To me, it seems like a calling out to all hippies of the time period. San Fransisco was a haven for hippies, and many got up and left where they'd spent their whole lives to start anew in California. "If I didn't tell her, I could leave today", seems to add a bit to my thought as if he's saying that if he didn't tell his mother or a girlfriend who doesn't agree with his reason for leaving, he could be long gone with only thoughts of spending life in sunny L.A., instead of another place which feels like constant winter. Everything is dead in winter, but not in constantly sunny California. But, you never know the intended meaning this is just my taking the song and applying it to history (or, what I know of the time period), so it's probably not the intended meaning, but at least it does mean something to a lot of people, including myself.

This is a 'leave-me-the-fuck-alone-so-I-can-relax-for-once' kinda song and they're great songs to have cause if you turn it up real loud and hope hard enough, people actually back off. It's all about ME time and everyone wants a little me time now and again even more so if you're as famous as these guys. |

"some folks are born silver spoon in hand, Lord don't they help themselves" <- the rich/politically born children who would never have to engage in battle, yet remain greedy.
Now, I have nothing against the rich (hell, most of my friends are far richer than I), but this was wrong. Social class should never get anyone out of anything, cause you're still human. Plain and simple. Too bad money talks... |

I agree very underrated until recently though they've been getting gigs well it mostly started in Nova Scotia and some small gigs in the states as well...possible tour? I don't think we'll know but time will tell and I really hope next time they play here i can go...no one would go with me so I could get in (damn drinking age....). |

Can't agree more with what most have posted...Rik is an inspiration and I highly recommend the Rock n Roll Machine album to anyone who's new to the band. So if you haven't do so the solo in the title song is pretty intense. |

I was reading about this business earlier when this song played cause I honestly wanted to have a little more insight to the idea of the four horsemen...I don't remember much other than the names, but I can read again later anyways, it's interesting on some levels. |

Johnny Got his Gun (the book and the movie) are incredible. Dalton Trumbo heard this story of a young man who was nothing but a slab of meat so to speak (nothing but a torso and head much like the character) who was damaged in the war. The story is based on the first world war and was ready to be printed and copyrighted near the start of world war two. Only one factual error offsets the book from the song: the song mentions:
Land mine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell
however, in the story, Joe Bonham is disfigured by(I'm positively sure)a mortar shell.
Regardless, the two relate well and the book and movie are both worth checking out. |

I agree because you'd think that people who like a band and it's music enough to comment on it would have looked into the band at some point. I'm not saying I know absolutely ever detail on Metallica or the members, but I know some and am really interested on reading these sites to learn what I don't know. Some opinions and facts are neat and true which is always nice to find, which is why I love this site. |

Sorry GuitarAngel but you're mistaken. Fade to Black is on Ride the Lightening, which is followed by Master or Puppets which would become the last record to feature Burton as in 1986 while on the Master of Puppets tour their bus flipped. Fade to Black would've been written 2 or 3 years before his death.

Any words I could put here would still not describe how much this song made me miss all the people I have loved in my short 17 years on earth. It honestly made me think of the people I've lost who I wish knew that I love them, and that I hope the message got through to them. It makes me miss the ones who've left me, and those I'm just getting to know. Most of all, it makes me think of two important men in my life...my dad and my boyfriend. I have the utmost respect and so much love for my father, and without my boyfriend, I'd be still stuck in that rut I was in months ago (thanks for showing me how to love and trust people <3). Thank you both and I love you guys so much.
As for the meaning, Christian wants Gloria to know how he feels, and is expressing how he loves her. Some lines seem to make you notice how the world has changed. Instead of telling her 'I love you' to her face, he sends her a text, much like we do. And in the end, he just hopes his message was clear enough for her to get without receiving the text (in case it didn't go through). |

The first time I heard 21 Guns it reminded me of old protest songs from the 60's, about putting down guns and embracing the world when you realize that what you've been fighting for is for something that could be changed without the guns, or maybe not worth changing because even after change things will be as they always were since humans hate adapting (well, most of the time). If you don't know what's worth fighting for, or not worth dying for, you don't need the guns. Honestly though, if anyone else who's heard this and agrees with the whole reminiscent of 60's protest songs right on! It's about time we 'stick it to the man' 60 style they knew how to do it! |

they are AMAZING live! i saw them in 2007 in NS. the guy behind us was totally baked..he kept yelling at matt and the boys...random things like "matt mays is GOD....bruce springsteen!" and at the end matt played some springsteen for the lovely man...good times.
great song too....it's just indescribable what the song does for me and my friends. it reminds me of the good times and to roll with today instead of dwell in the past. |

this song to me means that basically, you never forget the first person you were 'in love' with. what i mean by that is, you feel like you love the person in that moment, but looking back on your past makes you realize that it was only destined to be short-lived...in most cases. sure some people outlast the whole 'high-school' romance thing and some don't but i'm saying as a whole, they are mostly short-lived |
