Ash – Gone The Dream Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a great song. Depressing, but great.

I think the first part is reminiscing about childhood in its innocence and security. Maybe padding around the kitchen in footed pjs getting a milk before he went to sleep.

Then he sings about a cold wind rocking his childhood sleep. Rocking in reference to a cradle - down came baby, cradle and all, symbolic of the real world ('out where the cold wind blows') stealing the life he knew in the glow of the kitchen in the first part.

I think the contrast is the childhood bedtime versus the man lying awake, the cozy drifting off to sleep of the one, the insomniac ('hours pass') alone in a sleeping city with his cold ('nothing more than this') adult life. I think 'gone the dream' refers to the death of the safe childhood world, replaced by the 'nothing more than this' reality.

I also wonder if the face shining upon him of the first part is a loved one that later died?

The Who – Bargain Lyrics 16 years ago
Who's the philosopher who talked about the God-shaped hole in man? I think it's about the hunger for the true higher being and the lengths he will go to find it and therefore find himself.

One and one make one
And I'm looking for that free ride to me
I'm looking for you

I think maybe drown an unsung man isn't him drowning anyone, but that he will drown in some figuative sense, and drown as an unsung man. Something about humility as a path to find what he's looking for.

The Who – Who Are You? Lyrics 16 years ago
took the tube back out of town
Back to the Rollin' Pin
I felt a little like a dying clown
With a streak of Rin Tin Tin

Back to the rollin' pin has got to be back to the wife, you know the old illustration of the angry wife chasing the husband with one.

Trying to get the dying clown/Rin Tin Tin bit. Anyone want to take a stab? Dying clown having something to do with sobering up, coming out of drunk entertainer mode and back to a home type of person? Rin Tin Tin is way before my time, no clue other than he's a dog.
