Really sad actually, but that idea fits in with Marilyn, Judy, Sylvia... even Ramsey. They are all overshadowed by what people think they were, nobody knows them as people, their personalities are dancing in the dark whilst their image lives on and people idolise them without knowing who they are. | |

I agree with what everyone else has said, but I also think there's another level to this song. "She looks good but her boyfriend says she's a mess" I think the girl in the song is brilliant but nobody is seeing it, she can't let it out in front of people and when she does she gets put down or goes unnoticed through no fault of her own. Even the people closest to her don't see that she's great and they also don't see that she's being really hurt by the fact she's constantly being underrated. So she's brilliant but deeply hurt, and I think dancing in the dark is a metaphor for both of these things. She's basically living her life unattended to and lonely, and nobody - including her, is seeing either her loneliness or brilliance, it's LIKE she's dancing in the dark. Doing something extraordinary where nobody can see it, because she's afraid to try and show herself because every time she does she's knocked down. But I think her lack of confidence is her dark. Her brilliance is cloaked in her own disbelief in herself, so she LOVES to dance in the dark as it's all she and anyone else thinks she can do. Apart from Ramsey, the girls mentioned in the song (Marilyn ect.) are all women who's downfall was bought about by the way they danced in the dark. They were loved, but their real self was in the shadow of their popularity and image, or in Sylvia's case she had her demons which broke her and she knew she could be a famous poet, but unfortunately, when she died, her career was only just lifting off. Nobody ever got to see what any of these women would have really become, or who they truly were , because everything they did overshadowed them. |

I think its about taking the good with the bad i mean "wake up the dawn and ask her why, a dreamer dreams she never dies" its about the fact some people have their head stuck in the clouds, so when they have something bad happen it seems awful then theres "where were you why we were getting high" i think thats about people who can't enjoy themselves, so nothing seems fun and those two are pretty much the opposite of eachother just like "slowly" walking down a hall, "faster" than a connon ball an oxymoron. and theres champagne = one of the finest things on earth and supernova the death of a star AKA something brilliant so i think its about the fact that in the end, "in the sky" (when you're dead) the bad and good come together "champagne supernova" and they meet. and when two extreme opposites merge, it creates nothing so i think its about taking everything as it is, because if you don't, in the end, you'll have nothing & you'll just have only tasted half of life But you and I, we'll never die The world's still spinning round We don't know why Why, why, why, why the world's spinning everything is normal but normal is normal and we don't know why that is, we just have to take it as it is while we can i know it sounds confusing, i couldn't find the words, but the song finds them for me |

i can't beleive there aren't more comments on this song! its my all time favourite song, its just so beautiful and the music and lyrics go together so well. for anyone who hasn't watched evita, its about eva peron, wife of president Juan peron & the first lady of argentina.She was born into the working classes, and made her way up, through the jobs of radio host, actress and eventually became more political and got involved with juan peron, married him and did a lot for the country. a considerable amount of argentine people mostly working class took her into their hearts as a saint and an idol, but other people hated her, (and juan)for being too working class and people beleived she often had alterior motives for doing the work she did. it was all very political and i can't fully understand it, so sorry if what i'm saying is wrong. eva peron died at 33 of cancer, the film & musical is sort of loosley based on her life, but i think it features a lot of things that were only rumoured by the anti-peronists but basically this song is her making a speech to the people of argentina, when she's at her peak in her life and career, her husband has just become president and she's telling the people she loves them and that she's still one of them deep down, though life has changed her, so they shouldn't cry for her. Evita is my favourite film ever. like i said, sorry if i said anything wrong on here but its what i know from the film and what i've heard, so please forgive me :) i'm not argentinian and i don't take history so i don't know much about what was actually going on at this time in argentina |

awww this song is so beautiful. its strange in the poem even though you know the highwayman is a villain and king georges men are just trying to get rid of a public problem, you sympathise more with the highwayman and king georges men are made to be the villains, and it mainly comes down to the treatment of bess. the highwayman gets the heroic status because of the deep love between he and bess but king georges men treat bess appalingly, and basically stop the love between them, so even though they're politically in the right, it shows from a point where you sympathise through people from their emotions, not their actions. |
