Silversun Pickups – Seasick Lyrics 12 years ago
Silversun pickups makes some incredibly dreamy songs. This one make me feel like I'm dreaming but also there are lucid and incredibly aware moments, it's like a song that you would play after you've been seasick all day and trying to compose yourself in front of your loved other (feels like going on a cruise) and after all that energy spent being sick, falling asleep becomes so easy.

Devotchka – All the Sand in All the Seas Lyrics 13 years ago
This song means a lot to me. The first verse describes the general corruption in the world whether it's corporations' bargain basement lows or common criminals, then Nick is referring to the fact nobody is listening anymore in the second verse. Then in the third verse is about leaving, but this time he expects you to leave with him.
The chorus is so catchy and it sounds reflective just like the first two verses, perhaps referring to the corruption, or the part that nobody listens, and the line "here's the part that always gets me" is really catchy and could be referring to how the outside world always has a catch to it that gets to him.
"You float across the room" and the pedals falling from the mouth must refer to a past love, almost a ghostly love if floating across the room is how he sees it, and then the lover's civil war refers to the split, but remember he wanted to count to three and leave, so there is another common theme of lost love from Devotchka.

I find the chorus in this song EXTREMELY catchy and I heard this song live at the twist and shout cd release. it sounds so much more sonic and dynamic than their music before. The interesting thing about the song is the usage of piano at a high tempo and the loud, almost rock style, drums that build up tension in the song.

Hope this helps/makes sense. This album is fantastic!

Devotchka – All the Sand in All the Seas Lyrics 13 years ago
(Lyrics from the cd case)
All your precious souls
have been bought and sold
for bargain basement lows
to common criminals

Now you are having visions
Adverse flying conditions
over seas transmissions
to anyone who will listen

Waiting for the drums to kick in
you want to free your earthbound limbs
I am gonna count to three
then you are leaving here with me

Are we wasting all our precious time?
Chasing dollars chasing dimes
german english japanese
all the sand in all the seas
it's all in place
it's all laid out
as we speak it's going down
Oh don't forget me
regretfully
Here's the part that always gets me

You float across the room
your lips are in full bloom
pedals fall from your mouth
have you found me out?

we've been here before
a lovers civil war
I will wait religiously
don't forget you came here with me

Are we wasting all of our time?
Chasing dollars chasing dimes.....

Deftones – Beauty School Lyrics 14 years ago
While Chino takes a stance like Maynard from Tool with having multiple interpretations, it seems obvious to me (not from personal experience but from what I know) what the meaning is.

"Cause you could die if you take it alone" -- This is a reference to drugs, while we don't know which yet, looking at the majority of the rest of the song suggests a drug that induces a euphoric high. Cigarettes, Pot, coke and (most likely what Chino is referring to), Meth are all drugs that do this. Meth is the one that could definitely result in you dying if "you take it alone". I have never done it for this reason. But I can see Chino's gotten a lot skinnier in the 'Rocket Skates' video and naturally I assume he's doing meth again.

"I watch you taste it. I see your face. I know I'm alive. You're shooting stars. From the barrel of your eyes. And it drives me crazy, just drives me wild".

This is a very obvious reference to Drugs again. When you look at the wiki on Meth, they define the effects as "increases alertness and energy, and in high doses, can induce euphoria, enhance self-esteem, and increase sexual pleasure".

That said, the meaning seems obvious. He is very alert of what she is doing (tasting it, seeing her face, being aware he's alive, shooting stars from eyes) and has become crazy/wild because of the energy/sexual pleasure.

Yet the aesthetic value of this song is so much more. I actually try to put this meaning out of my head, but I think it's the most concise one that I see in the comments yet. But still, this song is very team-sleep-esque (a bit like teenager from the white pony album) and definitely is one of the best songs on the album by far.

Silversun Pickups – Catch and Release Lyrics 15 years ago
"Do you see hwo the wind in your hair now feels differently"

This line is correlating with the theme of a brief hookup that doesn't work up ("backwater overflow, engine's blow") and the girl who hooked up with him just feels different after hooking up (too soon?).

Silversun Pickups – It's Nice to Know You Work Alone Lyrics 15 years ago
I can't help but get a sense of President Bush in this song: "in the sound when the levees break" and "with watermarks on a pillowcase" are lines that seem to refer to Bush being totally oblivious to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. This seems particularily true with the verse:
"But all the grace is gone, gone
And all the tired scorn is gone
And all the fire is gone, gone
But the reveal is gone, it's gone"

It seems like Bush had some grace to his job (I'm kidding...really) with the "mission accomplished" and stuff like that but he's gone. So is our tired scorn for him, the fire for our government has been put low by recession and it seems impossible to reveal what is in our future. It seems like the band is saying "It's nice to know you work alone..." to the ex-President Bush because we all know (because of Obama's outstanding job so far) the President doesn't work alone but somehow Bush got that impression of his job, probably because he has ADD and Dyslexia brought on by lots of cocaine.

Silversun Pickups – Draining Lyrics 15 years ago
Wow... I have to say, I've been reviewing this album in order of the songs on the cd because it's NEW and I've been looking forward to Swoon being released and so far I haven't seen a song on the album that really catches my breath like this one.

I agree a lot with what Cabres says and Cabres captures all of the symbols and ideas of a relationship and maturity and what time does to love in his post. I just wanted to add (because I have been reviewing this album from beginning to end) that this band plays shoegaze/dreampop which means their songs make you feel like you're IN A DREAM!!

so, turn up the music, lay back and relax...

cheers to silversun pickups for such a mature, evolved sound that I had never expected...

Silversun Pickups – Panic Switch Lyrics 15 years ago

I agree with chardsofglass that this song is a reference to the music biz and also with Seanek that the two most powerful lines are

"If I go anywhere that you want me to go,
How do I know you'll still follow?"

because it seems like they are also referring to their fans and hoping that they can understand this new sonic direction that Swoon is taking.

IT'S GREAT! SHOEGAZE AT IT'S BEST!!! THE GUITAR SOLO AT THE END IS SOOOOOO TRIPPY! (excuse the capslock, enthusiasm for this album...)

Silversun Pickups – Growing Old Is Getting Old Lyrics 15 years ago
re: the lyrics : I'm pretty sure it is
"Pressure on
Our hollow bones
and the varicose"

but could be wrong. It just sounds very similar plus varicose is a word used for veins typically in OLD people, veins that have gotten knotty and I'm sure you remember as a kid seeing the veins in your grandma's legs... those were varicose ;)

My interpretation of this song is again based off what a good shoegaze/dreampop song does to you: makes you feel like you're asleep then you wake up. it is also important to me to note that psychologists suggest something called a collective unconscious and that would be basically what we all dream about and this band is definately trying to tap into that vein (heheh, a varicose vein!) by using a theme like "getting old".

the lyrics are telling us to stay young although we are growing old!

Silversun Pickups – The Royal We Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is powerful sonically; it is great shoegaze that builds up like a dream and then at the end "when it's all over and you open your eyes / you see the room turned on its side / and you'll be lying down" and that is what a good dreampop/shoegaze song should do is just have you believe you're dreaming then suddenly you wake up...

Silversun Pickups – There's No Secrets This Year Lyrics 15 years ago
I think generally speaking this song is brian aubert and the rest of SSP's way of saying, this album is not secret anymore because of the last line: "before you fall into your Swoon". It's been long awaited and this song is definately interesting.

John Frusciante – Song To The Siren Lyrics 15 years ago
If you have read Homer's Odyssey you'll remember the sirens that Odysseus exposed himself to. Odysseus was on a journey home and that's something I think this music represents is the continuity and journey of something in life. Ulysses is a later novel by James Joyce which further represents that idea of continuity on paper and the journey of the story. This song has a story similar, represents the psychological influence of sirens, and beautifully played guitar and sung.

the lyrics say enough, if it was about heroin it would say heroin in the title but it's not so stop being retarded. a new world is a term for reconciliation in some circles, so the lyrics definately reflect reconciliation.

Devotchka – This Place Is Haunted Lyrics 15 years ago
There are a few other elements to the song mos doesn't touch on

The title: "This Place Is Haunted" can be referring to a house somewhere in Denver or anywhere with haunted houses, and there are plenty of haunted houses, but this specific house will be where his woman lives. It is haunted (change the locks/ we are unwanted) perhaps by a ghost, or as the song goes on, by the singer/speaker.

It seems like the content of the song is also aiming to make the singer/speaker as a ghost, and invisible to his loved one, probably because of his alcoholic use. "plant myself at the first bottle I see and pour a thousand drinks in the dream" is a good line describing that. the first verse shows that he probably drinks every night, and during the day when people are at the house he has to "go away until nobody's around" then "leave during the night" for more drinks.

And the same with all alcoholics, they repeat themselves, which might be more beautifully signified not in the lyrics but the repetition of chords musically. But the lyrics do signify it, " and you'll be gone for one more year/ and I'll watch you slip a little further away from me"..

TV on the Radio – Halfway Home Lyrics 15 years ago
cookiemountain
you are definately spot on. The lyrics are pointing towards a suicide with a friend/lover (is it not me? sounds like a question that they used to ask in the old days when someone who loved them treated them less than they should...) and then the soul of that person "surfs the sun and scales the moon" and the narrator has "gone insane" because of the loss.

The biggest part is the last line:

Go on throw this stone
Into this halfway home.

He is referring to a human body/the human world as a halfway home for us to exist in between spiritual worlds. TV on the Radio is very poignant and this song is beautiful. It is also like Golden Age in the sense that they are trying to give the sense of a new spiritual world that others have forgotten about. Especially other bands today, I doubt any of them get as close to describing spiritual journeys as well as this band.

Iron & Wine – Carousel Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with the last few users comments about Noah's Ark and the Iraq war. Sam Beam used a lot of biblical references in this new album in order to describe our modern world. It makes sense to think about these two ideas correlating because of the lines "our sons were overseas" and also "our sons sunk in a trunk full of noah's clothes". Noah did not need clothes only the animals, and so he is saying we are wasting lives in Iraq.
On another note, this is such a beautiful song the musicology and the slurred lyrics of Sam Beam makes this a poignant and defining epic song. I saw this live and acoustic, meaning there was no piano playing for this song, and yet, sam managed to reproduce the entire song perfectly.
Also one note to the other users commenting...
"these guys" is the wrong expression for this band, it is just Sam playing and occasionally other musicians will help (as seen with Iron and Wine and Calexico) and similarily, Sam is married so you can definately be assured that all references of love go towards that woman he is married to.

Devotchka – The Oblivion Lyrics 16 years ago
Can't believe nobody's commented this.
There are a lot of reminiscent memories of Nick (the singer) and a girl who does not love him anymore. He portrays himself as a fool, and the title of the song shows where he is going (The oblivion) but the lyric "our love is bigger than the oblivion" shows he wants desperately to be back with her instead of in nothingness. Great instrumentals and crooning from nick in this song, it's really one of the most beautiful songs they did in una volta.

La luz de cada dia
Te siento conmigo!

Something like "at the light of every day / I feel you with me?

Anyways, this song fits with the rest of the new album's theme of Nick getting over some lost love but always being grateful for it. He gets very poetic about it and at the end of the song, he seems to poke fun at all the songs that do have that semblance of 'lost love' in it...

The Doors – The Spy Lyrics 16 years ago
The repetition of the beginning of most of the lyrics shows a lot of poetic talent, and they manage to emphasize the biggest point of this song "I know your deepest, secret fear"... I do agree with fantome this is about his girlfriend.

As for alberts79, you're a moron, I think you need to listen to some of the live songs and listen to jim screaming. That voice is something that the doors could never do without and it's exactly why the band ended after jim died in france.

The lyrics do seem to be referring to a controlling figure, like the government, or a woman. But, there are no direct references, and listening to the song, all I have to say is the lyrics just add another layer of vocalism to the band. I like this song.

Starlight definately hits the nail on the head regarding the bright side of life despite "losing something that you love". This seems to be a reconciliation of all the lost/mixed emotions of the last two albums, a personal therapy for nick urata perhaps, and a finding of god.

Basically, the lines "what is this life / with no love along the way" describe devotchka's content in their songs. I must say instrumentally this song is a lot more developed and interesting than a lot of the older devotchka songs. plus, nick's vocals are lot more intense on this song.

Devotchka – Undone Lyrics 16 years ago
It is a personal confession of someone who wants to live even despite his mistakes, and he tries to make himself one with god even though he is only human. and because he is human, and this is a devotchka theme in a lot of their songs, he has fallen in love but seems to have left some unfinished business with them, perhaps their love was unreconciled and in a lot of other songs, particularily "you love me", "queen of the surface streets", "how it ends" they display that unfinished love business.

Gogol Bordello – Suddenly... (I Miss Carpaty) Lyrics 16 years ago
When you listen to this a good sense of the gypsy music hits you, the fiddle and the multi-culturalism displayed in multiple languages. But Sturm and Drang is defined on wikipedia as generally extreme emotions within a movement in german literature. I suppose hutz is actually trying to say that at a banquet you would simply storm to the table and load what you want to eat. Rimsky and Korsakov shows up on wiki more as a russian musician (musical connection between sturm/drang and rimsky korsakov) and probably it is music that he listened to as a child (referring to hutz).

Basically, it is a gypsy punk song at it's best.
