Howard Jones – No One Is To Blame Lyrics 3 years ago
Yes, @[jenbebe:35261], you nailed it. Very clear to me. I think people sometimes look for the most far-fetched meanings in a song when the actual meaning is right in front of them. Thanks for sharing.

The Vapors – Turning Japanese Lyrics 14 years ago
I don' think it is so obvious that it is about masturbation. Back in the late '70's, early '80's - about the time this song came out - it was a popular expression to say you were "turning Japanese" when you were getting high. In masturbation, your eyes squint for perhaps a few seconds, but when you are stoned, they stay squinted. I agree, the masturbation view does have a lot of support in that he is looking at a girls picture and is alone in prison. But the fact that this expression was so common back then - at least in my area - that it makes me think otherwise. We were certain, back then, that it had to be about getting high.

Newsboys – Entertaining Angels Lyrics 14 years ago
I always thought the song was related to the scripture where the writer of Hebrews tells his readers "Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it" (Hebrews 13:2). However, after reading the lyrics again, especially "Entertaining angels
By the time I fall to my knees Host of heaven, sing over me", I am wondering if they are referring to Jesus stating that the angels in Heaven rejoice when a sinner repents? The first two verses seem to point to someone who has wandered from the Lord but has come back to him. The angels would be rejoicing over that, so he is "entertaining angels" by his repentence. Possible? Let me know your thoughts.

"Thrive" is a good one that is recent. My favorite is "Take me to your leader" - an amazing album. I also like "Going Public" and "Not Ashamed" a lot. There are some great songs on those albums that are not on the "Shine" CD, but you will recongize some of them from the album. I like the original version of "God is not a secret" better than the version on "Shine", as well as their version of "I'm Not Ashamed". But, the bottom line is, most of their albums are really good.

My favorite song from my favorite Christian band. This, and "Going Public", exhort believers not to cover up their faith but to declare it publically. Great song.

I am reminded of Paul's admonition in Romans 1:16 "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile".

The Rolling Stones – Paint It Black Lyrics 14 years ago
This is about a guy who lost his love, most likely from death. He sees a line of black cars, which most likely refer to a funeral procession. He is in despair and depression and sees the whole world as black, which matches his feelings. He does not want to be consoled, he does not want color in his life. He wants everything black to match how he feels.

Led Zeppelin – D'yer Mak'er Lyrics 15 years ago
Robert Plant, in an interview, said it was pronounced "D ya make er", as in "did you make her", meaning, "did you make love to her". It was a popular expression back in that time. It was not meant to sound like "Jamaica".

Led Zeppelin – Going to California Lyrics 15 years ago
I am not sure if anyone wrote this yet (I do not have time to read 136 posts), but I read that Robert Plant wrote the lyrics about his crush on Joni Mitchell. Not sure if that is true, but I remeember reading that many, many years ago.

Number one band and one of their best songs. They were so versatile.

My favorite song of my favorite band ever. I agree with the poster that believes it is about JRR Tolkiens books. Other Zeppelin songs also refer to his writings (The Battle of Evermore and Ramble On, for instance).

Boston – More Than A Feeling Lyrics 16 years ago
First of all, this is really one of the best songs ever. It's not about masturbation, as one idiot said. It is about a guy who is reminisent of a girl he once loved, who he let slip away. The song he refers to reminds him or her - perhaps it was "their song". This song reminds me of a love I had in high school (over 25 years ago). I have similar feelings when I hear this song as this man has when he hears his song. It produces nostalgia, regret, sadness for mistakes made, and -yes - some happy memories too. It truly is a great song.

Secondly, Boston was probably a very underrated band. I believe their debut album - which this song was on - is the largest selling debut album ever. In the late '70's it was all over the radio. "Peace of Mind", "Hitch a Ride", "Smokin'", "Long Time" are a few of the other great songs on that ablum. I recommend that you find one and listen to it. Even though it is over 30 years old, it is still a great album.
