrong.

The Fiery Furnaces – Cut the Cake Lyrics 14 years ago
This album gives me such a breezy 60s-70s in New York City vibe, like an episode of Mary Tyler Moore or Taxi. Within that context, the first verse reminded me of a typical reaction to the JFK assassination and the whole song feels like the perspective of a woman remembering when she first heard the news.

Anyways, wonderful song, wonderful album.

Beach House – Gila Lyrics 16 years ago
Gila means "joy" in Hebrew, and it is a girl's name.
