Thrice – The Great Exchange Lyrics 14 years ago
My favorite Thrice song. What a great picture of who Christ is, and who (including myself) man is.

Sin is no small matter, because we have no small God.

Thrice – At The Last Lyrics 14 years ago
This song has heavy ties to matthew 5.

Christ reveals sin not being sin because of its end result. Sin exposes the heart, a heart that's depraved and in need of a savior. People will never see a need for Christ if they don't believe they've offended a holy God. Why would someone expose themselves to kemo, if they didn't believe they had cancer? Unfortunately people refuse to see there sin for what it is, simply because it's not to he extreme they've seen in murderer's, adulterers, thieves, etc.

Matthew 5 excerpts

21"(Z)You have heard that the ancients were told, '(AA)YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be [b]liable to (AB)the court.'

22"But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before (AC)the court; and whoever says to his brother, '[c]You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before [d](AD)the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the [e](AE)fiery hell.

27"(AJ)You have heard that it was said, '(AK)YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY';

28but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman (AL)with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

29"(AM)If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into (AN)hell.

30"(AO)If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into (AP)hell.

If you've never accepted that you're a sinner, it's because of your heart, not because of what the world can use as evidence against you. It's how you've offended God, and He ultimately will judge you. There's two ways to obtain salvation, live perfect as God is perfect, or accept what He did on the cross on your behalf.

Pilgrim's progress.
This song is clearly drawn straight from scripture.

Thrice – Circles Lyrics 14 years ago
People run around chasing after vanity. Always have, always will. Without foundation and purpose, without knowing and believing what you exist for, you're just running in circles.

I think you bring up some good points, and can agree to disagree about the context of the song. I think the context is still corresponding to God. Just because of the these lines having more relation to God than air in my opinion...

I Moved in you and stirred your soul to sing
(And if you'd let me I would move again)

and especially the end...

(Helped formed the final words before you death)
I pitied you and piled your sails with air
(Gave blessing when you rose upon my breath)

And after all of this, I am amazed
That I am cursed far more than I am praised

I dont think we curse air, or praise it for that matter, and i think when Dustin writes his responses there's an intentional mystery to draw those who arent Christians to the truth in His writing. Just as secular music will the impact a christian who listens to it, even if he is in disagreement with the meaning behind the song; so i think dustins lyrics impact nonchristians who don't necessarily understand or believe in the meaning. Hopefully that makes some sense...

Mr. critical thinker. It would be nice if you would respond to the stance of my comment. Instead of being ignorant about a religion you hate from the outside and making completely incorrect assumptions. Tell me you believe Dustin leaves his beliefs off to the side when writing, and I'd have to disagree. But there's no solving this disagreement, i just think any logical person wouldn't draw to a different conclusion for the reasons i stated.

Now, Mr. critical thinker, explain to me the line in the song that goes as follows

I pitied you and piled your sails with air

Does air refer to itself in the third person? Or is it something else other than air, maybe something that created the air?

Indeed much of this song is talking about air, but its more about the source in which gives us air. God. Now if you have something worth saying in response go ahead. You hate religion and Christianity, alright then. You don't have to prove that to me or anyone, just give me a better explanation than i have given for the meaning behind the song. Use those critical thinking skills would ya?

PS Freud!? Yea, put your faith in guys like yourself and Freud, you'll certainly acquire much about the earth and why you're here.

DISGUISTIPATED...

You mean to suggest that Dustin puts His beliefs off to the side to write His music? He would write songs so deep and intelligent that he just puts his own thoughts and beliefs off to the side?

If you're an open God-hater that is one thing. But use a little common sense please. What great work has an artist produced where he pushes all he believes off to the side when creating his work

Im sorry you hate the thought that such amazing writing/music comes from a Christian and find it easier to listen too the music, by being blatantly stubborn about the thoughts behind it.

Maybe the reason its so appealing to you is because you're getting a real taste of what insight Christianity is like!

Call it air then... But this is Gods working in our lives, all the things He does! And yet, people like yourself curse Him rather than praise Him. Thanks for proving Dustin's point.

No doubt there's deeper meaning. But this is literally the story of Daedalus and his son Icarus in Greek mythology. Cool song.

I find it troubling that people believe Dustin is referring to anything other than the Bible in any of his music. There are few obvious exceptions.

If you're a Christian, as Dustin self-professes and seems to back up (especially lyrically!), you don't put your beliefs off to the side to create such passionate work. What drives a great artist to make great work, is there passion to express deeply what they believe!

You don't have to be a Christian to understand that what drives a person and makes them successful is his ability to express whats on his heart. Christ is everything to the Christian. They're aware that He is there only hope for all. We've all sinned and fallen short of God's perfect standard of holiness. We all choose our own ways than to surrender to His. All of us struggle with wanting to be God ourselves. But He created us to have fulfillment in Him! Any other way is not true joy and ends in wrath. Christ puts sinner's who believe in good standing with God. Christ is everything. Whether you believe it or not, Dustin certainly does and so does myself and every other Christian.

All his songs and lyrics can be related to from different secular angles, but please don't be so naive to think when he's writing this music it's not under adoration of Christ and written in order to worship the God He serves and loves.
