Big Brother & The Holding Company – I Need a Man to Love Lyrics 15 years ago
the first time i heard this i thought she was singing about kb. totally irrelevant, but a great song.

Grateful Dead – Doin' That Rag Lyrics 16 years ago
perhaps the rag is soaked in diethyl ether, which was much more popular back in the day. wadin in the water and never gettin wet may be about how ether evaporates quickly so even with a soaked rag in your face, you wont get wet. i love the hipsters and chicksters part, i wish i could say it all the time.

The Velvet Underground – Sister Ray Lyrics 16 years ago
couldnt hit it sideways is just lou reed rambling about how he cant find a vein. because of this damn song i cant stop saying time time or ride ride. sorely underappreciated song, album, and band.

The Stooges – 1970 Lyrics 16 years ago
not too many bands could play with this kind of energy and still maintain a high degree of musicianship. how many other punk or hard rock bands can successfully include a free jazz sax solo? probably had a lot to do with john cale's presence, but still an undeniably fuckin great band and easily one of the best to ever play.

The Stooges – Cock In My Pocket Lyrics 16 years ago
does anyone know what this song is about?

my guess is its about a guy who just killed a rooster, while riding down the highway of life, and is going to make his sweetheart some fried chicken. the pocket is a metaphor for the soul, right now its filled with love for his girlfriend(the fried chicken) but he wants to share his love and fill his girlfriends soul. but hes also afraid cuz hes never been in love, so he says he doesnt want romance. hes been hurt before, so he wants to taste blood for revenge too. its so beautiful i could cry right now.

its this kind of sensitivity and romance that would make me go gay for iggy. plus its a kickass little rock number.

The Stooges – T.V. Eye Lyrics 16 years ago
rage against the machine totally ripped off this riff, and i cant blame them.

noone can make spousal abuse as fun as lou reed.

I've been waiting for so long to just hear a song like this.

Violent Femmes – Kiss Off Lyrics 16 years ago
i think this is more about just smoking cigs then drugs or suicide. any smokers out there, especially nowadays, know how many dirty you looks you get just from lighting up outside and people saying its sick. I mean we know cigs are bad for us, so just fuck off and go hug a tree. You can be pretty discreet with pills, but not smoking so i dont think hes poppin pills. I thinking each number he goes through is just the amount of cigs he goes through in a day, hes not trying to od or anything.

The Velvet Underground – I Heard Her Call My Name Lyrics 16 years ago
ya, the free improv so is a blistering mind fuck. lou reed was a big fan of cecil taylor and ornette coleman in his early days. if this were any other band i wouldnt think it was about necrophilia. he also uses the dirtiest, grimiest distortion on his guitar, and its just fuckin awesome.

The Velvet Underground – Lady Godiva's Operation Lyrics 16 years ago
i love the guitar on here, and lou reeds vocals on here are brilliant(well... at least insanely awesome).

The Velvet Underground – White Light/White Heat Lyrics 16 years ago
while this album may be among their weakest, i still think it might be their most underrated.

this song is obviously about lou reed falling in love with light bulbs: molesting them(tickling him), lookin at them too long(go blind) and using them as vaporizers and not using the clear ones(mess up my brain). he gets a hard on just seeing street lamps(hey foxy mama). hes also a bad driver cuz he cant stop lookin at headlights. also if you play the song backwards you can hear lou reed saying "this song is about lightbulbs".

The Velvet Underground – Oh! Sweet Nuthin Lyrics 16 years ago
lou reed didn't fuck around around with the black tar shit when he hit it big; he got the best fuckin smack around. its just about as likely hes talking about fecophilia as heroin.

this song reminds me of that kind of sweet nothing like in like a rolling stone(although dylan never called it that) - just the "when you got nothing, you got nothing to lose" kind of nothing. i also see some connections with the buddhist nirvana of having no possessions.

anyways, bitching guitar solo.

i actually just read that its about grace slick

Syd Barrett – If It's In You Lyrics 16 years ago
fun fun song, but theres something desperately insane and tragic about(at least when he sings on one syllable). the kind of song that has you laughing in tears when youre on the verge of a breakdown. to me the lyrics seem more like free association with whatever vibe hes got going in his head. possibly a collection of fragments of memory that he sees fits. although some of the lyrics seem intentional and premeditated, especially all the references to the steel rail. whether he made them up on the spot or wrote them before hand, theyre absolutely fantastic, especially the steel rail and gotta write her a letter lines.

Syd Barrett – Here I Go Lyrics 16 years ago
self destruct brings up a great point. if it werent for david the record companies wouldnt even have given syd a record deal, so thank god for gilmour. i think taking this into account, a big band is far better than you just reflects his attitude towards syd no longer being in pink floyd, and not necessarily any dislike for floyd. they all stayed in contact with him after he left, so it was on good terms. i mean he would stand on stage in concert, stop playing, and detune his guitar. to me his whole first album is syd trying to sober up and understand himself, almost in the same vein of velvet undergrounds self titled album(not the one with nico). i believe the rest of the song is just about a girl that doesnt really understand him but is still in love with him, or just his interaction with people in general. anyways great song, great album, sorely underappreciated.

Jefferson Airplane – Won't You Try/Saturday Afternoon Lyrics 16 years ago
highlight of one of the most sorely underappreciated albums in history. pretty much about setting yourself free from your ego and pleading the listener to try too. maybe a little cliche 60's with the lyrics, but great message and brilliant song.

Buffalo Springfield – Hung Upside Down Lyrics 16 years ago
just about life in a downward spiral(possibly from rough break up?). even though its a depressing song, the chorus is pretty sweet and kinda fun. a shame not too many ppl know this one.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Are You Experienced? Lyrics 16 years ago
i think this is about hendrix trying to get a girl he loves to drop acid with him. especially the parts about her world not letting her go is a psychedelic reference. letting go of your ego is pretty much the cornerstone of every psychedelic trip, at least the first one. it is meant to be more about freeing the girl he loves than just a song about acid. a lot easier to understand and appreciate if youve ever had a psychedelic experience, not that you need to be experienced to enjoy this.

the last line is probably my favorite quote from any song ever.

The Byrds – Artificial Energy Lyrics 16 years ago
this is obviously about acid. the ticket to ride his a tab, which explains why he took it. he just dropped some acid and is waiting for it to kick in(which can be quite terrifying on the come up if youre not ready). the rest is about his trip. the vocals on this are pretty fuckin awesome, and the ive got a strange feeling part his just plain badass. one of my favorites off of one of their top 2 albums(the other being younger than yesterday).

Buffalo Springfield – Rock & Roll Woman Lyrics 16 years ago
i agree that the woman represents some kind of happiness, possibly some kind of enlightenment, piece of mind, or just a drug. although the last stanza doesnt seem like hes singing about drugs.

somebody please explain how this has one comment and for what it's worth has 40+

Buffalo Springfield – Mr. Soul Lyrics 16 years ago
the beginning kind of reminds me of the intro to the byrds 8 miles high, which isnt hard to believe since david crosby did play with buffalo springfield at monterey. i fuckin love the last lines to all the verses, and the way they sing them. i have no idea what the theyre about but thats kind of why i like it.

Buffalo Springfield – Bluebird Lyrics 16 years ago
that guitar is trippy as hell, and then the do you think she loves you part together is all just like a psychedelic orgasm. i have no idea what the hell the song is about, but if i had to guess its all about some girl hes just enamored with and is just describing her throughout the whole song.

Buffalo Springfield – Flying On The Ground Is Wrong Lyrics 16 years ago
personally i think its about not letting go of a girl that onced loved you. his world is falling down because the girl left her, but hes still holding on to her. flying on the ground may mean hes still swept away by her, but needs to let go and cant, so hes flying but still on the ground(her).

i dont think the upper and downer analogy is very valid. an upper just exhibits an excitatory response to the nervous system while downers produce an inhibitory response. alcohol is a physiologically a "downer" but does not depress most ppl, at least if theyre not already depressed. nicotine is physiologically an upper, but it relaxes most ppl. neither term has anything to do with an emotional response; who would ever take a drug that makes you depressed and sad? anyways uppers and downers is just a product of the gross misinformation from dare and society on drugs.

thats not to say your views totally wrong. he could be singing about a drug he cant stop using, but has gotten to the point where he definitely should stop. its not as if noone in the band didnt use drugs or wrote songs about them, but to me this doesnt seem to be one of them.
