Annie Lennox – Why Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I remember I was about to break up with a girlfriend many years ago. I had been living in germany and I was in back in New York on vacation. I remember walking several miles in the pouring rain to buy the cd, just to listen to this song over and over again... great song, really powerfully emotional... best line for me is lets go down to the water's edge and we can cast away those doubts... I reflect often that relationships usually fail or never really start due to fear or lack of confidence, if you will doubts. |
Joni Mitchell – Paprika Plains Lyrics | 16 years ago |
These lyrics are so cool... Liquid soap and grass And jungle gardenia crash On Pine-Sol and beer ... It's stifling in here ... Gotta get some air ... I'm going outside to get some air This album has a few great tunes... why didn'y joni tune the piano? |
Joni Mitchell – Edith and The Kingpin Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I must agree this album is fantastic... sadly overlooked... not very popular for a joni album, but sophisticated, real jazzy and loaded with great musicians. |
Joni Mitchell – Harry's House/Centerpiece Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is one of joni's best... I heard it once 30 years ago and fell in love with it... it will have a renaissance because herbie recorded it, but tina is just not joni... Marriage is not always a happy or exciting time... lots of daily boring rituals...and the more thn occasional disdain for the partner... best line To tell him like she did today Just what he could do with Harry's House And Harry's take home pay |
Steely Dan – My Rival Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I say it is as simple as a guy has lost his love to an older ganster type ala Edward G. Robinson...And yes this is SOOOO cool, a perfect film noir... This pedophile stuff leaves me shaking my head...how is "the tiny hand in mine" a male? It was his young girlfriend... the guy vowes he will make him (the gangster type) pay and he will match him whim for whim now... He's a jolly roger (old common expression for a happy go lucky) means a happy guy thats all, but wait till I get my hands on him or get him in a dark alley They are driving in the desert (prickly pear [aka Catus])... instead of key west... film noir is always in a secluded little town or so... I still say Gaucho is thier best work...great tune! |
Steely Dan – Pixeleen Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is definately Lara Croft...but Becker and Fagen don't sound real happy about the fact that movies are being made about video characters... Soaked through on the floor of a noodle shop Penned by a hack in the Palisades Backed by some guys from Columbia Shot all in digital video For a million and change Born on the floor of a noodle shop Dropped in the bogs of Jersey Shot by a guy from Columbia Soaked through all in digital video Girl with the sweet backstory Pitched in a trailer in Burbank Cast by a cool-enough yes-man Screened at a festival in Utah Wow that is a finger to hollywood and one too to NJ...and bad movie production... but I do have a cool new nickname for my wingman... Abu |
Steely Dan – Almost Gothic Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This and Negative Girl are the two best cuts off the cd...I get Negative Girl real easy, but this song's meaning eludes me totally. I don't think the girl is black... not with "almost Gothic". What is very puzzling for me is how any girl can be "almost gothic in a natural way". That is really funny. The lyric is sloe-eyed creature references a bluish-black or plum color coming from a plum like fruit ( they vary). Most "Gothic Chics" have that black eyeliner all around the eyes which it what makes them "Gothic" and she is "severe"... which is a cool adjective meaning perhaps intense? Great song, but I need to run into walter or donald to find out what this one means...but I am sizzling like an Isotope at that prospect... |
Steely Dan – BarryTown Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I agree this is not likely a direct reference to interacial predudices... these are Hari-christners or maybe Moonies... the rest is clear... this is likely written before 1974... |
Donald Fagen – Ruby Baby Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Real nice job on a fun song. We all have a Ruby somewhere... I'd give the world just to set her heart aflame...hey hey anybody got a match... I think the "oh miiine" should be "all" miiine. I don't plan on sharing my Ruby Baby |
Donald Fagen – The Goodbye Look Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is a fantanstic tune about Castro... The protaganist is in Cuba having the time of his life...till the government changes overnight with a revolution. He needs to get off the Island... that Colonel is suppose to be Castro with the stupid face, the glasses and the gun...This might even be a Hemmingway type character speaking...I know what happens... I heard the song, lots... I love it. |
Donald Fagen – New Frontier Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is a great tune... my favorite off the album... learned to play it cause I love it so much. The song, due to the video is self explanitory, but rikdad this is way 1950's. Kennedy is not even a Congressmen when this song is suppose to take place. The New Frontier references the time after the nuclear bomb all but destroys the world or into future space travel, both of which were fears and ideas in Ike's time. |
Donald Fagen – Maxine Lyrics | 16 years ago |
High School sweethearts... parked somewhere and making plans for the future...wish life was as real as this song... |
Donald Fagen – Green Flower Street Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I would say white guy gets asian girlfriend... gang activity... and in the end mandarin plum's brother threatens our protaganist... this song makes my joy complete love Greenflower Street. Great tune! |
Donald Fagen – I.G.Y. (International Geophysical Year) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I recently told a friend of mine that if I had an accidental death anytime soon (I am in my 40's)... I wanted them to slip a copy of this CD in my coffin... I really need to know I can hear this CD in my afterlife and for all universal time. I know it sounds a bit maudlin, but this album means everythiing to me. This is my single favorite album of all time. God Bless Donald Fagen... IGY is great... hope, future, environment and even national pride I can be real comfortable with... |
Steely Dan – Babylon Sisters Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Ok here is my take... middle age married guy hooks himself a new younger girl... she is his "in" into a different lifestyle. Jungle music is likely just the music from her generation. My grandparents thought jazz was jungle music, my parents rock n roll etc. She maybe a singer or actress who has made it...He has always wanted to be at some party in/at the "Distant lights from across the bay". Now he is thanks to her. Therefor a Babylon Sister is a direct reference to our single character in the plural, young girls who are like the fall of Babylon. She is the person that will be his demise. He knows love is not a game for three. Her, him and the wife! Santa Ana winds do make people do strange things... We'll jog with show folk on the sand Drink kirschwasser from a shell San Francisco Show and Tell Again he is now with the "in" younger crowd... Well I should know by now that it's just a spasm A spasm is something you do one a whim Like a Sunday in T.J. Like on a bender in Tiajana That it's cheap but it's not free Its cheap but you still have to pay That I'm not what I used to be I am having a mid-life crisis and need this girl to make me feel young and get me in with a younger crowd And that love's not a game for three I am still married... the wife is somewhere My friends say no don't go for that cotton candy Son you're playing with fire The kid will live and learn As he watches his bridges burn From the point of no return Cotton Candy is just a young and sweet thing... I am out of my mind and there will be no way back to my boring, but at least safe existence with my wife... I know what a babylon sister is... a need in my mind to remain young in my mind! Favorite Steely Dan song all time... I sing it everyday of my life, at work, on the train...hey you gotta skake it baby, you gotta shake it |
Steely Dan – Gaucho Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Cojo... I have to tell you I agree with your take on the song 100%. I get the same feeling a manager taking to his "star". This was written while they were in California so I want to say they are taking about a hollywood star, but wrestler or rodeo is possible...it's just that isn't a big money making business with "high rollers" This is one of SD's best songs musically. Gaucho is for me the best album they recorded... althought they are all great. |
Steely Dan – Negative Girl Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Guys her issue is she is a heroine addict... she's lost, she's late she's zooming on a couch... she gets the nods, which people do when on smack. her skin is like milk... she's anemic, skinny, sickly like she has never seen the sun...She's on a train updown to visit a "doctor friend" he is her supplier, might be a real doctor, more likely not...and maybe she will get to me when she "comes back down" not from the Bronx but from her high... Now here is my twist... he may not know she is a drug addict cause when she is functionable she is fun and does fun things like dancing in the rain... he knows she has issues but he may not know its smack... This guy is hooked cause how many girls do you date that you are not allowed to call at home? Coolest lyric in the song is... Deliciously toxic...I know/knew a few girls in my life like that! Lastly he stares into his coke is likely not drug related... he might be so "straight" he misses her drug problem completely. |
