ow you're here, Now you're away
I don't want this, Remember that. I'll never forget Where you're at

this part of the song is the whole reason he can't allow himself to love her again. How she just left, and how he didn't want her to. So now love will always carry fear because he can no longer trust that she won't leave again, He'll never forget she left, or where she's at-what she might be doing without him, physically, or mentally. It's why he can't "kiss, just regress" and why he "could have been easier on you, I could have changed though I wanted to" he wanted to, yet a part of him wanted her to suffer the way he did when she left.

"black moon, white again, as she falls around me" must have been when she finally broke down, giving him the glimpse into her heart he really wanted, to know she really was sorry for leaving him, but by then, she'd seen the worst in him as well.

I hate to disagree, but I could have sworn it said "I could've (could have) changed, though I wanted to" If I remember reading the insert booklet right. Which makes its even deeper, he could have changed, he wanted to, but sometimes you're petty. You do things to hurt someone else, you know it's wrong, yet you do it anyway. Could be wrong, but "couldn't change" is still good, that just symbolises his incompetency and a part he couldn't control in the demise of the relationship, where "could have means he, in a way was sabotaging the relationship, thought didn't really mean to, but sometimes fear does that. You have doubts, fear creeps in, and you intentionally do things to hurt them before they hurt you, even though you know better.

IAMX – Song Of Imaginary Beings Lyrics 16 years ago
The way I see it, this girl could be a nun, or just one expected to wait until marriage, with big time jesus freaks for parents. So she's not like most women in this society. "where her sisters and the fathers can't save her soul" is her fantasies, her daydreams, which is why he's imaginary. Maybe like god?
I think the burned out poets mean the bible. She asks for guidance in it, but it's just "words from prophets and religious shows" I think perhaps she's lonely. So she opens up to it finally, so much so, she disappeared, the way many overly-religious people do. When they get an airy look on their face. And they lose their entire self identity. The title song of imaginary beings... god is the biggest superstar.
So basically I think this song is how religion can really detach you from what is real, And how easy it is to fall victim to it's promises of love, when you're vulnerable and lonely, and in order for you to really believe in it, you have to lose yourself completely, because you only live to serve. You are expected to die for it, and only then can you get in it's good graces. ????
