Metallica – Harvester Of Sorrow Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this song is about a child growing up in a dysfunctional, abusive family. Particularly, I think a parent is on heroin and an alcoholic ("Drink up / shoot in"). The child acts like a normal, sweet child, but the parents neglect him and leave him to basically survive on his own ("I give / you take").

Metallica – The Judas Kiss Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it is about living a life of indecision between good and evil. "Followed you from dawn of time" refers to either the devil tempting a person to commit evil, or Jesus trying to win the person's heart over an entire lifetime. "When you think it's all said and done" refers to a person thinking that their life is over and they are ready to see what comes in the after-life.

Jane's Addiction – Jane Says Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this songs is talking about a girl named Jane who is struggling to find love and be loved but is naive and keeps falling for these guys that treat her like garbage. She lives a modest life--"pulls her dinner out of her pocket", which means she pays for her own stuff and uses her money for something necessary such as food. She is an innocent girl that simply tries out love but gets treated badly by her boyfriends, yet she feels trapped and that she can't help herself to break away from these abusive guys.

Laura Veirs – Cast A Hook In Me Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about the thought of dying at any given moment and living life in the meantime. I think dying is more of a thing to look forward to, as she states by saying "Til time is gone and wrong is right." I think the sea references are referring to drifting offshore and being helpless and ultimately dying in the middle of the ocean.

Sounds like a drunkard on the loose, ends up murdering a local man, and the police come to get him and send him to prison for life (or execute him).

Cat Power – Headlights Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it is her having hallucinations from being high. The "headlights" are just a bright light that she is hallucinating coming straight to her. "My friend weeping /
My friend singing over me" is her imagining her friend is in front of her when (s)he is not really there at all. "Get up around eight X4 / Let's make some coffee / And get real stoned / Hey let's play a record or two" is her referring to the only thing she wants to do when she is high. "It's cold as hell" is her becoming sober and having withdrawal.

Cat Power – The Sleepwalker Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it means being lost all throughout life, wandering aimlessly and feeling frustrated by not getting anywhere. "Crush snow on my face / feels like burning" -- tell me how lost I am and it hurts me. "I can't see an end -- salvation anywhere" -- Chan can't see an end to such a lost life. "Think I'll wait here if he comes he comes down the river" -- Chan is waiting until natural death saves her.

Cat Power – Lived in Bars Lyrics 16 years ago
Gosh her voice is horrible in her latest albums. So nasal and old sounding, and the lyrics are too pop music like. What happened to her old lyric style, where it seemingly didn't make any sense, just a bunch of random stuff, yet you just KNEW there was deep meaning behind it? Now she might as well make a song that repeats "I love you / you love me / let's marry / this is pop music! / yeah yeah yeah baby yeah" and that'll pretty much sum up what her music has come to. I love her old music, but it just went down hill after What Would The Community Think?

Cat Power – Itchyhead Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think it means anything but just generic craziness. Just her pretending to live through the eyes of a lunatic. It is a great song nonetheless, and one of the great examples of how amazing her music USED to be. She has really gone downhill since the release of her latest stuff, particularly Jukebox and the Greatest. It just isn't the same feel :(

The Shins – Caring Is Creepy Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about how, despite we naturally want to be loved and cared for, when people do care for one another sometimes the one being cared for will feel invaded and want "their space." As in, the song means that caring and loving for someone might get you in trouble since some people don't appreciate the love someone else has for them, and instead think it is creepy and weird. It is wrong to think that way, in my opinion, since there is so much hate in the world when we find love we should do nothing but cherish and appreciate it.

Feist – I Feel It All Lyrics 16 years ago
Ok let's spend more time arguing what the lyrics are, then when they are finally corrected let' s just post random lines from the song with no commentary. Really keeping in spirit with the site.

I think it's about finishing a relationship and looking towards the future, in terms of moving on and learning from the experience to be a better lover in the future.

Feist – My Moon My Man Lyrics 16 years ago
I am totally appalled by how such an emotional song has been compared to anal sex, and menstruation. NO WAY!!

The song is about her boyfriend breaking up with her for reasons beyond what she can comprehend. He just acts up out of nowhere, and eventually dumps her, leaving her lost. "Shed some light on me please" is her begging her boyfriend to give her insight into what's wrong. "Take it slow / take it easy on me" is her pleading with her boyfriend to stop being abusive and threatening and instead be graceful and perhaps discuss things or offer constructive criticism. "Heart on my sleeve / not where it should be" -- she is stating that her boyfriend confuses her with his abuse and neglect, leaving her unable to share mutual love (the heart (love) is on her sleeve (out of place), instead of in her heart (in mutual love)). She compares the moon to her "man" (boyfriend) in that, like the moon, his abuse is part time, and in varying degrees (the moon has it's cycles, and only appears at night).

AND FINALLY, the most rediculously misinterpreted lyric: "Not as good as we've been / it's the dirtiest clean I know" -- this means they are fighting again, but unfortunately, it is all too normal but it is very wrong. It is the "dirtiest clean" -- a bad thing that seems fine because it is normal. And it is so frequent, it's all she knows.

Cat Power – Back of Your Head Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it is about a person that gives in to temptation easily ("big monster lover," "bigger pusher over"), and consequentially remains lonely ("stands/walks alone...") and often times in a psychedelic state of mind ("see you looking through me," "saw the back of your sweet mother's head / now I know that she think's I'm dead"). Ultimately, this person will die and realize how poor of a choice it was to give in so easily to temptation ("can't you see that we're going to hell?").

I think this song is about Jesus Christ, His love, and the hope of reaching Heaven.

Cat Power – Rockets Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about being cocky and overly confident, and then finally getting kicked in the butt for it. Specifically it refers to time passing by and being more and more cocky over time. "Where do the dreams of babies go" refers to, in my perception, how babies are so innocent, but they will grow up and deviate from such innocence--Chan Marshall is wondering where those innocent dreams went, basically.

Cat Power – Metal Heart Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is, like others have said, about hiding behind fake confidence and reacting to events in life like they are no big deal, when on the inside you are devastated. The "metal" heart refers to the fake, apathetic reactions to events caused by this "metal" shield around your true emotions.

Cat Power – The Coat Is Always On Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about how depression affects those around us, and how ultimately the environment will affect us. The first part, requesting her sister to lay her head down, means that her sister (or the one she pretends to have for this song) is fatigued and weak from depression. The lyrics "Father said he was going to give me something / gave me hate" mean, in my perception, that you can't even run to your family for help; they will only hate you and make you feel worse. The part stating "Brother can't even speak...he's only 17" talks about that depression has gotten the better hold of her brother, to the point he can't even function normally in daily life. Surprisingly this brother she refers to is only 17, so young yet depression can still affect anybody. I think the very last part, about "home sweet home" questions what happened to the "good old days" and wonders if life will ever get better. Either that, or perhaps she is referring to suicide and the "home" is Heaven, and she is contemplating suicide and remembering there is always death to fall back on.
