Underworld – King Of Snake Lyrics

It's interesting to know there's an actual story behind this.
(Also, Underworld had some very literal lyrics on Underneath the Radar.) |

I guess that's not possible since those songs came out in the same year. I think of this album as being older than it is... |

I also figured it was about abuse.
This is far and away the best song on the album in my opinion. |

Madonna – Bad Girl Lyrics

Though my first impression was that it's about infidelity, I'm not sure it's really about cheating. I think it's about being unable to express a desire to have a real relationship with someone out of the fear of hurting that person, and trying to drown those emotions in random hook-ups with other men. The character may be stringing someone along in a very casual relationship but never confessing that she's in love because she thinks her life is too much of a mess.
The music video is haunting and awesome (my second favorite Madonna video after "Oh Father"). |

Cat Power – Troubled Waters (Mae West cover) Lyrics

This one is on the covers record, but I think it's just a traditional song. I can't find any info on where the song originated.
I feel like it's about being a victim of extreme prejudice. |

New Order – Temptation Lyrics

I always love that bit. Originally it was going to be Bowie's "Golden Years" but they liked "Temptation" better for the withdrawal hallucination. |

Metric – Gold Guns Girls Lyrics

I don't think it's literally about a relationship, but I think there's an allegory between object lust and interpersonal lust that's interesting and clever. A lot of us can relate to the personal level of being objectified in relationships because of sex; this song seems to be about that problem on a much wider level, the inability for us to live peacefully with each other because we always want money. |

Tilly and the Wall – Coughing Colors Lyrics
| 14 years ago
|
To me this song could be about a girl who had a lot of psychological problems, and how her behavior was really chaotic but sort of part of the reason she was so loved. I think the "coughing up your colors" reflects this attitude that treatment/acting like society expects you to can sometimes take away somebody's individuality and how he kind of wants her to succumb to the insanity and be herself...It's bittersweet. It's about how people can't be defined by one description or action, how they can be selfish and kind at the same time, how you can resent and love the same person for the same reasons. |

Everyone is going to die some day. I think this song is about how that can either be a paralyzing or freeing realization. |

Yeah, I've never heard the "already in hell" lines in any other version. It reminds me of the "go to red places and try to stay out of hell" line from "Colors and the Kids." |

Placebo – Swallow Lyrics

I love the amnesiac mood of this song.
The instrumental after the fade-out is titled "HK Farewell" which apparently stands for "Hong Kong." Not sure why. Maybe they played it at the end of shows in Hong Kong? |

I misheard the lines as "with the bullshit, all that I have made, for your man, it's a heck of a wage." Always thought this song was about an affair. |

Belle & Sebastian – The Boy with the Arab Strap Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
A lot of the time when they sing it live it's "boy from the arab strap" but on the album it's definitely WITH the arab strap, which I've taken as meaning the sex toy. I've always interpreted this as someone having a hard time adjusting after getting out of jail, and that there is kind of a quick flashback to the reason he ended up in jail with "I missed the bus/you were laid on your back with the boy with the arab strap." He came home and caught his partner with someone else, crime of passion, etc.

I don't think it's a stretch, in fact I'm pretty sure the exact line, "Walk without rhythm and it won't attract the worm" is in the Lynch film |

LCD Soundsystem – Someone Great Lyrics
|
It's about a death, and possibly about how it affects a relationship between two people that knew the person. The line about seeing it coming is the moment when somebody gets a phonecall at night and can already tell that something's wrong, so the specific death of the person is not necessarily anticipated. "You're smaller than my wife expected" = seeing the body at a funeral. |

I always thought that one line was, "I can't give myself a rest on the way to getting blessed, FORGIVEN AND UNDONE." |
